Carolyn's Journey from aversion to accepting
A Big Mouthful
12/13/20 • 53 min
I introduced myself to Carolyn after seeing her speak at a Stonewall Event.
She spoke on a topic that I have wanted to discuss on the podcast but to date, had not found anyone who I could invite on as a guest.
Carolyn gives a very candid account of her experiences of aversion therapy and talks to me about how her self hatred drove her to seek this intervention.
Carolyn talks about how she is still struggling with letting herself experience positive emotions. She is however, still developing herself to achieve this.
She is an absolutely amazing woman and I hope our conversation helps you, especially if you struggling with who you are.
It is important to warn you that this episode has an extract from the short film by Andrew Cardinal called Carolyn- A survivor of aversion therapy. In that extract, Carolyn talks explicitly of her experiences of aversion therapy.

Discussing Resilience
A Big Mouthful
01/17/21 • 63 min
In this, the first episode of 2021, I thought it was important just to look at resilience and to discuss what we can do to help improve or maybe bolster pour self worth and well being to ensure that we feel able enough to get through yet another lock down.
Debbie Wood (Psychological Therapist) joins me again to have a great discussion on this topic.

Domestic Violence & Abuse
A Big Mouthful
05/08/20 • 43 min
In episode 6, the theme of isolation is continued, but this time, focusing on domestic violence and abuse.
Domestic violence and abuse (DVA) is a very serious concern that everyone as well as all healthcare professionals and practitioners might encounter in our practices and daily lives. Anyone of us could meet someone who is a victim-survivor seeking support to deal with the impact of DVA. All Healthcare professional/practitioners can play a very important role in identifying, referring, and responding to the people we meet. Friends and families (as well as heath care professionals) need to understand the phenomenon of DVA and how it presents.
This episode provides an overview of prevalence, presentation, and impact on the psychological health of the victim-survivor.
My guest for this podcast to discuss the subject is a professor in sociology at Durham University. She has been involved in research into the lives of LGB & T people for 25 years, she is Professor Catherine Donovan.

It's Christmas - How to look after our Mental Health.
A Big Mouthful
12/19/21 • 24 min
Christmas can be a difficult time of the year for so many reasons.
It can increase a sense of sorrow, loss, isolation, despondency, failure, regret and despair to identify just a few issues.
It can also be a time of over indulgence in many areas, food, alcohol, drugs, sex, risk taking behaviours, anger and for some being abused.
This episode doesn't try to resolve all those issues but it does look at what we can do to feel empowered, to be mindful, present and hopefully more resilient.
Please do not forget to subscribe to A Big Mouthful and email me with any thoughts about what you have listened to and with any suggestions for what you would like to hear.
Details are below along with some useful links to accompany this episode.
I hope your Christmas or festive season is all you would want it to be.
See you in 2022.

Those bereaved by suicide often feel isolated at a time when they are hurting, suffering mental anguish and are vulnerable themselves to thoughts of suicide. Even those fortunate enough to have strong support networks can still feel alone, unable to share their true feelings for fear of their impact on others, particularly when they are also in a caring role for others who are bereaved.
