Be There in Five

Be There in Five

Kate Kennedy

Be There in Five is a pop culture and millennial zeitgeist-focused podcast by Kate Kennedy (entrepreneur, author, pop culture commentator). Long-form and solo hosted, Be There in Five explores different facets of popular culture in a comedic, thoughtful, and analytical way, covering entertainment, social media, bloggers/influencers, and celebrities, in addition to focusing on the humor found in reexamining the 90s/00s as an adult (from AIM to Zenon). As one listener described it, “come for the relatable humor and lighthearted topics, stay for the surprising levels of depth and thoughtfulness injected into them.”

Be There in Five - 109. I Saw The Signs (Part II)
play

04/23/20 • 119 min

If you're in the mood for a deep talk about the inexplicable things that happen to us, this is the episode for you. Kate crowdsources and reads aloud listener stories of signs, spooky occurrences, coincidences, synchronicities, and examples of passed loved ones possibly communicating. With lots of philosophical discussions in between about life, death, religion, and spirituality, this is perhaps the deepest of dives yet. Sounds like a downer, but it's ultimately an uplifting reminder of how we never really part from what matters most and to always pay close attention. You never know who's reaching out :)

This week, Kate is joined by Stephanie McNeal (a deputy breaking news director from BuzzFeed who specializes in reporting on influencers & internet culture) to talk about all things influencers in the time of COVID-19. They discuss the importance of holding people accountable, complexities of influencing the public in a tense social climate, how influencers are shifting their tone, how they respond to missteps, the appropriateness of sponsored content, loop giveaways, the real breakout star (tie-dye sweatsuits) and more. Beyond that, they discuss influencers at the center of current or previous controversies like Arielle Charnas, Caroline Calloway, and Rachel Hollis, to name a few. Come back for part 2 when Kate reviews the results of a survey she did where over a thousand of you shared your perspective, expectations, and recommendations for influencers during a time when their voice (or lack thereof) has the ability to stand out more than ever. And best of all, she'll review who you think has approached this situation extremely well and what content you're loving in order to end this on a positive note by celebrating the many many influencers who have done a great job. This week, Kate starts with some classic BTIF tangents, namely the 8 Passengers/Ruby Franke/Jodi Hildebrandt arrests and their “mental health” organization/cult, then interviews two podcast listeners about topics of their choice. First, Shea opens up about her experience getting back an NPE (not parent expected) result from an Ancestry DNA kit and her search for the truth of her identity ever since. Then, she talks with Emily to dissect the 2000s “Twee” aesthetic in all its ModCloth manic-pixie glory. Enjoy!

Be There in Five - Duggaring Deeper

Duggaring Deeper

Be There in Five

play

06/11/23 • 116 min

This week, Kate finally digs into the Duggar world after finding the Prime Video documentary Shiny Happy People particularly riveting/alarming, and explores topics adjacent to the crimes, controversy, and cultural relevance of the family, along with the connections of the IBLP to homeschooling and extensive political pipelines designed to infiltrate positions of power with individuals groomed with fundamentalist beliefs. Kate discusses her taste in reality tv, her history with TLC programming, researches a little more about wisdom booklet teachings, briefly spirals about the "He Gets Us" Super Bowl campaign/Hobby Lobby CEO, and shares some of her own POV regarding the glorifying of religious authority and how it mimics abusive dynamics.

TWs: SA, CSAM, religious trauma, among other horrifying topics. Please only listen if you’ve watched the doc and are familiar with the subject matter.

Be There in Five - MLMbarrassment of Riches (LuLaRoe Deep Dive)
play

09/26/21 • 150 min

This is part 1 of a 2-part deep dive about the Amazon Prime documentary LuLaRich, a series chronicling the rise and fall of the infamously moldy, egregiously unattractive, paper thin short-lived leggings empire, LuLaRoe. After learning this company is holy in more ways than one, Kate dives into a couple different angles she wanted to elaborate on following watching the documentary, the first being the relationship to her prior series about the "venn diagram" of exploitative sales pitches and how this relates to other predatory practices of self-help/cults/religions/etc. Beyond that, Kate digs a bit more into DeAnne's background, patriarchal influences, estranged sister, and then moves on to try and figure out what was the actual best case earning potential of this “once in a lifetime opportunity.” After that, she uncharacteristically proceeds to do a lot of mental math and walks you through her discoveries as it relates to what she found out that could’ve really gone down with their inventory's demise after going through some of the paperwork related to their cargo shipments. A little heavy, a little light, every Kendall at the Met Gala needs their Kim shadow. Part 2 coming Thursday with Amanda Montell (author of Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism), which will be a more specific discussion about how to spot culty tendencies and avoid getting ourselves involved in a situation that could turn into a slippery, nay, buttery, slope
