Best Book Ever Podcast

Chris Angel Murphy (they/them) is a queer, trans, and nonbinary LGBTQ+ educator and consultant living in Denver, CO, but is originally from Los Angeles, CA. They have a background in social work and LGBTQ+ community organizing. Chris Angel started LGBTQ+ community organizing as a freshman in high school back in 2001 and has been speaking and presenting on various topics ever since. They also have their own podcast, Allyship is a Verb, in which they interview LGBTQ+ community members from various lived experiences and backgrounds. In addition to all that, Chris Angel is just a great conversationalist, fearless when it comes to tackling difficult subjects with love and compassion. I loved this conversation with them, and fell wildly in love with their Best Book Ever, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. WHAT a book!

083 Marion Hill on "Parable of the Sower" by Octavia Butler

It’s always a delight to talk to one of the readers I admire most: returning guest of the show Marion Hill. Today, Marion joined me to talk about the sci-fi classic “Parable of the Sower,” and we had a great discussion about repeated readings, what makes a book sci-fi, and how Octavia Butler transcends any genre.

085 Jaclyn Desforges on "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte

Jaclyn Desforges is the author of Danger Flower, a poetry collection about nature, sexuality, reverse mermaids and mothering. She’s also the author of Why Are You So Quiet? a picture book about being an introverted kid. Her award-winning poems and stories have been published in literary magazines across Canada. Today, Jaclyn joined me to talk about a book that I have always thought I hated. It turns out, I fundamentally misunderstood “Jane Eyre,” and this was one of those bookish conversations that opened my eyes and made my brain tingle. We also talked Reverse Mermaids, how to understand books differently on a re-reading, and how Jane Eyre is Jaclyn’s own personal Patron Saint of Neurodivergence.
