Yesteryear Ballyhoo Revue
This week, on a very special GIGANTIC SIZED episode of the Ballyhoo that may go on for years, Zach is joined by return guests Tyler and "Andrew" (Pop Culture Brews) to shoot elephants in the Ballyhoo's pajamas... how they got in our pajamas, we dont know. That's right folks, the topic of the day will be THE MARX BROTHERS as the boys dive deep into their first Five Films with Paramount Pictures. Settle in for the long haul that may go on for years as they find amazement in the origins of cinemas legend comedy foursome, giggle in delight at their favorite jokes, dispel a few myths and rumors about the team and the films, reckon with outdated material and how to process it when watching comedy of the past, and hold a spotlight onto the many tangible and emotional ways the Marx Brothers have left their imprint on cinema and comedy at large. And while the boys cannot top the lines from any of the brothers, they do find hilarity at the convenience of the brothers names, get baffled by the lyrics of Monkey Doodle Do, and so much more. PLUS: We make the case for one Herbert "Zeppo" Marx. Films Discussed: The Cocoanuts (1929) Animal Crackers (1930) Monkey Business (1931) Horse Feathers (1932) Duck Soup (1933) Films Not Discussed: Humour Risk... cause we cant see it. ---- For more of Tyler and "Andrew", listen to them regularly on the astounding podcast, POP CULTURE BREWS: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pop-culture-brews/id1477714941 https://www.ageofradio.org/popculturebrews/ And follow them on Social Media Twitter: @popculturebrews Instagram: @popculturebrews Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/popculturebrews/

Ep. 46: ‘The Thing From Another World (1951)’ or ‘Poptimism in Frozen Hell’

The Bally-BOO! concludes a month of terror with a trip to the wintry north where some THING has been found in the ice. Zach is joined as this expedition by returning guests Anthony Cubba and Brent Ballard (Poptimistic) where they shall all encounter the terror from beyond the stars found in 1951's THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD! Gather your flame throwers and be on guard as the boys travail the context surrounding the terrifying stories surrounding on John W. Campbell, puzzle over how Hawks and his team refashioned the novella into something far different from its source, gaze in awe of the special effects courtesy of Linwood Dunn, marvel at the dangerous and lasting stunt work in the picture, glance over the evidence of the pictures true authorship, and discover the many wondrous THINGS the film has carried on into films to this day. But there is more than just fear in this frozen hell, there are also laughs to keep the bodies warm and alert. Giggle along as the guys analyze the films push against scientists, connect the film to the Friday the 13th series, and pitch a series of GE ads fit for 50's world. ------ Be sure to check out Anthony and Brent on POPTIMISTIC, now available wherever you get your podcasts Website: linktr.ee/poptimistic Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/poptimistic/id1535746897
