Your Mom™

Lisa McCaffrey, Ashley Adamson

Ashley Adamson and Lisa McCaffrey return for Season 2 of Your MomTM, a podcast that celebrates the messy, magical, maddening experience of motherhood—and the women behind the world's most impressive humans. Join us as we sit down with the moms of world-class athletes and high-achievers to hear personal stories of parenting that are equal parts extraordinary and exactly like your last Tuesday. In Season 1, we realized something powerful: when moms are given the space to share their own stories—not just their kids'—something shifts. So this year, we're expanding the lens. We're digging deeper into the power of storytelling itself—how it shapes identity, creates connection, and helps us make sense of this wild ride. To help us do that, we’ve added two new voices to the pod: Chantal Below and Betsy Bloom—sharp, soulful storytellers who aren’t afraid to go there. We’re so grateful you’re here. Drop us a line, a rant, or a rave at [email protected]. We’re listening.

As usual, you guys really brought it: topics include Christian’s NFL Madden 25 cover (which Lisa definitely did not bet on in Vegas), what Ashley will most miss from her Pac-12 travels, punctuation etiquette; and of course, all things *wedding*, from Lisa’s dress drama to her planned Dirty Dancing choreography with Greg Van Roten. Plus, Lisa finally embraced her inner-influencer and revealed the secret to her glowy skin: Jones Road Miracle Balm; turns out, Ashley is also a devoted fan. Once again we’re open to sponsorships, collabs, free samples, etc...

Thanks, as always, for listening and laughing with us this season. It’s not goodbye, it’s just see you at Your Mom's post-wedding debrief.

Lisa's unending journey for healthy living recently led her to discover Fountain Life, a company dedicated to revolutionizing the healthcare system in order to help people live longer and improve disease detection.

It's a lofty mission and one that our guest, Fountain Life's Chief Medical and Science Officer Dr. Helen Messier, says is fundamental to the future of medicine.

According to the American Cancer Society about 70% of all cancer deaths come from cancers for which there are currently no proven screening tests. So imagine if we could consistently find cancer at stage zero when it's most easily cured? Fountain Life claims their data-driven approach enables them to find cancer, cardiac, metabolic, and neurodegenerative disease early, before they can cause harm.

Dr. Messier received a Bachelor of Science and a PhD in Molecular Immunology from the University of Alberta. She completed post-doctoral studies at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology in San Diego, CA and received her MD from the University of Calgary. She’s board certified in family medicine. In addition to leading the company’s clinical and scientific programs, Dr. Messier will establish Fountain Life University to train Fountain Life certified practitioners and lead the effort to gain insights and publish findings from Fountain Life’s vast amount of data. In addition to being related to the Hall of Fame hockey player Mark Messier, she found out on this episode that she's about to be related to the McCaffreys. Listen on for an informative conversation about a critical topic, which ends with a fun reveal.

Your Mom's Super Bowl bonus week coverage rolls on with a two-for-one special, featuring two of the most special people we know.

Solomon Thomas and his mom Martha joined the set in Phoenix before hitting the red carpet for the NFL Honors awards ceremony last month. Solomon was the 2022 New York Jets' nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and - like any man of the year would - he invited his mom to be his plus one.

Solomon played football with Lisa's son Christian at Stanford, and you can tell by some of the stories that start flying just how many memories these two families have shared.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is one of the league's most prestigious honors, recognizing an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on the field. Solly may not have won that award this year, but he's officially Your Mom's NFL Man of the Year and we think that's the vote that really matters anyways.

To learn more about the critical work Solomon and his family are doing to honor his late sister Ella, please go to their website: https://thedefensiveline.org/. And congrats again to Solomon, the inaugural Your Mom NFL Man of the Year!

Ryan Leaf was an All-American quarterback at Washington State University. He was the No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 1998. A few years later, he was known as the No. 1 overall NFL Draft bust.
Much has been written about the small town, big-armed quarterback from Montana who went from living out his dream to enduring life in prison. Today, we hear a uniquely intimate perspective on that journey, as Ryan's mom joins the show.

Marcia Leaf tells Ashley and Lisa about some of the joyful moments, like the time she crowd-surfed at one of Ryan's games. She also opens up about some of her most painful memories and regrets, including being in denial as Ryan struggled with drug addiction.

Today, Ryan advocates for those struggling with mental and behavioral health issues. He’s found purpose in his career as a college football analyst and - more importantly - in his role as a father.

Come listen to this emotional journey like you've never heard it before. Through the eyes of Ryan's mom.

The day after the Super Bowl, Chantal Below’s son was so devastated by the 49ers' loss that he requested to stay home from school. Chantal, who admittedly doesn’t care much about sports, was mystified by his utter desolation. This got us thinking: what is it about team sports that inspires such extreme emotions? Where’s the line between loyal fan and zealous fanatic?

In an attempt to answer these questions, we dive into the deep end of fan psychology: the intersection of sports and religion, the gender dynamics of emotional repression, and the toxicity of sideline critics. We question why certain “fans” spew negative comments on social media after a tough loss and others set cars on fire after a momentous victory.

We also celebrate the inspiring side of fandom: the community it creates, the resilience it engenders, and the respect it promotes for the players putting their bodies and souls on the line. As a lifelong sports enthusiast, Ashley shares how watching football kept her connected to her dad during a tough time in her life. As a mom and wife of avid athletes, Chantal acknowledges the magic in the madness of youth sports. And, as a longtime Buffalo Bills fan, our executive producer Betsy Bloom offers an ode to Bills mafia’s enduring loyalty even in the most trying times

So, whether your mental health hinges on a win or you watch sports for the snacks, we hope you’re a fan of this episode. Stay tuned next week for our SuperBowl recap with Lisa, who undeniably earned the right to skip school the next day.

About Chantal Below:

Chantal moved from the US to England in third grade. As an expat, she promptly began saying biscuit instead of cookie and spelling color with a ‘u’ in order to fit in. She never developed a love of cricket, but did develop a fascination with humanity, unconsciously examining how different cultures and beliefs expand or limit our choices.

After graduating from Georgetown University, she started her career as a 4th grade teacher with Teach For America, hoping to expand choices for too-often marginalized children in low-income schools. She loved the energy of the kids and the vibrancy of the community, but no one really wanted her teaching long division.

Since then, she’s been exploring the many dimensions of the human condition while avoiding math. She worked for years in the education non-profit world leading teams and developing leadership development programs. Then, she ventured out on her own and started Redcliff Coaching, Inc. She also attempts to parent three kids who are curious, compassionate, hysterical, and only vaguely pay attention to her advice. She lives in Oakland, CA.

Your Mom™ - Ep. 57: Tis’ the season for…mixed emotions
play

12/23/23 • 47 min

Tis’ the season for...mixed emotions

We’re trying to be present, while rushing to buy all the presents.

We’re treasuring moments of togetherness, while wishing for just.one.minute of alone time.

And we’re looking forward to a new year, while reflecting on the regrets of the past.

In today’s episode Ashley Adamson and Chantal Below delve into the pangs of regret and sadness that tend to surface this time of year. Rather than packing them away with the ugly ornaments, Chantal encourages us to hold space for uncomfortable feelings: “We have a tendency to lean into joy and skim over the negative emotions: resentment, regret, sadness, shame, embarrassment. And yet they live in us if we don’t let them live through us.”

Chantal’s superpower lies in her ability to reframe narratives that don’t serve us. In this instance, she encourages us to consider the upside of regret. How might regret be an opportunity for reflection? How might we grant compassion to our former selves, who were often doing the best they could with the decisions they had?

Amidst the holiday hustle and bustle, take 45 minutes for yourself to listen to this inspiring conversation. You won’t regret it.

If you’re interested in delving deeper, here are the awesome resources we mentioned in the episode:

Wishing you a peaceful, bustling, joyful, contemplative, frivolous, and fulfilling holiday season!

Pro tip: it’s not too late to buy your mom something other than a robe.

Our first guest for season two is YourMomTM’s biggest fan: Kate Rooney, a sports anchor for KRON4 in San Francisco and mom of two adorable kiddos: Harlow and Brady.

Kate and Ashley forged a tight bond over a decade ago during the launch of the Pac-12 Network. While Kate’s sports broadcasting career might have begun because of a hiring mix-up (full story on the pod), she’s proven that she’s a formidable talent in the field. As the host of the weekly 49ers show, “The Red and Gold Zone,” she frequently interviews Christian and was able to confirm Lisa’s allegation that he is, in fact, “a huge nerd.”

Brimming with humor and heart, our conversation with Kate touches on a wide range of topics, from the fellowship of women in the sports industry to breast-pumping in the Niners’ media room to the best karaoke song for any occasion. Come for the football scoop and stay for Kate’s Bing Crosby inspired rendition of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

Sarah Thompson lives every moment on high alert. Such is the reality of a parent raising a child with epilepsy. Her son Bryson was diagnosed as a drug-resistant epileptic six years ago, and despite suffering near daily seizures, his diagnosis has not defined him.

During National Epilepsy Awareness Month, Sarah joins the show to discuss the mental and physical toll epilepsy takes on a family and what she wishes everyone knew about the brain disorder that impacts over 3 million people in the United States. Ashley shares her personal experience with epilepsy and why she felt connected to the Thompson family from the moment she met Sarah.

In addition to raising Bryson and his three siblings, Sarah is also a second mom to an entire college football team. The wife of the Cal running backs coach, and the daughter of an NFL star offensive lineman, Sarah uncovers she and Lisa share many common threads.
