Unpack the Israel-Hamas conflict.
10/11/23 • 6 min
Happy Wednesday and welcome back. My heart is heavy with the sheer terror being inflicted on Israeli and Palestinian communities right now. The escalated conflict between Israel and Hamas reflects decades of colonization. A true and just end to this violence won’t be found through promoting continued state-funded oppression, but through the liberation of all those most oppressed in the region. We can – and we must – do this without stoking the Islamophobic and antisemitic sentiment prompted not by foreign events but by rising white extremism right here in the U.S. Today’s newsletter breaks down this conflict and how to support justice and peace.
TAKE ACTION
- Support the Palestinian Youth Movement, the Palestinian Feminist Collective, and Students for Justice in Palestine.
- Support Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now.
- Support B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories.
- Read and share this guide by Solutions Not Sides on how to denounce antisemitism and Islamophobia when discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Divest from the carceral mental health system.
It's World Mental Health Day, with this year's theme being "Mental health is a universal human right.” Everyone has not only the right to access quality mental health care but also social support, autonomy, community, and more. Yet, due to the lack of resources and the stigma around mental health issues, this right continues to be infringed on.
Today's newsletter focuses on how the violation of this right and our over-reliance on policing contributes to a carceral system for mental health where, instead of support, mental illness is penalized.
Take Action
- Support organizations like Fireweed Collective, Black Girls Smile, Asian Mental Health Collective, Immigrants Rising, and We R Native, providing mental health services and education.
- Use peer support and crisis hotlines that are divested from the police, including Trans Lifeline, BlackLine, DeQH, and the LGBT National Help Center.

Forget what you know about MSG.
The stigma surrounding MSG is part of the broader anti-Asian sentiment that's been carefully cultivated in the U.S. In order for us to dismantle it, we have to take it apart and analyze all the cogs and wheels that have kept it running. That's why I appreciate today's analysis from Andrew.
Take Action
- Consult the “Know MSG” campaign, which aims to demystify and debunk myths about the common seasoning. Learn about the large variety of non-Asian foods that contain MSG.
- Buy or download “Chinese Protest Recipes” to learn Chinese recipes including some using MSG. All proceeds benefit Color for Change.
