Have you explored the benefits of daily journaling? During quarantine, I began setting aside 15 minutes a day to explore my thoughts and ideas through this journaling process. In today's episodes, I'm sharing 6 steps to start a journaling habit!

"People who write down their ideas are 43% more likely to achieve them." via Dominican University

6 Ways to Start A Journaling Habit (5:38)

1. Decide when you want your creative hours to be.

2. Set a reminder to hold yourself accountable.

3. Set a timer for your writing time for 15 minutes minimum.

4. Don’t edit, just write.

5. Keep a notes tab of topics.

6. Don’t worry about creating a masterpiece, just show up.

This Episode's One Liner: The World Needs Your Bright Ideas, so let’s start by writing them down.

Season 2 is coming on September 5th! We're taking a quick break for the summer, so will you do these two things for me?

  1. Hit subscribe so you're alerted on September 5th when we return. Then leave us a review!
  2. Text HYPE to 706-228-9495 to receive my Monday morning Hype Text

Transcript:

Hey, Hey. Business on the Bright Side is taking a quick break and we will be back September 5th. Before I get into why we're taking a break, there are a few things you should do in the meantime. Number one, hit subscribe if you're not subscribed already. That way, you'll be alerted when we come back September 5th for season two. And while you're at it, would you mind leaving me a little review?

When you're searching for your next book that you want to read, or the next podcast that you want to listen to, or even the next pair of yoga pants that you want to buy on Amazon, and the first thing you do is you look at the reviews. I know I do. That's why it's super helpful for me to have reviews on my podcast. So if you could take two minutes and review it, I would really, really appreciate it. And step two, if you still want that Monday quick hit of inspiration even while we're on hiatus, I'm still sending out my Monday hype text, so text me the word hype, H-Y-P-E to (704) 228-9495. That's the word hype to (704) 228-9495

Now, why am I taking a break? My first sassy response is because I damn want to. Don't wait until you feel like you deserve a break to take one. If you're in a position where you can take a break, take it. And really, I'm saying this advice to myself as much as I'm saying it to you because I'm not going to lie, I feel like I've shifted into this high gear since the end of 2019 with Chasing the Bright Side coming out. And then, of course, there was this little global pandemic and then all the work we did at Headbands of Hope. And then there was the election, which made me sprout probably 20 gray hairs, and so much more. I'm sure you can rattle off a list of craziness over the past two years as well.

But if I'm being honest, one thing I've noticed recently is that my gear shift has been sticky. I've been stuck in this high gear for about two years and I feel like I've forgotten how to downshift. We cannot forget how to downshift because why work so hard to create a life for ourselves that we can't even enjoy? I've put a lot of time into my business getting it to a place where I can take time off if I want to. So, it's time to freaking downshift. We're exploring the Northeast in the Airstream this summer and I fully intend to stuff my face with a lot of lobster rolls and find beautiful greenways to bike along. Even if you can't take two months off, what can you do to downshift this summer? Can you move a little slower on the weekends? Can you read instead of watch TV? Can you use a French press instead of a Keurig? What are some ways that you can just maybe move a little bit slower?

Remember to hit subscribe to get the first episode when we're back on September 5th and then don't forget to join my Monday hype text, texting the word hype to (704) 228-9495. That's the way the cookie crumbles, folks. Thanks for being such an awesome community. Whether this is the first episode you've listened to or you've binged every single one of them, I appreciate you. See you all September 5th.

Did you know that most folks are more scared of public speaking than they are of sharks? It’s crazy, but it also makes sense! Whether it’s Jaws or facing a live audience, your body reacts to nerves similarly—it’s just a biological thing.

In this episode, I'm sharing tips on how to ease your nerves before a speaking engagement, whether on stage as a keynote address, in a meeting, or at a wedding.

I’ll walk you through quick tricks, like using peppermint and box breathing to calm yourself in the moment, and why making eye contact is a game changer.

So the next time you step on stage, you'll have the confidence to own it.

Lindsey Epperly has grown her travel business from a one-woman operation to a team of 80 (!!). It has been on the Inc 5000 list of fastest-growing companies, and Lindsey seemingly has it all.

And yet, even with her success, Lindsey still encounters imposter syndrome - especially when (despite the accolades) she feels like her business is failing.

Through her experiences, she realized the common pitfall of equating self-worth with success, a challenge familiar to many high achievers in today's hustle culture.

However, Lindsey's perspective shifted as she began to see imposter syndrome as a sign of stepping out of her comfort zone, using it as a motivational tool to turn obstacles into opportunities.

And here's what she learned in the process.

Have you ever finished a book and thought, "That would have been better as an article or blog post?" I think we've all experienced that.

In this episode of Business on the Bright Side, I'm sharing four ways to help you decided if your idea should be a book or a blog post. Grab yourself a pen and paper, and let's dive into this exercise!

How to Know if Your Idea Should Be a Book or a Blog Post:

  1. How long have you been thinking about it? (1:56)
  2. Does the writing flow? (3:48)
  3. Try it on for the week.
  4. Do the tree exercise. (6:28)

The Tree Exercise: (6:28)

  • Draw a tree trunk
  • In the trunk, write one central theme or transformation your book will provide.
  • Think about what people need to know in order to achieve that transformation.
  • Create a branch for each of those things you think of until you have 10-15
  • Blog Post: Less than 7 branches
  • Book: 10-15 branches

Are you approaching the tasks in your business proactively or reactively? If you're treating your business like a game of pinball, where you're just doing what you can to ensure you don't lose the ball, you're being reactive. Instead, consider ways you can treat your business like a game of bowling, where you're always focused on the strategy of knocking down the pins. Listen in as I share three ways you can leave the game of pinball that you're playing in your business behind and implement the strategy of bowling!

1. Think of your book idea as a before/after point for a reader.

2. What do you want to be known for?

4. Don't write your whole book, write your proposal.

5. Your book is your business card.

The Episode’s One Liner: All of your experiences (good, bad, and funny) add up to a story, and the value in every lesson is the story that goes with it. What story will you tell? (14:41)
