Every defendant has the rights to what we call allocution. They have the right to speak on their own behalf. As a prosecutor, I have seen a lot of defendants gift statements, and I have seen it range. I've seen defendants be apologetic and truly apologetic. I've seen some of them apologize to their own families. But in my opinion, his allocution was one of the weirdest allocutions I've heard in my whole career.
