Navigating Chronic Illness & Podcasting with Cathy Beederman

In this episode of Resilient with Jen Chambers, I sit down with Cathy Beederman, host of That Chronic Thing podcast, to talk about the realities of living with chronic illness. I start you right in the middle of our conversation so you feel like you're right on our Zoom call. We start talking about our pets (her senior dog is the cutest) and then discuss everything from mobility aids and energy management to the unique challenges of dating while disabled. Cathy shares her journey into podcasting, how she builds community on social media, and the importance of finding creative outlets while managing health.

We also chat about our favorite books, the joys of audiobooks, and the delicate balance between pushing through and prioritizing rest. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to navigate life and creativity with chronic illness, this is an episode you won’t want to miss!

Join us for this heartfelt and honest conversation—and stay tuned for Part Two!

Rest, Resilience & Resthinking Productivity: A Deep Dive with Cathy Beederman (Part 2)

In this continuation of my conversation with Cathy Beederman, we explore the creative ways she tracks her chronic illness symptoms, the importance of community, and the role of social media in connection and support. Cathy shares her experiences using health-tracking apps like Visible and Guava, the challenges of data collection, and how small adaptations—like voice dictation—help her stay engaged with her health. We also discuss the evolution of online communities, the importance of joy in daily life, and how we each navigate living with chronic illness. One of the things I really took away from this conversation is that as people who are chronically ill, we have to rethink what our lives look like when not measured by a productivity metric. Tune in for a heartfelt and insightful discussion on resilience, adaptation, and finding meaning in the digital age.

Transcript

Cathy: So what had happened was I, I've been doing a lot of interviews in,
December and in January. Also there will be barking. I'm so sorry. You'll just have to cut that out.
Jen: well, I was going to tell you there will be cats because I have five cats and they like to, I know everybody says that.
I have two cats and a dog, so I'm, I'm not far behind there.
Okay, good. You know, there's five people in my family, so there's one per cat. I feel like that's a decent ratio.
