Podcaster Q&A

Tell us about yourself – what is your background?

I always had a love for history and media, and from the earliest days wanted to combine both once I understood that might be a career opportunity. I made documentaries in high school then on to film school while getting a dual degree with history. I worked for the History Channel documentaries for several years and when possible gravitated to jobs that allowed me to use my research and history knowledge whenever and however possible.

Why did you get into podcasting?

I was trying to get a tv show off the ground for several years, and people kept mentioning podcasts to me because they were curious about my tastes. During one temp job, I started listening to podcasts to keep my brain from turning to mush with a mundane repetitive task. I got inspired to turn my tv series idea into a podcast so that I could tell my stories.

How did the idea for the show come about?

Two ways, first in 2013 during a lull and transition in employment I began developing history ideas to sell as film or tv series when I stumbled across a wealthy enclave Newport, R.I. gossip column the summer before the 1929 Crash. When I fleshed out the stories, I discovered that several heiresses were in the area and at the age around when I had visited Newport decades earlier. I uncovered some other parallels and knew I had a story to tell.

What do you hope listeners take from the show?

Money doesn't solve all your problems and can in fact cause more. However what is really important is that you develop resilience for yourself and compassion for others. And overall, the biggest wealth comes from good relationships. No amount of money can ever replace that.

What's been the biggest challenge for you?

Juggling all the duties of being a one person creator. I struggle most with social media as I am a very late adopter to the medium and haven't really found my groove there. Technical issues arise, and when one is solved another pops up in its place. However I am so excited to get these stories out, I obsessively focus forward.

How can your listeners support your show?

They are already doing a lot by listening. That's so much appreciated. If they have anything to share, then please reach out on social media. I love to hear how they relate to the subjects, topics, and people mentioned. It is so interesting to see how much our world can be a smaller place.

Any future plans that you'd like to share?

Trying to develop a few more projects, but those are months down the line until I get past a current technical issue that is bogging down production.

Anything else you'd like to share?

I really enjoy podcasting. It has opened up for me the ability to get my stories out there without any additional gatekeepers. My growth is slow but has been steady, and I will hopefully have a great body of work in the long run. My goal is to keep doing this, as I have accumulated too many stories that need to be told. The podcasting community is very warm and accepting, and so great for people like the Goodpods helping us find and be found.
