Ambition Habits - Feeling Like Your Sports Dream Is Out Of Reach

You've got a dream to be a professional athlete in your sport. Playing the sport you love! Living and breathing it. Being paid to do it. Training for it. Travelling the country amd the world competing. You have lots of fans and built a following of supporters plus you have the home you have always wanted and a really cool car to drive around in.

But how does that dream come true when it feels still so far away?

You are stuck where you are and you struggle to see yourself as that professional athlete because the reality is that you are just not there yet.

Should you stop dreaming?

Absolutely not, you must have that dream. But we have to turn it into something more than it just being in your head.

We need a map on how to get there. Like you have a map of driving from LA to New York or Sydney to Perth. You need to know what roads to take.

This is what you must do to map out your dream. We are going to start with the end in mind, work through 5 phases and work our way backwards.

PHASE 5 - LIVING YOUR SPORTS DREAM

  • detail how you are living your dream

  • what your world ranking is
  • what team you are playing with
  • who is on your team if individual sports person

Ambition Habits - Striving In Lockdown: Grinding It Out

When I say Grinding It Out I am not referring to grinding out the lockdown or guiding you through the restrictions.

What I am talking about here is doing the work. All the striving in lockdown series is designed for you to keep going, to keep pushing and to keep moving forward.

And this is the same with the Grinding It Out epsiode.

The hardest part in anything that you do is "the work".

As you know I talk about setting goals, writing up your goals for the year, the quarter, the month, the week and the day to remind yourself where you are headed. But you won't accomplish it and you won't crush it if you don't do the work.

What I want you to understand is that you have to be strategic when you are grinding it out.

It will be the quality work, the quality training and the quality practise you put in versus the quantity (amount of time).

All explained in much greater detail in this episode.

Here is how you want to approach Grinding It Out;

  1. Pick 6 areas in your sport that will move you closer to accomplishing your big sports dream.
  2. Pick 3 out of those 6 areas you have identified and work on them every second day.
  3. The other 3 areas left over work on them the alternate days.

Remember it is the quality of the effort that will give you the results that you want.

Ambition Habits - Striving In Lockdown: Overcoming The Roadblocks

We have all been thrown the biggest challenge we have had to face in our lifetime thus far with the Coronavirus (Covid-19).

It has been a surreal time.

However this will not be the only challenge, obstacle or roadblock you wil face in your life. There will always be more obstacles, roadblocks and challenges that will be thrown at you therefore we want to work through each one and never let any of them hold us back.

What we have to do here is understand that there will be a number of skills that we will be developing now to overcome the roadblocks in our way.

And this is the series of questions I want you to ask yourself each time you are thrown a roadblock, challenge or obstacle.

  1. What are the roadblocks, challenges or obstacles that are in your way right now?
  2. For each roadblock, challenge or obstacle brainstorm ideas how you can oversome them.
  3. What are the action steps you will put in place to overcome the roadblock, challenge or obstacle?
  4. What days will you work on these throughout your week?

Ambition Habits - Striving In Lockdown: Essential Habits

More than ever I believe that this is the time you must redefine your habits that will help you strive forward rather than having habits that leave you flundering in fear, anxiety, stress, sad or depressed.

We don't want to be floundering!

  • It's easy to stop.
  • It's easy to give up.
  • It's easy not to work.
  • It's easy to do nothing.

This is because we have had our purpose taken away from us and we have lost control in our sport and in our lives.

However, you can take the control back in your life and because we are starting to come out of lockdown restrictions from around the world, it will be easy to keep going with the habits we have picked up when we have been more confined.

Here are some habits you may have picked up;

  • going to bed later than normal.
  • sleeping in.
  • eating junk food alot more.
  • drinking sugary drinks.
  • not training.
  • not practicing.
  • not working on our mindset.
  • not focused on our goals.
  • being lazy in general.

Simply because we were told to stay at home. Some of use have treated it more like a holiday. But when we get into holiday mode then we get into those habits that don't serve us.

It's time to get back and re-focus!

This is what I want you to do!

  1. Identify all the habits you have developed in lockdown.
  2. For each habit ask the question - does this habit move me closer or further away from any goal?
    (if answer is further away - eliminate the habit)
    (if answer is toward - keep the habit)
  3. What new habits can you impliment to get you closer to your goal?

Ambition Habits - Striving In Lockdown: Foundations Are Key

Welcome to the Striving in Lockdown series.

We can get complacent being in lockdown but we will not let this happen to us, will we? Of course not!

There are two most important areas you must be working on in your sport.

  1. Your technical skills
  2. Your mental skills

They both work hand in hand.

How your mental approach is to your technical skills will affect whether you master your techincal skills. How your mental approach is to your mental skills will also affect whether you master your mental side of your game.

At this moment in time, because of Covid-19 you have an opportunity here to knuckle down and improve your technical skills and your mental skills.

Why is there an opportunity?

Because you are not competing therefore you have an opportunity to refine and work on your skills. Your skills are the foundations so we want to ensure you take advantage of working on them.

There are 2 Challenges I have set for you;

  1. Choose a technical skill that you are weak at or avoid and work on it for 10 minutes per day.
  2. Choose a mental skill that you are weak at or avoid and work on it for 10 minutes per day.
  3. Work on both of these skills for 30 days and share the results with me after that time.

This is the final part of the three part episodes for goal setting for this quarter.

This is where you will be able to break the goals down into months and weeks to make them achievable chunks. That's the best way to accomplish goals in bite size chunks.

All you will need is two A4 sheets of paper to do this.

STEP 1: WHAT MUST BE TRUE BY THE END OF EACH MONTH
Draw up 2 columns one called Life Destiny and the other Sport Destiny.
Each column should have 4 rows.

First Column - LIFE DESTINY
In 1st Row:
Write out your goals for Life Destiny for the Quarter.

In 2nd Row:
Answer what must be true by the end of April.

In 3rd Row:
Answer what must be true by the end of May.

In 4th Row:
Answer what must be true by the end of June.

Second Column - SPORT DESTINY
In 1st Row:
Write out your goals for Sport Destiny for the Quarter.

In 2nd Row:
Answer what must be true by the end of April.

In 3rd Row:
Answer what must be true by the end of May.

In 4th Row:
Answer what must be true by the end of June.

STEP 2: WHAT MUST BE TRUE BY THE END OF THIS MONTH
Draw up 2 columns one called Life Destiny and the other Sport Destiny.

First Column - LIFE DESTINY
In 1st Row:
Write out your goals for Life Destiny for the Month (April).

Below this row draw out 4 boxes . In each box write;

  • Week 1 - what must be true by end of week 1.
  • Week 2 - what must be true by end of week 2.
  • Week 3 - what must be true by end of week 3.
  • Week 4 - what must be true by end of week 4.

Then answer in each week what you want to accomplish according to the goals you have written out for this month.

Second Column - SPORT DESTINY
In 1st Row:
Write out your goals for Sport Destiny for the Month (April).

Below this row draw out 4 boxes . In each box write;

  • Week 1 - what must be true by end of week 1.
  • Week 2 - what must be true by end of week 2.
  • Week 3 - what must be true by end of week 3.
  • Week 4 - what must be true by end of week 4.

Then answer in each week what you want to accomplish according to the goals you have written out for this month.

Ambition Habits - What To Do When You Hit A Plateau

How would you know if you have hit a plateau?

Let's have a look at what a plateau looks like;

  • you are working really hard and not seeng any change.
  • the harder you work you feel like you are going backwards.
  • there is no progress in your development.
  • you question whether your training and practice methods are right.
  • you are furstrated because there is no change.
  • you are angry.
  • you question and doubt yourself, are you doing the right things?

Should you make changes or should you keep going?

And yes it's a really frustrating place to be in because you are not seeing any progress and we always like to see progress. We actually like to see it all the time. And if we don't see it we believe we are not improving.

The reason for that is because we always want to be moving forward.

This is what happens when we set a goal;

  • we plan it out.
  • we have all the elements in the plan we have to work on.
  • we set goals for the year, quarter, month, week and day that we want to accomplish.

It's exciting because we have set the vision for what we want.

Then, we begin to work on the plan.

Initially it is exciting because it is new and a change from what we were doing before and we get right down into it and work really hard at it.

And yes we see progress in the beginning therefore, we expect that it will continue.

But at some point it slows down;

  • it gets boring.
  • it gets hard.
  • it gets frustrating.

The progress has slowed down or it feels as though it has stopped.

What do you do?

Do you stop, do you keep going or do you make changes?

How do you know if the progress has stopped?

Just by how you feel or whether you have won or lost?

Well, that won't give you a good enough indication. What we want to see is see the data. It is much deeper than a win or a loss.

This is all explained in detail in this episode so make sure you listen and get your note book out. You have some work to do.

Here are the 6 Steps of what to do if you hit a plateau:

  1. Identify a specific are in your sport that needs work.
  2. Create a way to track that area.
  3. Do it over a 4 week period.
  4. Compare the data you have accumulated.
  5. If you see progress keep going - If you don't do no.6.
  6. Break down specifics in technqiue to improve.
