Episode #2. In this episode, Arjuna George talks with a Retired Firefighter Jeff Dill who is the Behavioral Health administrator for the Las Vegas Fire Rescue and the founder of the Behavioral Health Alliance. They discuss the topic of moral injury in firefighters, suicide in the fire service culture, and the work of the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (FBHA) in tracking and validating fire and suicide cases. They also discuss the importance of language and the power of words when discussing mental health issues. Jeff shares some tips for preventing moral injury and improving awareness of mental health issues, including building strong relationships with support systems at home and promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Jeff travels the United States & Canada, holding workshops to educate firefighters, dispatchers & EMS about behavioral health awareness, moral injury and suicide prevention. In 2010, FBHA began tracking and validating data on all FF, EMS and dispatcher suicides across the United States. In addition, FBHA offers seven workshops for first responders, counselors/chaplains, family members and preparing for retirement. Jeff Dill holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling, is a retired Fire Captain at Palatine Rural Fire Protection District in Inverness, Illinois. Jeff speaks internationally about his work for his brothers and sisters. In the past ten years, he has travelled over 900,000 air miles. His message offers hope and inspires all to enjoy life by understanding their own behavioral health.
