My guest today is Hollie Smith.

Hollie Smith is one of New Zealand's most predominant & iconic musicians.

After working with numerous bands including Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Detroit dance legend Recloose, she was approached by NZ songwriting royalty Don McGlashan to perform on a movie soundtrack single ‘Bathe in The River’ that topped the New Zealand singles charts and became one of the biggest and iconic singles in New Zealand history.

This set the stage for Hollie’s debut album ‘Long Player’ released in 2007 which went straight to number one on the NZ charts. The album reached multi-platinum status, and was followed with sold out tours and then saw her take away several NZ music awards that year which included ‘Best Producer’, ‘Best Female Solo Artist’ and ‘Breakthrough artist of the year’.

Hollie has gone on to record 2 more solo albums, "Humour and the Misfortune of Others", and "Water or Gold". And she’s has recently begun production on a long awaited new album.

Hollie Smith is a prolific hardworking singer/songwriter and performer, and has always maintained a highly respected reputation of creating music with the upmost integrity & passion, not to mention her incredible live performances and powerhouse vocals.

A well as Eskimo Joe, Kav co-formed soul collective Basement Birds, started a small indie record Label called Dirt Diamond Productions, he’s written and released some solo music as well as being a prolific songwriter and a songwriting mentor for young musicians. Kav and his wife Beth (aka Studio Cat) also have their own Podcast called HatJam. In the chat, Kav and I talk about his early days growing up in Fremantle, picking up the bass, almost going to jazz school, forming a school band, winning the campus band comp which won them a recording session, to eventually forming Eskimo Joe. 21 years later, the Eskies are still going strong. We also talk of course about HatJam Podcast which you must go and check out. I think its fantastic. Just a warning to you, there is drug talk and references in this episode so if you don’t like to hear that kind of thing, best not listen to this one. So without further adieu, ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for Kav Temperley. Episode recorded 28/04/2020. Intro Music: From the Sea - Eskimo Joe (A Song Is a City)

Gordon Rytmeister.

Drummer from Sydney, Australia.

When you look at the upper echelon of any field, there’s usually a handful of people that come to mind, right? Within the Australian drumming community, Gordo is one of those people.
You only need to google his name to see the enormous body of work he’s amassed over his 3 + decades on the instrument. And that work continues, as he’s still one of the most in demand drummers around. Attitude, facility and reliability keep Gordo as that first call guy, be it sessions or live gigs for jazz, big band, pop, rock, fusion and even metal.

Some of the people Gordon has worked with are: Don Burrows, Steve Hunter, James Morrison, Australian Idol House Band, Steve Vizzard Show, Bob Mintzer, Emma Pask, Mark Costa, Leo Sayer, Bob James, Tom Jones, Bob Florence, The Commodores, Bob Geldof, Barry Harris, Nat Adderley, Maria Schnieder, Lee Konitz, Glenn Shorrock (from Little River Band), Alex Koritni, Tina Arena, The Sydney All Star Big Band, Roger Frampton, Bobby Shew, Anthony Warlow, Russell Watson, Rob McConnell, Don Rader, Dale Barlow, Eartha Kitt, Jimmy Barnes and many, many more.

This episode is Part 1 of 2. (Part 2 coming soon...)

My guest today is Stan Bicknell.

Stan is a NZ born drummer who for the past 13 years has based himself out of Melbourne Australia. In this time he has toured and recorded with many artists locally and internationally including 48May, Miami Horror, Tonight Alive, Ecca Vandal, and Kimbra.

During his time with Kimbra, Stan played on her acclaimed debut album ‘Vows’. His Motown grooves can be heard on the track ‘Cameo Lover’ which won both an Aria and APRA award, as well as playing on her now iconic ‘Sing Sing’ sessions on YouTube, clocking up millions of views.

Stan has a strong online presence, which in 2018 was noticed by Jared Falk, the owner and creator of Canadian based drum education platform ‘Drumeo’. Jared invited Stan on to Drumeo where he spent two days performing and recording songs and courses based on his ability behind the kit, and his unique single kick technique that has since taken the drumming community by storm.

Stan is a frequent performer at drum festivals as well as where he likes to share his unique approach to the drums, and his strong mindset that goes with it.

Now based back in Papamoa NZ, Stan is excited to be back home. Already he’s been called in as backup for NZ drum and bass juggernauts, Shapeshifter, as well as kicking off a couple of new projects himself.

Stan's a coffee nut, an incredibly gifted musician and just a bloody nice guy.
