A Big Mouthful - Domestic Violence & Abuse

Domestic Violence & Abuse

05/08/20 • 43 min

A Big Mouthful

In episode 6, the theme of isolation is continued, but this time, focusing on domestic violence and abuse.

Domestic violence and abuse (DVA) is a very serious concern that everyone as well as all healthcare professionals and practitioners might encounter in our practices and daily lives. Anyone of us could meet someone who is a victim-survivor seeking support to deal with the impact of DVA. All Healthcare professional/practitioners can play a very important role in identifying, referring, and responding to the people we meet. Friends and families (as well as heath care professionals) need to understand the phenomenon of DVA and how it presents.

This episode provides an overview of prevalence, presentation, and impact on the psychological health of the victim-survivor.

My guest for this podcast to discuss the subject is a professor in sociology at Durham University. She has been involved in research into the lives of LGB & T people for 25 years, she is Professor Catherine Donovan.

Black Lives Really Do Matter

No one should ever experience discrimination, violence, hatred, condemnation, prejudice, abuse, fetishisation or be oppressed because of the colour of their skin.
The language that is still used today to identify people of colour is appalling and the biases associated with people from different countries is disgusting.
My guest for this episode’s conversation is an amazing young black woman.

She lives in London and is a fund raiser for a charity that supports young people affected by violence and exploitation. She has volunteered for Living free UK which is a community interest company who support LGBT+ Africans and Asylum seekers.

She has co organised a panel while at Uni on Decolonising Geographies and was part of the Stonewall BAME People of Colour Young Campaigners Programme. She has also been involved in hosting events for queer people of colour.

I first came into contact wither her after reading her article called “Dear White Gays” and thought I need to talk to this woman and get her on as a guest.
