ARCHITECTING Podcast - Career + Lifestyle Mentoring for Architects looking to move beyond overwhelm and make a difference through design

Shifting priorities, but not deadlines, pressure to provide more service for less fee. We've all been there trying to win work and maintain client relationships. But at what cost?

  1. Don't get caught up in a race to the bottom on fees. Understand that there is a buyer for every market- some want cheap sunglasses while others want high quality designer items. Position yourself for the market you want to be and you will find a client match.
  2. Understand the dynamic relationship between time, cost and work. Work with your client on strategies to prioritize one and understand how it impacts the others
  3. Give your clients more of a behind the scenes glimpse into your process so they don't just see the polished items in meetings. This helps them appreciate the complexity of issues that must be considered and expertise involved in asking the right questions and knowing how to evaluate the data.
  4. We make ideas come to life. Build in time for a client to see an idea play out and perhaps discover that it isn't in fact the right move. Build the deign process as a journey of discovery and structure your fees and schedule accordingly.

If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder. I wrote it just for busy, ambitious people like us who know they were put here to make a difference but have been caught up in the busyness for too long. Mythbusting: Egos and Sellouts

There is a lot of posturing in creative professions. We've learned to disdain what we consider to be the ego and the sellout- but what if we're getting it all wrong?

  1. Far from being the big voice, the ego is actually what traps us in people pleasing, chasing career milestones and endlessly seeking validation. How can you detach from this and become more attuned to your mission than in meeting expectations?
  2. You have one job- to live your mission of building a better world by using your unique gifts and talents. Focus on that- no matter what.
  3. Impostor syndrome is actually your ego trying to keep you safe by playing small. Move past that by embracing what you do know. Even if you can teach one thing to one person, you are succeeding.
  4. Integrity is not about making a stand for your issues. It's about bringing wholeness to a situation. That means factoring in other points of view to have a more complete picture.
  5. You can't bring integrity is you don't have integrity. Maintain positive energy and focus on the mission be making sure your own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs are met, you feel grounded and have clarity.
