Beth Henkes is the Founder and CEO of The Idea Hound and truly brings order to disorder with expected organization and assessment skills but adds creative flair that allows her to achieve unexpected success in challenging circumstances.
As a former Production Stage Manager in live production, she is an expert in crisis management, able to handle multiple moving parts and tight deadlines with ease. Her years in service spaces gives her exceptional customer experience prowess, she builds teams that provide views into all parts of a process to solve problems and create improvements while emphasizing unheard voices.
So it is extremely frustrating to hear this energetic, creative, smart powerhouse share her tally of having 28 interviews from 12 referrals spanning 16 companies resulting in zero offers over a 12 month period. How can that possibly be?
If that's not ageism, what is?
Beth is the kind of person you could put in anywhere and she would kindly and firmly create order and results. I would recommend her in a heartbeat. I'd hire her if I had a company that wasn't a one woman show! She shares her wisdom and wit in this interview. Enjoy the ride.

Discover the fascinating journey of a woman who describes her life as continually being lucky and falling "ass backward into clover". She's funny, she's smart, and she obviously works her ass off.
Michelle Little, a Senior Program Manager of global logistics at Google, discusses her unconventional and extraordinary path to success after success and the various industries she has worked in, including international trade, law, fashion, and supply chain management. Everywhere she has gone she has made impact. She is damn impressive.
Being discouraged from pursuing math-related fields "as a woman", she found her passion in political science and international trade. Michelle shares how she stumbled into different career opportunities, including working in export management and serving as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill, where she contributed to historic trade legislation.
After contemplating a career in law (a few times), Michelle decided to follow her desire for happiness and joined the fashion industry in California. She gained valuable experience in supply chain management and worked with renowned brands, discovering the intricacies of turning raw materials into profitable products.
Throughout her journey, Michelle emphasizes the importance of timing and luck in one's success, citing Bill Gates as an example. She shares stories about the companies she worked for, their unique approaches, and the pride employees took in their work.
Michelle's journey faced a turning point when a family crisis arose, leading her back to her home sate of Ohio. You'll love how she found herself again and pulled herself out of grief by badgering a local contractor into giving her the manager's phone number of the new Starbucks he was building near her home.

At 50, Barbara Simon-Evronsoglu's department, in a large, white-male dominant company, was dissolved. She watched from the outside as it was reconstructed by a younger man. Initially crushing, Barbara ultimately realized that the job hadn't been that great at all. She was then able to accept the layoff with grace and she reconnected with her kids, with her family and with friends all over the globe.
After six years though she realized, "I'm not done yet". She wanted to work. She had more to do, more to give, more to learn.
Listen in as this seasoned leader describes with honesty and candor, in her own words and through her own lens, what it is like to be a female in her 50's in a male dominated industry. How grateful she was that the company that hired her "took a chance" on a "middle-aged" woman. There was no response from them when she pointed that out.
She sees that she is one of the only women at her level but is hopeful that by "doing the right thing", this company can inspire its own leaders and leaders in other companies, and in other industries, by the halo effect.
Do the right thing, hire qualified people of all ages, genders, and races and be the frontrunner, not the one that lags. It has not been a quick, clean road; not for Barbara, not for any of us.
It's been a real road though. One that many women will be able to relate.

Fashion Design to "Financial Design"; a powerful and unexpected pivot.
20 years into her design career at the renowned handbag company, Coach, Kim Cullen Black had just purchased a house when she was laid off.
In a family of 5 siblings, Kim was the one who was "just jobless", when their father passed away. Every one of the other 4 was going through major health crises - either their own or their spouses. It fell to Kim to help her mom pick up the pieces and figure out where she stood financially.
"Have you ever considered being a financial planner?"
It was a question posed to her by the female financial planner she and her mom were working with. Kim gave a decisive "NO".
Kim and I dive into the inspiring journey of resilience and reinvention amidst life's challenges. Kim, a financial advisor with roots in the design and creative industry, shares her personal narrative of feeling overlooked and discarded, only to emerge stronger and more determined than ever.
We explore her transition from the design world to financial advising, highlighting the creativity and problem-solving skills that shape her approach to numbers-driven fields.
Kim's insights from her own experiences underscore the importance of empathy in financial advising and navigating life's uncertainties. As our discussion unfolds, we reflect on the transformative power of connection and the capacity for growth and reinvention at any age. I am deeply grateful to Kim for sharing her story.

While looking for a resume to update in 2013, Kristen Falso-Capaldi landed on a treasure trove of writing she'd begun years before. It re-ignited a creative spark in her that blossomed from writing (SEVERAL pieces published, a book being shopped and another complete), to painting, film directing, screen-play writing and production design. As she succinctly puts it; her dream is to make shit and monetize it!
Listen in as this public school teacher describes her transition from teaching into full time artist.
Quoting David Bowie, "Aging is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been."
Looking at aging as a process of truly becoming herself, Kristen inspires us to not wait until we're ready.

And society is saying that this is the age when women become invisible. That’s not going to be my story. And if I can help it, it’s not going to be yours, either.
