Crime Stories with Nancy Grace - STEPHEN SMITH BODY EXHUMED, High Security Escorts Body to Tampa
play

04/03/23 • 36 min

The body of Stephen Smith has been exhumed, autopsied and reinterred. A SLED security team accompanied the body to a location in Florida where the examination took place. Information on the new autopsy has not be released yet.

Meanwhile, news of two possible persons of interest has come to light. Investigation into those leads are continuing.

Stephen Smith's body was discovered on a rural road in Hampton county back in 2015. Just 2-weeks ago the South Carolina law enforcement division announced they are now investigating Smith's death as a homicide. Smith's death was initially investigated as a hit-and-run but investigators say the evidence did not support that as a cause of death.

Crime Stories with Nancy Grace - Poison Specialist's Wife Sudden Death, BY POISON
play

11/21/23 • 43 min

Betty and Connor Bowman have a lot in common when they marry.

Betty Bowman graduates from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy with a Pharmaceutical Doctorate. She works as a hospital pharmacist while Connor Bowman gets his Internal Medicine Residency. Betty Bowman takes a position at the Mayo Clinic, so when she falls ill suddenly, the Mayo Clinic is the logical place for treatment.

It seems Betty Bowman is suffering from food poisoning, gastrointestinal distress, and dehydration. Her condition doesn't get any better. She takes a turn for the worse, with heart problems, and fluid buildup in her lungs. Part of her colon is also removed after doctors discover necrotic tissue. Bowman dies from organ failure.

Then the Southeast Minnesota Medical Examiner's Office alerts the Rochester Police Department to the suspicious nature of Betty Bowman's death. The Medical Examiner's office had to halt a cremation order.

According to court records, the Medical Examiner’s Office received a call from CGK- a female friend of the Bowman who said Betty and Connor Bowman were having marital issues and were talking about divorce following infidelity and a deteriorating relationship.

In the Criminal Complaint, it is stated that Conner Bowman told the Medical Examiner’s Office that his wife should be cremated immediately, arguing that Betty Bowman did not want to be a cadaver. Connor Bowman also began asking one of the medical examiner investigators if the toxicology analysis being completed would be more thorough than the analysis typically done at the hospital. Bowman wanted a list of what was specifically going to be tested for.

Friends of Betty Bowman began reaching out to investigators. An adult female friend of Betty Bowman told the Rochester Police Department that she had texted Betty Bowman and that Bowman told her she was sick. The friend told the detective that Betty Bowman was normally a healthy person. Another friend said a text from Betty Bowman said she thought a smoothie she had the night before might have caused her illness.

Detectives began looking at all options and found husband Connor Bowman had accessed Betty Bowman's patient account using his hospital credentials. From there he was able to locate internet searches conducted by Connor Bowman, a Poison Specialist.

Connor Bowman was researching COLCHICINE, a drug used to treat gout. What's more, he was searching for information in determining what a lethal dose would be, by entering his wife's weight.

Crime Stories with Nancy Grace - BUSTED: Man Makes 'ACCIDENTAL CONFESSION' TO MURDER
play

03/12/24 • 42 min

April 23, 1993: the owner of Ajax Liquor store, Steve Weltig, is found dead on the floor on the floor of his shop. Investigators say it appears a struggle took place just before Weltig is shot in the head.

Detectives work the case and develop a suspect sketch, but no real evidence leading to a killer is found and the case goes cold. The case is assigned to different investigators over the years. New leads are investigated, and evidence is collected. In 2015, reliable tips led detectives to Loril Harp. Harp's former wife contacted police and told them Loril Harp shot Weltig.

She tells detectives she did not drive her former husband to the liquor store on the day of the murder. She was at home and when Harp came home that morning he immediately took a shower. She tells police her ex-husband tells her he just shot a man in an Arnold liquor store.

A friend and former co-worker of Weltig's also tells Arnold police that Harp told him that he shot Weltig. Harp is brought in for an interview but investigators fail to gather enough evidence to seek charges for the murder.

Twenty-seven years after the murder of Steve Weltig, another set of detectives take over the case. Looking back over the case file, they watch the 2015 interview with Loril Harp. In that interview, detectives leave the room for a few minutes.

During the break, Loril Harp makes a call on his cell phone and what he says lights a fire under the investigation. Loril Harp tells the person on the phone that he is not under arrest, but "I probably will be before I leave here."

The detectives recognize this as a near admission that Loril Harp is expecting something after all these years. Harp is brought back in for a new interview.

Investigators Cpl. Brett Acklermann and Detective Corporal Josh Wineinger spend hours talking to Loril Harp. At 68 years old, Harp is in bad health and needs 24-hour nursing care. During his interview with the detectives, Loril Harp says he did not shoot Steve Weltig multiple times.

Harp admits that he and Weltig got into a fight, and Harp says he hit Weltig a few times and left. Harp claims he went home and took a shower, right away. And the detectives begin talking about cleaning up the blood when Harp is asked if he had a little blood on him, Harp replies "I must have if I shot him."

This phrase is all detectives need.

Actor Jussie Smollett spends more than six hours on the stand during his first day testifying in his Chicago trial on charges that he faked a hate crime attack on himself. Today, again, 39-year-old Smollett faces prosecutors who say the "Empire" actor was the mastermind of a orchestrated attack. 12/01/22 • 44 min

Idaho police taking a step back from their comments that the four University of Idaho students killed in their bedrooms, were targeted.

Originally, comments were made by investigators that the public "will just have to trust us," that the evidence collected indicated that the students were the intended victims of the murders and that the public at large is safe.

Now, in a released statement, the Moscow Police Department says these comments came from a miscommunication with the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, and that "detectives do not currently know if the residence or any occupants were specifically targeted but continue to investigate."

Last night the University of Idaho held a vigil in honor of the student. Several hundred people attended.

Crime Stories with Nancy Grace - GILGO BEACH SERIAL KILLER SUSPECT’S BACK DECK TORN APART TILE BY TILE

07/24/23 • 40 min

As police continue their investigation of Rex Heuermann's home, reportedly a soundproof room has been found in the 59-year-old suspect’s Massapequa Park basement.

A neighbor told the New York Post that cops told him. There is speculation that one of the victims could have been killed in the soundproof room. However police now say there is no soundproof room.

Little information has been revealed about the inside of the home, but we know a few of the items that have been removed: a doll in a glass case, and what's being described as torture porn.

Investigators are excavating the suspect yard as well as using ground-penetrating radar and cadaver dogs.

Prosecutors brought rebuttal witnesses to the stand today. Murdaugh’s former law partner Ronnie Crosby was called back as well as pathologist Dr. Ellen Reimer. Retired Hampton County Sheriff TC Smalls took to the stand to testify that he never once spoke to Alex Murdaugh about installing blue lights in his vehicle.

We also learned today that the jury will visit Mozelle on Wednesday.

One interesting note was the possibility of juror misconduct. So far no information has been releases.
