Understanding the lived experience of our clients and ourselves is essential to advancing our work as architects. In this interview, I speak with the masterminds behind the book Out in Architecture, a book dedicated to bringing visibility to the voices and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community. We discuss identity beyond practice, the intersection of identity and practice and reclaiming space and identity. This is essential listening for anyone who wants to advocate for a model of practice that is inclusive and responsive.

  1. There is a difference between lived and adjacent experience. Don't assume that you understand someone's needs - ask.
  2. When you fail to ask "who's missing?" you miss the opportunity to have a more intentional practice and do more intentional work.
  3. Being a platform builder and a convener is important. When people come together, they can leverage one another's experiences.
  4. Find or make your community. As you reach out, you allow others to be seen and find or serve as role models and mentors.
  5. Be open to the serendipity of those who are put in your path.
  6. Slow down to go fast. Frustration to get something done is itself a form of bias. When you slow down you can be more present and intentional. You receive support and ideas from others by relinquishing control.

Wanna go lights out on your next creative pursuit? It won't come from slogging away, over-analyzing everything or getting lost in the busywork. If maintaining has become your way of life, you need a big time reset. Listen in to hear how to rewire your brain and body to be a creative powerhouse.

  1. Take those waking moments before your brain kicks into overdrive to feel the love for what and who yo have in life. Then keep the oxytocin flowing with an affirmation. Add a meditation and journaling session to complete your morning ritual and start your day resilient.
  2. Once you start work, take a break when you get stuck to reset and do something inspiring instead of powering through. Introduce play into your approach to work and don't forget to ask, "so what?" to keep things in perspective. Collaborate with others to introduce a fresh perspective.
  3. Prevent overwhelm and exhaustion by having good boundaries and making self care your first resort, not what you do after you've fallen apart.
  4. Celebrate the big and small wins
  5. Look for ways you can learn something new or push the boundaries with something that's gotten too familiar.

For a trending topic, burnout guards it's secrets well. In this episode, we talk about how burnout and stress are different. Learn how to tell if you just have a few symptoms or if you are in full on burnout. And finally, why taking time off isn't the fix you think it will be.

  1. Stress is burnout's gateway drug. Chronic stress, given the right conditions leads you there one shaky step at a time.
  2. Burnout isn't about how much you have to do. It's about how meaningful, appreciated and supportive your work environment is.
  3. Although exhaustion can be a symptom of burnout, you can't sleep your way out of it. You have to make changes to your lifestyle and working conditions to recover.
  4. Don't be a burnout dropout. While your first instinct might be to escape, focusing on uncertainty will just fuel the fire.

Let me guess: you're hiring. You're probably also willing to do just about anything to keep the staff you have. In this ask me anything episode, I respond to an audience question about what it takes to keep staff engaged and motivated, while also keeping a high performance bar.

  1. Provide a nurturing work environment that emphasizes flexibility, staff visibility and opportunities to grow.
  2. It's about the work you do, not just the work environment. Emphasize meaningful work that aligns with each person's personal development goals.
  3. Focus not just on diversity and inclusion, but on equitable decision making.
  4. Equity extends to fair assessment of performance. It's not fair to the other staff to gloss over poor work habits or skill gaps. Build in ways to measure growth and learn from failures.
  5. Appreciate the small wins and achievements and help your staff see the connection back to their personal goals.

Likability is rooted in trust. Trust being that vibe you're laying down that others pick up on in mere nanoseconds. Learn how postures and facial expressions you may be unaware of are affecting your likability,

  1. Show interest and attention by making eye contact, nodding, smiling and making positive gestures as someone talks. Make them your entire focus.
  2. Before you start a meeting, take time to read the room so you can decide whether people need reassurance, encouragement, or a change to shine.
  3. Make others feel seen and heard by asking for their thoughts or concerns. Avoid rushing through to stay on an agenda or get your own ideas out.
  4. Be aware of your posture. Standing in a balanced, broad shouldered way with your hands at your sides shows confidence. Slouching, crossing your arms, fidgeting or hands in pockets are defensive stances that evoke distrust.
  5. Mirror the speakers gestures to show affinity with their thoughts and thought patterns.

Anger, guilt and shame are the root cause of all communication problems. This episode explores ways to stop framing things through the lens of our own insecurities and emotional reactions. Stop being triggered and start being curious about exploring the possibilities.

  1. Your negative self image will lead you to fear negative outcomes. This looks like reading into what others say and do to reinforce your own inner narrative.
  2. Don't let your ego lead the way. Show up focused on the purpose and ideas to avoid emotional triggers if you are met with skepticism or challenges.
  3. Show up ready to explore what's possible. Remember that failure is how we learn and that every idea or solutions has pros and cons.
  4. Ask questions instead of making assumptions. Bad intentions will come to light and well intended criticism will surface for discussion so that ideas can be elevated and explored, not shot down.

Where are all the women in our profession? So many fade away due to lack of support and family responsibilities- but not the women in the Mothers in Architecture group. Meet the three founders who took a stand to keep moms in architecture and started a movement where women model for one another how to have a career on your own terms.

  1. Women's careers face unique challenges. By being part of a support group, you have a safe space to be vulnerable and reconcile being a professional with being a mother.
  2. Raise the bar on what expectations should be instead of trying to cope with the status quo. You deserve to be supported in the career you want to have.
  3. Mothers are often workplace trailblazers. The issues they fought for around flex time and working from home have now become workplace standards that benefit everyone, so never feel like because something isn't the norm today that it's not worth fighting for.
  4. We all need to stop romanticizing overwork. Learn to set boundaries and surround yourself with people who keep you grounded in why you need to maintain them (your well-being).
  5. Careers can follow many different paths. Your goals should align with what you want- not someone else's structure.

Shifting priorities, but not deadlines, pressure to provide more service for less fee. We've all been there trying to win work and maintain client relationships. But at what cost?

  1. Don't get caught up in a race to the bottom on fees. Understand that there is a buyer for every market- some want cheap sunglasses while others want high quality designer items. Position yourself for the market you want to be and you will find a client match.
  2. Understand the dynamic relationship between time, cost and work. Work with your client on strategies to prioritize one and understand how it impacts the others
  3. Give your clients more of a behind the scenes glimpse into your process so they don't just see the polished items in meetings. This helps them appreciate the complexity of issues that must be considered and expertise involved in asking the right questions and knowing how to evaluate the data.
  4. We make ideas come to life. Build in time for a client to see an idea play out and perhaps discover that it isn't in fact the right move. Build the deign process as a journey of discovery and structure your fees and schedule accordingly.

There is a lot of posturing in creative professions. We've learned to disdain what we consider to be the ego and the sellout- but what if we're getting it all wrong?

  1. Far from being the big voice, the ego is actually what traps us in people pleasing, chasing career milestones and endlessly seeking validation. How can you detach from this and become more attuned to your mission than in meeting expectations?
  2. You have one job- to live your mission of building a better world by using your unique gifts and talents. Focus on that- no matter what.
  3. Impostor syndrome is actually your ego trying to keep you safe by playing small. Move past that by embracing what you do know. Even if you can teach one thing to one person, you are succeeding.
  4. Integrity is not about making a stand for your issues. It's about bringing wholeness to a situation. That means factoring in other points of view to have a more complete picture.
  5. You can't bring integrity is you don't have integrity. Maintain positive energy and focus on the mission be making sure your own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs are met, you feel grounded and have clarity.

If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder. We celebrate 2024 International Women's Day by focusing on ways to inspire inclusion. Hear from Diana Nicklaus, founder of saam architecture, a revolutionary firm about what an inclusive practice environment involves

  1. Everyone needs to work in an environment that allows them to succeed. By removing the career speedbumps of rigid practice structures, every member of the firm can work in a way that allows them to show up as their most creative selves.
  2. Being empowered to thrive also means that you have to ask for the resources you need and to understand of a firm's culture is the right fit for you. Not everyone is a good match for every firm.
  3. Go in a direction that feels right even if it means you have to learn as you go.
  4. Inclusion is what happens when you give everyone the same set of tools. It's amazing what someone can do when given the opportunity.
  5. Feeling safe enough to clearly communicate your challenges is what ultimately let's you succeed.
  6. Build a network to expand your awareness of what's possible in your career and provide a sounding board for your questions, doubts and fears.
