Living a Debt-Free Life with Vera Jimenez
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
03/17/23 • 34 min
Learn how to be resourceful with your money, and you’ll be investing in a better future.
Vera Jimenez is a weather person, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who shares tips and tricks for making your money work for you. So many money-making gurus gatekeep their knowledge and make opportunities seem few and far between, but this is not the case because there are plenty of opportunities for smart investments and managing your money wisely.
The key is having the passion for obtaining your goals and starting your ventures, but quickly switching to business mode and knowing when it’s time to sell and move on. Seek out networking groups, take a course, listen to a podcast, and pay it forward by sharing what you learn with other women. Don’t let your money scare you, make it work for you!
🏭 Vera was the youngest of 6 kids in a family without a father: her mother dreamed a life for Vera that doesn't involve working in a factory. 03:29
💼 Vera's mother saw entrepreneurship as misery, uncertainty, and fear, but Vera wanted to be her own boss: she started working at 15. 05:32
🚘 You're allowed to go into debt only for a house and a car: Vera leads a debt-free lifestyle. 10:13
🔵 Entrepreneurs fall in love with their idea so much that they forget to take the emotion out and think logically: Vera sold the restaurant right before Covid, bought a property she fell in love with, and then had to short-sell it. 12:26
💰 We mom-mode our businesses, so we forget to be tough: if you're going to buy property, you have to make a profit the day that you purchase it. 18:09
✅ Always look at the market you're buying in if you want to be a real estate investor. 21:03
💲 Vera owns homes, invests in a commercial real estate trust, invests with partners, and lends finances: money is energy - it goes out and comes back in, so spending well is as significant as earning well. 23:54
❤️ People move to California to feel that connection with nature: the risk-reward is valid. 30:20

The Power of Cultivating a High-Performance Team and The Right Mindset with Victoria Hajjar
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
06/21/24 • 46 min
To have a successful business, the first person we need to learn to lead is ourselves.
Victoria is the CEO of Ugli Ventures, a marketing consultancy for 6-figure female founders, and a podcaster. Victoria focuses on female entrepreneurs and optimizing sales and marketing strategies, team building and leadership development to establish sustainable, profitable 7-figure enterprises. She has cultivated global brands across various sectors and countries including the US, the UK, China, Sri Lanka, the UAE and Mexico.
Over the course of her career, Victoria has observed that men typically possess a mindset wherein they’re less likely to feel the need to perfect every aspect themselves before delegating tasks. Contrastingly - and generally, women entrepreneurs often feel the need to ‘do it all’ and end up focused on lower level tasks that hinder their businesses momentum. To move more efficiently towards success, it is essential to understand your business from a higher strategic level, envision what success looks like, and rise above the weeds. This high-level perspective allows one to more easily build a scalable marketing machine.
Victoria believes women must do all they can to learn to delegate more effectively and focus on team building to drive business growth. The commitment mindset is something every business owner needs: create the goal, write real numbers down on paper, and check in on them every single week so you can adjust and keep the eye on the prize!
Let’s all commit to delegation for success!
Notes:
👩💼 Victoria is on a mission to help women entrepreneurs to success by focusing on a more feminine approach to running businesses rather than adopting the male way of working. 04:13
🤷♀️ How to create a successful marketing department: don’t do things alone - nurture your team. 09:38
🗝️ Delegation is the key to growth. 16:27
🧐 Hiring a team when you don’t have enough funds: who do you need in the team? 21:07

29. Using The “3C’s” to Get To Authentic & Genuine Communication, with Jill Katz
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
11/27/20 • 30 min
🤩Jill’s company focuses on the four critical C's of all company life, which is culture, communication, conflict and change. 2:33
🚦 Like every other entrepreneur, for years, Jill wanted to start her own business, but stopped herself on several occasions. 4:01
🤯 Jill observes the exact same issues across multiple industries. That’s why she focuses on opportunities to solve people’s problems. 5:20
🛑 People are oftentimes fearful in their workplaces, because of company culture, limited feedback mechanisms, which leads to workers shutting down communications completely. 7:46
💃 Jill’s 3C’s model of sharing feedback with Candor, Courage, and Care is bringing back personal authenticity to work lives and helps both productivity and stress reduction. 11:28
🫂 The 3C’s model is not good only for work but it highly improves all relationships because it is all about people. 14:00
✌️ HR Assemble is company agnostic, but focus on choosing to work with leaders that have the right mindset. 16:18
🙋♀️ We need a more humane corporate world and innovative leaders who recognize this. 18:16
🙃 It's not always easy to explain to a group of cross functional partners or a leadership team that everything's going to be done in a different way. 20:26
🌸 At the end of day, culture is how we live and what we choose to do. Every business owner should define it from the start of creating a business or it will define itself. 24:57

🙌 Hello again, Linda - an old friend and previous speaker at the She Leads 2016 Conference in NYC. 2:12
😇 Multi-passionate people like us are known as 'scanners', according to Barbara Sher, who recently passed away. 4:39
🪖 Linda joined the military when she was just 17 years old! 6:20
🌞 She is a huge proponent of mentorship, as she greatly benefited from people who were speaking positivity into her life. 9:26
🤯 Linda was a top-of-her class naval flight officer, flying from aircraft carriers. She was the first woman who was successfully ejected from an aircraft - to great honor. She went on to become a program manager for major aviation programs in the Navy. 11:40
📖 Linda’s book ‘Military Fly Moms’ was published in 2012 and recounts stories of 70 women in the military. 16:30
🙋♀️ We typically hear one or two ‘victim-y’ stories about women veterans, and there are much more positive and powerful stories. Linda had a vision to elevate women veteran’s voices in a different, unique and powerful way. 20:17

101. Staying Intentional To Prevent Burnout with Evan Freed
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
10/27/23 • 37 min
Intentional journeys and vacations allow you to experience the world around you and discover your truest self.
Evan Freed is a founder of Family Journey. Evan believes in intentional travel experiences as well as intentional communication and healthy relationships, which in turn allow a person to avoid burnout. He likens intentional communication with incomplete information while on vacation surrounded by a language different to our own, to communication within entrepreneurship.
The goal of an intentional vacation is to be changed, to take things which are experienced back home, in order to incorporate it into daily life. Taking time to rest is imperative for one’s wellbeing, however rest should just be rest on its own, not a precursor to working even harder.
Being and staying intentional is not an easy option in life, so give yourself some grace and create space to make the changes you need to.
Hear more from Evan at She Leads LIVE 2023, happening on December 1st in NYC.
Notes:
🧳 Evan is a founder of Family Journey: he creates transformational, intentional travel experiences for all different types of people. 02:54
🇨🇷 Journeys are about becoming part of what's happening around you and discovering your true colors. 05:52
👨👩👧👦 From intentional vacation, you can take experience and lessons back home: after these vacations, you don't have depression. 07:59
💆 When the company Evan worked in grew, he left because he didn't want to lead a money-focused life: you should rest for the sake of it, not to be able to work more. 11:04
🏡 Retreat is not a vacation: you should do things that will make your life better when you go home. 18:08
✅ Evan coaches parents, mostly mothers, through retreats with or without him: rightness is the way you love yourself and are honest with yourself - claim it to have healthy relationships and avoid burnout. 22:30
👉 Being intentional is significant but not easy: it's hard to look at our own lives because we're very comfortable with how society sets us off. 26:50
❤️ Men don't realize the mental load that women always have: Evan intentionally works on his communication with his wife. 30:13

28. The Unspoken Realty of Women NOT Helping Women
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
11/20/20 • 37 min
Notes
🔥 Adrienne boldly reached out to Antonia after reading her Swaay article about women who do not support other women. 1:03
🧱 Antonia is an Experience Collector. Her choices in life and career were centered around having incredible experiences and building something new. 2:46
📣 We need to talk about hypocrisy: Women are being disloyal to other women, but it’s not often spoken about. 9:07
😡 What to do when you experience a ‘mean girl from highschool’ comment? 10:54
☝️ Having systemic support and practicing diplomatic responses to inappropriate comments at work is essential. 14:52
🤯 The reactions to Antonia’s article were huge, but all reactions were sent in private messages, as this is still taboo. 16:58
🙈 Women focus on talking about men holding them down, but do not apply the same standard to other women. 21:06
😇 Concept of kindness and custodianship vs the concept of the power of a pronoun. 25:11
⚖️ These days leaders have to be able to adapt to new concepts: bias for action, and balance towards thoughtfulness. 28:07
👱♀️ Learn from the youth, open up your social circle and let people inspire you by who they are. 32:52

Unlocking Your Authentic Voice: Expert Tips from Jessica Doyle Mekkes
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
10/06/23 • 37 min
Your voice is a powerful tool that you can leverage for success. Jessica Doyle Mekkes is a renowned vocal coach who helps women find their powerful, authentic voices. Whether you are a public speaker, leading a meeting, or just want to be able to speak up confidently in a personal or professional setting, there are many ways we can learn to exercise and use our voice more effectively. Manage your stress with breath work and role-playing, and consider that even your clothing choices can have an impact on your ability to deliver a powerful message. Most sound equipment is designed for men, so advocate for yourself, be mindful of the equipment you will be using, and make sure that it is equalized and positioned for your needs. We are not spending enough time thinking about how our voices sound, but when we use them properly, they can (and will!) command the room!
Notes:
👄 Jessica is a vocal coach and the Head of Musical Theatre at East Carolina University, where she teaches voice and vocal pedagogy: the sound of power and authority are stereotypically associated with older white males. 03:21
🤐 We usually don't think about our voices until we need them, and they're not there. 06:48
🫁 If your voice is a car, your breath is the gas: the nerve endings that activate the fight or flight are at the top of the lungs, and the rest or digest ones are at the bottom. 09:47
⏺️ What you sound like in your head is different from what your audience hears: practice speaking through role play and recording yourself. 14:28
👠 The path is very circuitous: fail spectacularly while finding your direction. 18:16
👉 If you're privileged, acknowledge that you're coming from that place, but don’t brush off your hard work and achievements as luck. 21:34
🥤 A regular drinking straw can help you warm up your voice: steam is as good for the voice as the sauna for the body. 24:18
📗 Jessica is publishing "a bible for women on speaking up without trepidation": it's about physical and inner voice, and you can pre-order it right now! 29:34
🌬️ In her work, Jessica fights “Impost-Her” syndrome and shares tools that build brain pathways and help your vocal muscles. 34:26

The Power of Authenticity: Finding Success from Brazil to Hollywood with Journalist Jana Nagase
The She Leads Podcast: Real Conversations with Women Entrepreneurs
06/07/24 • 32 min
Don’t be ashamed of your authenticity.
Jana N. Nagase is a film critic, columnist, and podcaster originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. She is a member of the Critics Choice Association & Film Independent, and Brazilian International Press Association.
Since 2012 she has supported the community with the columns she writes for Gazeta News, the biggest Brazilian newspaper in the US based in Florida. This year, her YouTube channel “Jana on Camera” celebrates its 10th anniversary. Jana on Camera provides behind-the-scenes interviews with artists from big studios, independent studios, and Latino newcomers in the entertainment industry.
Jana shares her success and how she overcame many of the hardships that immigrant women face in trying to navigate the entertainment industry. She reveals her process of securing red carpet interviews from celebrities and addresses the level of preparation that’s required.
Jana created a business from what she loves doing the most, despite many people telling her she didn’t have the right ‘look’ for this field of work. Naysayers can say what they want, but this tough lady proves that love, authenticity, and following the principles of good journalism can truly make miracles happen.
The most important thing is to trust yourself and not let anybody else tell you who you are! Jana’s advice is to hold on to who you are in your heart and don’t change your essence or your accent - for anyone!!
Notes
🇧🇷 Jana is a Brazilian immigrant: a broadcast communication graduate who transferred to the movie, entertainment, and TV. 03:06
⭐ Independent productions have more creative solutions. 04:56
🗞️ The Gazeta News is the biggest Brazilian newspaper in the USA: the Brazilian community is big and Jana is supporting it by writing columns for the last 12 years. 06:14
📺 Jana’s YouTube channel is about supporting and interviewing industry professionals like actors, directors, and producers from streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+. 08:33
🎤 How to get interviews from celebrities: talking with movie and theater professionals has some rules. 12:14
🤓 Preparing for the interview for series and movies. 14:33
😇 YouTube channel as business and all its challenges: Jana is proud of herself and her accomplishments, even though she never dreamed this life could happen to her. 18:06
