Beth Henkes: Founder & CEO of The Idea Hound Shares Interview Feedback Spanning From "Over Qualified" to "Not Enough Scope"
04/12/23 • 67 min
Beth Henkes is the Founder and CEO of The Idea Hound and truly brings order to disorder with expected organization and assessment skills but adds creative flair that allows her to achieve unexpected success in challenging circumstances.
As a former Production Stage Manager in live production, she is an expert in crisis management, able to handle multiple moving parts and tight deadlines with ease. Her years in service spaces gives her exceptional customer experience prowess, she builds teams that provide views into all parts of a process to solve problems and create improvements while emphasizing unheard voices.
So it is extremely frustrating to hear this energetic, creative, smart powerhouse share her tally of having 28 interviews from 12 referrals spanning 16 companies resulting in zero offers over a 12 month period. How can that possibly be?
If that's not ageism, what is?
Beth is the kind of person you could put in anywhere and she would kindly and firmly create order and results. I would recommend her in a heartbeat. I'd hire her if I had a company that wasn't a one woman show! She shares her wisdom and wit in this interview. Enjoy the ride.

Nova Newcomer; Director of Seattle Mariners Care Foundation Shares How Taking Risks In Your Career Is The One Thing You Can Do For Yourself
Nova Newcomer is the Director Community Relations and Mariners Care Foundation spent a lifetime getting prepared for this role. Nova's love of baseball began as a child. During two years in Foster Care, Nova was allowed to stay in Little League, a place where she felt seen, where she had friends and where she had fun. She's not sure who paid for her spot in Little League, her community came together for her to be there and she has given back to sport of baseball nearly continuously ever since.
She spent several years working for adidas where she learned the ins-and-outs of a big international communications role. When offered an opportunity to make a big leap forward, she realized that it was a great opportunity....for someone else.
Leaving to start her own communications consultancy, Nova wanted the non-profit world to benefit from the best marketing, branding , communications, and processes to carry out mission driven work. Her company was integral in the founding of the Center for Women's Leadership at Portland State University.
Nova sat on the Board of Friends of Baseball until they had an applicant that resonated so strongly with her that she resigned from her position to put her hat in the ring to become the Executive Director of the organization. Nova discusses her passion for using baseball and softball to support youth and families and her goal to expand access to these sports.
After eight years she realized that she was ready for something broader and resigned without a new job lined up. It was a bold move and a big risk that paid off.
Nova emphasizes the importance of taking risks in one's career and pursuing work that inspires and fulfills you. "Do your heart's work" she says. Inspiring, to say the least.

Barbara Birke: Why Being Healthily Selfish is Better for Everybody
Barbara Birke brings an impressive depth of experience to her work as a holistic health coach. Sports scientist, mindset coach, nutritionist, health coach with a background in the sporting goods industry, Barbara helps you "find your thrive".
In this wonderfully informative episode, we laugh a lot about being an age where there are lots of households with hormonal teens and hormonal moms...and how the side effects that can really suck, don't have to suck that badly after all.
Moms are moving into the "no B.S." phase of their lives just at the time it feels their teens are moving into the "it's all B.S." point of their lives.
Listen in and learn why it is best for everybody when you are healthy selfish; guard your sleep, eat nutritiously, don't let your blood sugar yo-yo all around, move and manage your stress.
She ends with three tips:
1. 7-9 hours of sleep
2. Eat a plant-forward diet and mind your gut health
3. Get outside for 20 minutes every day
