087 Liz Scully on "Lingo" by Jeffrey Shaw
Best Book Ever Podcast
02/21/22 • 46 min
I’ve always thought I was a voracious reader, until I met Liz Scully. Trust me – you really need to hear how much she reads, and how she does it. We also discussed the joys of an audiobook, and how they help us get through books we wouldn’t have attempted on paper.
After that, Liz introduced me to a business strategy book. Even if you aren’t a business person, don’t miss this conversation. “Lingo” is not really about business, but about psychology – why do we buy certain things? Why do we feel comfortable in certain places? Who do we think we are when we buy things? I learned a lot about business in this book, but even more than that, I felt like I learned a lot about myself.
Also, Liz is So. Damn. Funny.

084 Chris Angel Murphy on "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky
Best Book Ever Podcast
01/31/22 • 44 min
Chris Angel Murphy (they/them) is a queer, trans, and nonbinary LGBTQ+ educator and consultant living in Denver, CO, but is originally from Los Angeles, CA. They have a background in social work and LGBTQ+ community organizing. Chris Angel started LGBTQ+ community organizing as a freshman in high school back in 2001 and has been speaking and presenting on various topics ever since. They also have their own podcast, Allyship is a Verb, in which they interview LGBTQ+ community members from various lived experiences and backgrounds. In addition to all that, Chris Angel is just a great conversationalist, fearless when it comes to tackling difficult subjects with love and compassion. I loved this conversation with them, and fell wildly in love with their Best Book Ever, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. WHAT a book!

043 Jami Albright on "The Hating Game" by Sally Thorne
Best Book Ever Podcast
04/05/21 • 30 min
Jami Albright is a born and raised Texas girl and is the multiple award-winning author of the “Brides on the Run” series and the “Small Town Royalty” series, which are fun, sexy, snarky, laugh-out-loud rom-coms. She is also a wife, mother, an actress, comedian, and a devout fan of something called the Houston Texans. I’m not sure what that is, but I always love hanging out with Jami anyway. She makes me laugh and she absolutely blew up my TBR list with her “Best Of” Trope recommendations.

031 Alyssa Archer on "Deerskin" by Robin McKinley
Best Book Ever Podcast
01/11/21 • 38 min
Talking to Alyssa Archer is always a balm for my soul. In this conversation, we veered from homesteading, the Enneagram, her childhood love of fairy tales, and books that can be a form of healing from trauma. Play close attention to Alyssa’s accent, and how she gets more Texan every time she talks about her homestead!
Trigger warnings: this book does have a rape scene, and Alyssa and I discuss the scene and its aftermath in our conversation. If you or someone you know is a sexual assault survivor, please contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline for help at 800-656-4673.

033 Shari Okeke on "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas
Best Book Ever Podcast
01/25/21 • 30 min
This week, I talked to Shari Okeke about "The Hate U Give," fantastic book by Angie Thomas. Shari spoke honestly about being a mixed-race woman, raising-mixed race kids, and navigating a world that tries to silence Black women’s voices. Through her work with the CBC, she gives a voice and a platform to young people on her podcasts. I so enjoyed getting to know her and the frank and thoughtful conversation we shared.

051 Jhoanna Belfer on "The Body Papers" by Grace Talusan
Best Book Ever Podcast
05/31/21 • 39 min
I was introduced to Bel Canto Books from previous guest of the Best Book Ever, Asha Sabbella, who travels there frequently with her book club. Jhoanna has impeccable taste in book curation, and is a fierce advocate for BIPOC and women authors. Major warning: this episode will make you want to open a bookstore. I have spent many hours – many, many hours – researching bookstore ownership since my talk with Jhoanna.

023 Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello on "The Magical Language of Others" by E.J. Koh

Show notes for Episode 023 – Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello on “The Magical Language of Others” by E.J. Koh
Marci Calabretta Cancio-Bello is equal parts quick wit and deep thinker. Talking to her was like talking to someone who can see deeper into the ocean than you can, and will gently explain it to you. Marci talks freely about how books saved her life, and this conversation was a balm for my soul after a rough week. I know you are going to love it.
We talked for almost two hours, and I had to cut a lot of it to fit the podcast time restraints. But one thing I don’t want you to miss is that Marci is the program director for the Miami Book Fair. Because of the pandemic, this year the Book Fair is online, which means we all have access to it. The fair is happening November 15-22; make sure you check out the awesome lineup of programs and discussions.

022 Azhelle Wade on "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston
Best Book Ever Podcast
10/26/20 • 42 min
There are some people who are so interesting, who have such fascinating lives and jobs, that I can't wait to invite them to the podcast. Then they turn around and scare the life out of me with their book choices. That's what happened with today's guest, Azhelle Wade. Azhelle designs toys for a living, and mentors others in the toy design process. She is sweet and funny and an utterly delightful guest. But the book she chose, "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston, is about a near-catastrophic outbreak of the Ebola virus. I don't read a lot of scary books, but I can honestly say this might be the scariest book ever written. Azhelle and I had a great laugh about my raging anxiety, and then the interview turned surprisingly candid and honest. I know you're going to love her.
