White Line Podcast - EP 7.5: Men's Health Week

EP 7.5: Men's Health Week

White Line Podcast

play

06/17/21 • 41 min

Men's Health Week is an annual event in mid-June that presents a platform to recognise and discuss key issues relating to the outcomes of males and their health.
We saw this as a timely opportunity to discuss our experiences and learnings around this topic.
No planning. No structure. No preparation. Just hit record and get talking.
The general takeaway from this conversation was the importance of transforming physical and mental health from the elephant in the room to something that is comfortable to discuss and address.
We hope that you can find this a valuable and relatable listen.

White Line Podcast - EP 18: Mitch Ryan

EP 18: Mitch Ryan

White Line Podcast

play

10/19/22 • 90 min

On this episode, we are joined by an amazing human with an amazing story, great friend of the podcast, Mitch Ryan.

On October 12, 2002, Mitch and his Southport Sharks teammates were drinking in the Sari Club in Kuta, Bali, when a van laden with explosives, detonated just metres away from them.

Ryan, Cas and myself probably didn’t have a huge understanding of the Bali Bombings or the consequences it had on Australia for many, many years to follow. We were only 6 or 7 at the time so were certainly a bit ignorant of what actually happened.

Mitch disputes the fact that he’s a victim, pledging to take gratitude out of everything he can considering others in his vicinity weren’t so fortunate.

If this wasn’t already a bad enough hand to be dealt, Mitch lost his older brother, mentor and best mate in October 2020 to a freak accident while overseas. A lot of this podcast’s listeners would have known the great Jake Ryan in some capacity, and Mitch pays a beautiful homage to his brother.

Mitch is now in the business development and commercial side of proceedings at the Brisbane Lions, giving us an insight into how things work up at the Gabba.

He’s the father to Ted, with another one well on the way. As a matter of fact, his better half Sherry is due on November 12, but there’s a feeling the baby might be coming earlier, so during this recording Mitch was very aware of any phone notifications he received.

The best way to summarise this bloke, is that he’s a battler, who loves his family and mates, and would put anyone’s interests in front of his own. A truly great man.

We hope you enjoy the listen.

A heads up as well, there is some pretty heavy stuff discussed at times, and if anything has been triggering for you, there are some fantastic resources in the show notes. Also, a language warning for the next 90 minutes.

On this episode, we welcome the Director of Physical Education at Benowa State High School, Ian Hutchison.
Hutch, as we know him, has been in the role for the best part of a decade, having a significant influence on students and staff alike, and everything sport related that goes on at Benowa High.
Beyond his work as an educator, Hutch has competed in five Ironman triathlons, played soccer for the Brisbane Strikers in the NSL, and is a keen surfer.
Perhaps the most fascinating part of the conversation for us though, was his insight into coaching and personal development. Volleyball, Rugby Union, Soccer, Netball, Hockey. You name it, Hutch has probably coached it. Ask anyone who's been coached by the great man, and they'll you that he's right at the top end of the best coaches they've ever played under.
This was an awesome chat, and something that Cas, Ryan and myself were bloody privileged to be a part of.

Adrian Pudlyk has been in the sports podiatry game since 2003, and is now the Director of the Foot and Balance Centre in Tugun, on the southern end of the Gold Coast. If there's one word to summarise this guy, it would undoubtedly be 'community'. Adrian has an infectious passion in showing people from all walks of life, how to care for their feet, body and mind. We discuss the different areas of podiatry that he's worked in, being an elite runner in his earlier years, and his mental health struggles that he faced when working with severely impaired patients in London. On top of all of this, Adrian's community work sees him involved with organisations such as MindPak, Sana, Men's Medicine and Run For Your Life. White Line Podcast - EP 12: Kade Kolodjashnij

10/28/21 • 94 min

On episode 12, we catch up with former Gold Coast Sun and Melbourne Demon, Kade Kolodjashnij.
Heralded by many as one of the most classy youngsters in the AFL, Kade started his career with a bang, playing 59 games across his first 3 years in the league.

However, misfortunes through the form of concussion soon restrained his development in the AFL. In less than a three-year period leading up to his forced retirement, Kade was concussed 15 times in football incidents. Being such a current issue, it was great to have Kade share his story on the depths of concussion and head knocks.

Now retired, Kade probably has more on his plate than he did when in the AFL. He is the co-owner of the best mozzie repellent business going around, Settlers Insect Repellent, is a franchisee of Strong Pilates Studio in Southport and Geelong, and is also trying to complete a commerce degree somewhere in the midst of all that.

Getting together with Kade was a long time in the works. We loved having him in with us. He has an incredible story. It is a fascinating listen.
