In this episode, Marc and Tavarus discuss the importance of having the right circle of influence around you and the right people in your corner, at the right time, and for all the right reasons.
There's a popular statement used by large corporations and successful people around the world, and it reveals one of the secretes to success. The statement goes like this, "No one gets there alone". So true! We've heard for years that "it's not always about what you know, but who you know"! There's so much packed in that one statement, and the goal of this episode is to help unpack it, and give practical steps as to HOW to apply this truth to ones life. We firmly believe that growth happens in community. Elevation thrives in relationships with others who fall in one of 3 categories of your "Developmental Network". Those levels are:
1. Peers
2. Mentors
3. Sponsors

Each of these levels are absolutely necessary for growth, development and expansion. They work perfectly in tandem with each other, yet one doesn't yield "best hopes" without the other.

In this episode Marc and Tavarus revisit a conversation that was sparked on one of their many "power trips", this one to Spartanburg, SC specifically. What started as an epiphany moment for Marc after meeting several successful members of Tavarus's family, ended in a conversation about genetics, DNA, family traits and wealth.
It was evident early on upon meeting Tavarus's family that there were inherent family values around hard work, persistence, dedication, entrepreneurship, and the enjoyment of the "pay off". What wasn't so easily detected was the fact that all of these values weren't necessarily passed down; some where acquired, picked up along the way and incorporated at the appropriate time.
I (Marc) was also shocked to realize that our backgrounds, though starkly different, aligned in many ways as well. We like Tavarus's immediate family, were very poor early on in life. We ate from dumpsters, lived on a toxic waste dump site, surrounded by death, disease and addictive behaviors. Much of which was passed or handed down to me genetically. However, and oddly enough, we were very rich in love, family support, faith and "grit".
In this episode, Marc and Tavarus go on to discuss topics such as:

Loyalty is often times displayed in the most challenging of times.
The famous group Whodini released a song in the 80’s that became an anthem for loyalty and friendships! The lyrics are a perfect backdrop for this episode. For all of our millennial and younger listeners, check out some of the lyrics:

In this episode of 2 Men 1 Mic, Marc and Tavarus dissect a few nuances related to loyalty. Loyalty has been associated with such terms as support, allegiance, and faithfulness to name a few.
Marc and Tavarus dive into an interesting conversation about loyalty in the context of friendships, marriage, gender based stereotypes, and our various cultural influences. What does this word mean to you?

These prophetic rappers leaned in on the concept of loyalty from a friendship standpoint so much so that many of who grew up in that era adopted these lyrics as the “code” on loyalty. Again, what are your thoughts about loyalty and relationships?

In this episode, Marc and Tavarus dive into a rich conversation with the founder and CEO of THE First HBCU Themed Elementary School, Cameron Frazier.

Amongst many other accolades, Cameron is the proud Founder and Principal of Becoming Collegiate Academy; a first of its kind aimed at educating and raising up strong students who are proud of their heritage and are ultimately poised to be world changers, just like Cameron. He’s a “son” of the Eastside community of Jacksonville, FL, where he returned and spent his early years of teaching as a way to give back and pay it forward.

In this interview, Cameron shares his passion, his vision, his dreams, and pieces of his story with Marc and Tavarus in a candid and heartfelt way. He speaks about his drive to help Black and Brown students experience a sense of “belonging” similar to the ethos that is so often experienced and celebrated on the campuses of HBCUs across America. He believes this model will not only instill pride in these students, but will also help lift the HBCU experience up beyond age old negative stereotypes, and elevate them and their unique communities to their rightful place in the history of this great country.

Not only does she bring sheer Connoisseurship to the conversation, but she's also the first guest speaker on the show!
Dr. Jones has years of experience in this space and has dedicated her life to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. She shares with our audience some of her personal story and how she came into this line of work, as well as other invaluable information about her journey as a mental health care professional.
Dr. Jones has a God-given passion to bring awareness to communities and people groups everywhere, however her heart bleeds for African American and other disenfranchised communities who don't normally have access to this information nor resources to help them cope with and normalize mental health.
