Like many, after the injury she lost her job, her hobbies, and many of her friends. But she also found her spark, her energy and her confidence during these toughest of times.
Today Kristen finds herself in a very good spot, and is in year 1 of her PhD at Rice University in Texas.

132: Exercise and TBI's
A Battle Within
08/30/21 • 39 min
Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!
Here we go with episode 132!
Today's chat is built around exercise after experiencing a Traumatic Brain Injury. We explore some ways that it is beneficial and pass along some comments from some scientific study on the subject. We all know that movement and exercise in general is good for us, but it can be even more challenging to those in this community to get started or continue.
Terry has a very unique perspective on the subject. She was workout machine, a certified personal trainer, and a Special Education teacher prior to her last injury. Currently she is building a modified program for herself. Blending these three attributes together really offers some cool insight into the topic discussed today.
We touch base on some science, the specific benefits for TBI Warriors, starting where you are at, as well as offering some strategies. As an added bonus we also pass along some pointers to the Battle Buddies and how they may be able to help their loved one along.

096: Connecting Heads and Hearts with Kelly O'Neill
A Battle Within
12/21/20 • 47 min
Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!
Welcome to A BATTLE WITHIN, Episode 096. Today we are joined by special guest Kelly O'Neill From B is For Brain.
A BATTLE WITHIN is about our life experiences and those of our guests living with and healing from Traumatic Brain Injuries with an emphasis on the Post Concussion Syndrome otherwise known as (PCS)
The conversations are real, raw and uncensored from both the warrior and caregiver perspectives.
It is our desire that this platform be a useful way to create awareness around the invisible injury. We aim to help those in the battle, whether that is you the Warrior or you the Battle Buddy by offering the stories and resources we have found along the way in our own journey..
To preview the conversation with Kelly O'Neill. If you have been around here for any period of time you know we talk about the fact that a Traumatic Brain Injury deeply affects many people, not just the injured person.
That was certainly the case for Kelly. Her dear friend Tyler is hit by a car on his bicycle back in 2013. During his recovery he had a series of serious setbacks and obstacles to overcome. During all of this Kelly was not only very present, but extremely active in helping Tyler recover.
Tyler's accident and injuries drastically changed how Kelly approaches life in the most significant ways. Today they remain the closest of friends and have put themselves forward to help others through B is for Brain.
Through this platform they connect heads and hearts through inclusive yoga where the proceeds go to support brain injury survivors.
Listen in to find out why Tyler is the best human ever and exactly why he is Kelly's real life super hero!

007: An Adult Child's Perspective
A Battle Within
04/08/19 • 23 min
A podcast about our journey together with Post Concussion Syndrome and lessons learned. I'm Drew Niemann and I'm joined by Terry Niemann, my wife and the inspiration for the podcast.
For the first time we have a guest! Brooke Niemann our daughter will be joining us for a conversation.
Frankly- we are putting her in the hot seat!
If it's your first time here and you aren't sure what exactly Post Concussion Syndrome is, I'd recommend checking out Episode #1. To learn a little about our backstory, Episodes 2 and 3 would be very helpful.
Today Terry and I ask Brooke what it has been like for as an adult child whose mother has been greatly affected by the concussions and the PCS that has followed.
We believe it is extremely important to understand what family members are going through as well with obstacles like these. Give a listen and hopefully it helps.
