MLMbarrassment of Riches (LuLaRoe Deep Dive)
09/26/21 • 150 min
This is part 1 of a 2-part deep dive about the Amazon Prime documentary LuLaRich, a series chronicling the rise and fall of the infamously moldy, egregiously unattractive, paper thin short-lived leggings empire, LuLaRoe. After learning this company is holy in more ways than one, Kate dives into a couple different angles she wanted to elaborate on following watching the documentary, the first being the relationship to her prior series about the "venn diagram" of exploitative sales pitches and how this relates to other predatory practices of self-help/cults/religions/etc. Beyond that, Kate digs a bit more into DeAnne's background, patriarchal influences, estranged sister, and then moves on to try and figure out what was the actual best case earning potential of this “once in a lifetime opportunity.” After that, she uncharacteristically proceeds to do a lot of mental math and walks you through her discoveries as it relates to what she found out that could’ve really gone down with their inventory's demise after going through some of the paperwork related to their cargo shipments. A little heavy, a little light, every Kendall at the Met Gala needs their Kim shadow. Part 2 coming Thursday with Amanda Montell (author of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism), which will be a more specific discussion about how to spot culty tendencies and avoid getting ourselves involved in a situation that could turn into a slippery, nay, buttery, slope

One Hit Mumbler
This week starts with Kate sharing an update about how her birthday surprise turned out along with the weird coincidences and special moments that made her hopeful she’s headed for Better Days. Relevant to the surprise, the first hour or so is a nostalgic snorkel covering carnivals, concerts, and 90s mumbly pop rock (feat. an intense argument for why the Goo Goo Dolls are the greatest), followed by an interview in the second hour with 3 very esteemed guests, Kate’s husband’s sisters Rachel, Claire, and Ally. Kate and her sisters-in-law cover a variety of pop culture topics, mostly about late 90s/early 2000s emo, punk, and pop alt rock artists and their ability to be considered "cool" or not, featuring a conversation surrounding perennial pop cultural punching bag: Nickelback. A funny and lighthearted episode all around featuring a random pocket of popular culture. Note: The second half of this episode was originally posted to Patreon as a bonus, but the first half is brand new! Enjoy.
