Ep 4: Stacey George on banks, business, babies and the art of Smartart
Stacey George shares the story of her company, Smartart, a high end picture framing business sought after by South Australia’s top architects, designers and premium home owners. Stacey talks about finally starting her own business, which had been a dream since she was 13. But of course reality had much more ups and downs than expected. The banks wouldn’t back her, and she was forced to borrow money privately. Finding the right premises was another ordeal. Stacey narrowly avoided a period of business homelessness, moving her factory, stock, showroom and office twice in three months. Not to mention the challenges of juggling all of this with three young children. BUT .. there’s been plenty of highs, and valuable lessons learned, which Stacey shares in our interview. Ep 6: Entrepreneur Education (Part 1): Prof. Fredric Kropp
Our next few episodes focus on entrepreneurship education, which is somewhat contentious, because a lot of discourse around the topic is built on stories of the ‘self-made founder', 'university drop out' and learning as you go. So, we’re investigating this issue of education for entrepreneurs and business owners, starting with a conversation with Professor Fredric Kropp. Fredric has been professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California and also at the University of Adelaide. He also spent 20 years working with consulting firms, specialising in forecasting, marketing and policy analysis. He was educated at Northeastern University in Boston, University of Southern California and University of Oregon. We talk about key attributes of successful entrepreneurs, key fundamentals for teaching entrepreneurship, the emergence of social entrepreneurship and much more.
