The Gig Life Podcast
TO CELEBRATE JACO PASTORIUS' 70TH BIRTHDAY (1/12/21) HERE IS TGLP SPOTLIGHT: JACO PASTORIUS IN REPLAY. John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III, born December 1 1951, was an American bass player and composer. Jaco was a member of Weather Report from 1976 to 1981. He worked with Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell, Paul Bley and Herbie Hancock amongst others, and recorded albums as a solo artist and band leader. His bass playing employed funk, lyrical solos, bass chords, and innovative harmonics. Jaco tragically died on September 21, 1987. He was 35 years old. He has been called "the most important and ground-breaking electric bassist in history" and "perhaps the most influential electric bassist today”. Joining me today to talk about Jaco are 4 Australia’s premier bass players and friends of mine. Steve Hunter, Victor Rounds, Mark Costa and Adm Ventoura. These gentleman have all been guests on the gig life podcast previously, so for more info and the individual interviews with these guys, please check out thegiglifepodcast.com or click on their links. We have all chosen a bunch of songs that Jaco has played on, and maybe some you wouldn’t expect to hear. We’ll listen to those songs and give you our take on them. We’ll talk about his influence, his sound and his legacy and hopefully do our bit to add to that legacy. So ladies and gentlemen, it's time to turn the spotlight onto the greatest bass player in the world, Jaco Pastorius. Track Listing:
