39. Don't Bank on the Bomb - Ethical Money Audit
As you will know there are some subjects that really get us fired up, and one of Julie’s red buttons is weapons. Now we often talk about having your money aligned with your values, and while Julie has her pensions and investments aligned with her values, she asked Catherine what else could she be doing to ensure her money wasn’t inadvertently supporting war and weapons.
Enter Catherine’s ethical money audit.
Catherine’s research showed us that there are 25 companies involved in creating nuclear weapons. Which made Julie’s audit a little easier to do. But Catherine has the skills and experience to help anyone who wants to fine tune the spending and money to reflect their values.
Catherine’s audit included:
- Banks – we’ve got two green banks, and two red banks
- Mortgage – we found that a lack of transparency by some banks makes it difficult to truly understand what they do with our money. Julie will be letting her mortgage broker know to avoid weapons next time she’s remortgaging.
- Insurers – some of the big providers are insuring the 25 companies. But wishy washy ESG policies aren’t helping
About half way through the audit, Catherine must give a green status to a company it’s fair to say she is not aligned with. Can you guess who it is?
We also touch briefly on investments. While we are big fans of keeping investing simple, which is kind of code for passive investing, Catherine highlights why you might want to rethink this approach if you have values like Julie.
App of the week – Sprive for clearing your mortgage early. We love how simple this app is and the control it gives you.
