Anything but Footy - #24 Great British Bosses: Victoria Aggar, British Athletes Commission

#24 Great British Bosses: Victoria Aggar, British Athletes Commission

11/16/20 • 34 min

Anything but Footy

In this episode, who and what is the British Athletes Commission? We speak to its chair two time world champion and Paralympic bronze medal rower Victoria Aggar.

She reveals the BAC has had to employ more staff to cope with the rising number of athletes reaching out and asking for support, following several high profile abuse and bullying scandals in British sport. And wishes she could've supported Rio 2016 medal winning gymnast Amy Tinkler in her relationship with British Gymnastics, but told us BAC never got to speak to any athletes at that organisation.

Since retiring from rowing, Vicki’s also held roles with the British Paralympic Association and now works with the English Institute of Sport. She's also a strong campaigner against drugs in sport, working with the independent Athletics Integrity Unit but recently quit her role at the World Anti Doping Agency. She tells us she remains unconvinced WADA is listening to athletes and doing enough to prevent cheating in sport.

This is Great British Bosses from Anything but Footy, the podcast where we profile the men and women responsible for running sport in this country, from grassroots participation to those medal moments at Olympic, Paralympic and elite level.

#3 Back On Track: Claire Cashmore

In this episode, multi Paralympic medalist Claire Cashmore calls on film makers and actors to think, and do more, to help fight the prejudice against those with a disability. It follows the latest 'Witches' movie depicting a witch with three fingers, a change from the original Roald Dahl text. Claire says it's a massive step backwards and recalls her experiences as a child of being called 'Captain Hook'.

After the postponement of the Games to 2021, Claire is back on track for Tokyo for what will be her 5th Paralympics, but has switched sports from swimming to triathlon despite winning gold in 2016. She talks about the challenges the first lockdown brought her - including the squiggly worms! - but her determination to succeed again next summer shines through.

This is Back On Track from Anything but Footy. The podcast series where we speak to Team GB and Para GB athletes preparing for Tokyo 2020 in 2021.

#25 Great British Bosses: Lisa Wainwright, Sport & Recreation Alliance

Like most of us, and the sporting world, 2020 didn't turn out the way the Sport & Recreation Alliance was planning. Representing hundreds of sports and activity organisations, including the FA, ECB & RFU, many are now fighting for their own survival following a series of lockdowns and tiered restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Millions of pounds worth of funding has been allocated to help the sports and recreation sector, but for many it's not enough while some grassroots and community sports clubs might not even know it's available to access.

It's Lisa Wainwright's job as CEO to work with and lobby government and then spread the word. And she's doing all this, months after shielding in her own home during lockdown, following months of treatment for cancer.

In an informative and inspirational episode, Lisa talks about everything - from cash to coming out and from discrimination to distributing cash. This is Great British Bosses from Anything but Footy - the series where we hear from the men and women running British sport and the key roles they have in many of our lives. Listen & subscribe and spread the sporting word!
