Clearing Space, Creating Clarity | BE Moment
08/21/19 • 7 min
Anyone else feel a bit overwhelmed by clutter? In your calendar, in your house, in your life? Where you don't feel like you can catch a breath? Or like you need to first clean and make room before you start anything new? Or worse, you feel like you don’t start anything because you've got so much going on, you can't figure out where to start?
And even organized clutter is still clutter!
I'd been feeling a bit stuck on a few projects (my book and some of my business pursuits) because there was SO MUCH going on.....and my office was a reflection of that! And despite multiple attempts to get things organized and to get rid of things I didn't need, I kept making excuses of why I needed to keep something (and then basically reorganized new piles).
Even though my office might look somewhat neat to a stranger, it was mirroring my life, books overflowing the bookshelves (yes, color coordinated), thank you cards to be mailed under my desk and the closet, oh, the closet....years of Christmas Cards I would someday create an album out of!
The team from Put Together Place came in a few weeks ago and literally, did magic! I can't explain how much lighter I feel, how much I love the new space and how inspired I am to work in it!
Three things I learned and now believe about creating space!
- Empty space isn't just physical, it's mental.
As they hauled out boxes of books, redundant electronics and even fancy dresses I no longer need, I could just FEEL the space in my mind as well. I sat down and edited my book.....finishing in two hours what I thought would take 12!
- Hire a professional. We are too attached to our clutter, whether it's commitments, books, photos, or even relationships.
I had attempted to do it before on my own, but I was too close to the clutter, too attached. Sometimes, someone further away can see the picture more clearly. And they LOVE doing this (I do not)! And when you see someone else holding your stuff with no emotional attachment, it is SO much easier to LET IT GO.
- Don't underestimate how quickly space can be opened and what it will allow room for!
The team finished more in one day than I could have done on my own in a week (because I would have been constantly distracted)! And more importantly, when it was done, I felt a total energetic flow! I finished my book, took care of a few other items that had been on my to do list and I wanted to KEEP going! I feel SUCH room for the goals I have this year, instead of wondering how I'm going to accomplish them with everything I have going on!
I just got back from 10 days of travel, inspired and ready to dive into some projects. Coming home to an organized, minimalist-ish office means no overwhelm. That space creates clarity. ANd clarity creates action.
Once you create the space, resist the urge to fill it back up! One thing we rarely schedule time for is the time to breathe, to think, to BE.
