WNET UP Next

n the final of a trio of episodes devoted to the THIRTEEN Celebrates the Summer of ’69, WNET Up Next puts the spotlight on the 50th Anniversary of the iconic Woodstock Music Festival.

Community Engagement’s Jasmine Wilson takes us behind the scenes of THIRTEEN’s Summer of ’69 project and outlines the station-wide collaboration that made it all happen. She and host Tom Stewart set the stage for the recollections of eight tri-state area residents, who can each honestly say, “I was at Woodstock.” Included is musician Ira Stone, who played onstage on Woodstock’s opening night.

WNET Up Next Reaches for the Moon!

WNET Up Next continues its collaboration with Community Engagement and THIRTEEN Celebrates Summer of ’69 initiative, which is being featured on-air, online and in the community. This month, the podcast dives into the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission and the first moon walk.

WNET’s Senior Director of Community Engagement Chris Czajka reflects on the importance of the moon landing and PBS’s Summer of Space program lineup. In addition, we hear the stories from several New Yorkers about Apollo 11: Mike Massimino, a NASA astronaut, who at age seven watched the moon landing with his family on Long Island; Great Performances Executive Producer David Horn, whose father worked for NASA; NYU Astronomy Professor Gereceida Jones, who has had a life-long passion for the “night sky;” and Producer Mike Kostel, who attended the ticker tape parade in New York for the returning Apollo 11 heroes. The interviews were conducted by WNET’s Katie Young.

Next month the series will conclude with a look back at the iconic Woodstock Music Festival.

WNET Up Next Visits the World of Multiplatform Initiatives

This month, WNET Up Next features Executive Producer/Project Director Eugenia Harvey and Producer Maya Navon to learn more about the Multiplatform Initiatives unit. In addition to producing content for Chasing the Dream, an initiative on income inequality, poverty and opportunity, the unit also publishes content for Peril and Promise: The Challenge of Climate Change, reporting the human stories of climate change and its potential solutions.

With climate change becoming an ever-more important issue and with recent events like the Global Climate Strike and the United Nations sessions on global warming, Peril and Promise has been at the forefront of reporting fact-based journalism across all platforms of public media.

Right now the team is partnering with Climate Nexus on the five-part digital series Freedom to Breathe, which follows the route of 1961’s Freedom Riders to examine how climate change is affecting those areas.
