"What's Good?" W/ Charlie Taylor - Ep.254 - Cruise Ships & Killers Of The Flower Moon
play

11/23/23 • 64 min

In a week where:

  1. Sean Combs settles a civil case within 24 hours of being accused of rape and severe physical abuse by former girlfriend Cassie.
  2. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is fired only to be then hired by Microsoft.
  3. Kool & The Gang drummer George "Funky" Brown dies at 74.
  4. Far-Right libertarian Javier Milei wins Argentinian Presidential election.
  5. Happy 5th birthday "What's Good?"!

In Environment: (5:35) I was never into the idea of cruise ships when I was younger for a myriad of reasons, but with increasing evidence that cruise ships are THE worst when it comes to the environment - including this story about them not using long-established power sources - it's clear they got to go.

In Tech: (20:57) With Twitter getting worse by the day, it's beginning to show that there's a widening gap in the Social Media/News landscape. So what are the ramifications of a deteriorating news landscape?

In Politics: (37:53) Of all the reasons to hate Politics these days, one huge reason is the lack of empathy and how it only comes into play when it suits politicians.

Lastly, in Film: (49:12) I briefly talked about "Killers of the Flower Moon" a few episodes ago and the likes of Scorsese have since talked about the main issue with the film: A non-Osage, telling an Osage story. So am I being extra?

In Sports: (11:44) The European Championships end the six-week barrage of major champs in Athletics circles, the last word being one that has been echoed in recent years: female athletes & menstruation.

In Politics: (24:34) There are many people that I pray to have a downfall; one is Michael Gove who has come out of frontbench politics "clean" but don't get it twisted, his legacy should be noted as unashamedly crap.

In the first of two Society segment: (36:15) We've gassed the General Secretary of the RMT Mick Lynch before, and the longer the strike summer goes, the more we get to know the defacto face of the strike summer.

Lastly, in the 2nd Society segment: (52:10) Skin whitening is a billion dollar industry that preys on black people around the world; but now, those products are becoming lethal and giving even more irreparable damage.

In a week where:

  1. Jussie Smollett pleaded innocent to 16 felony charges.
  2. An Ethiopian Airlines flight crashes, killing nearly 200 people
  3. Dave dropped "PSYCHODRAMA" & got me in my feelings.

We begin the show with Film/TV. (3:39) Talking about Will Smith and his illogical casting as Richard Williams in a Biopic about Serena & Venus' father. The news has brought up the conversation of Colourism and rightly so.

For the Sports segment, (15:15) F1 IS BACK. Ya boy is hyped so I decided to do a few predictions ahead of the first weekend. Who will win the first race? Who will be the best out of the four newcomers? Who is the best duo on paper?! And of course, who will win the Drivers' & Constructors' World Championships?

For the Music segment, (31:34) I wanted to talk about some words I read from lyricist Lupe Fiasco, talking about the news that radio stations across the world are taking Michael Jackson songs off the airwaves in the aftermath of the "Leaving Neverland" documentary. I reaffirm my opinions on MJ, R Kelly, the concept of "cancelling" and trying to put the "Art vs The Artist" conversation to bed.

For the Life segment, (44:33) I wanted to talk about knife crime. Statistics show that it's not just a "city" or "urban" issue. It's a problem everywhere, it's a National issue, a National Emergency. But I feel like it'll fall on deaf ears because politicians are focused on their careers and "The Exit".

  2. The teenager who tried to kill a six-year-old at Tate Modern is jailed for 15 years.
  3. In a one-to-one with Kerry Washington, Sandra Oh says the UK TV industry is behind in diversity.
  4. The city of Leicester goes into its own lockdown.

In Film/TV: (8:52) Actor & Writer Daniel Lawrence Taylor delivers a great piece on how talk is cheap when it comes to the UK Television industry and how as a whole, need to fix up as it pertains to diversity.

In Sports: (19:42) The Queen of Sprint, Dina Asher-Smith, comes through with a thoughtful column on how she's experienced racism and how education is the key to long-term progress.

In Life: (35:11) Speaking of education! Somebody is already making moves to create a decolonised black University and I for one am gassed about this prospect.

Lastly, in Music: (51:27) 6ix9ine & Nicki Minaj went No.1 with their collaborative effort "TROLLZ", which is another glaring example of how the music industry can't help but shamelessly money grab and inadvertently kill the essence of Hip-Hop in the process.

  6. A&E Departments in England had their worst December performance on record
  7. Ocean temperatures hit a record high.
  8. Billie Eilish will be the performer for the new Bond title track "No Time To Die".

In the 1st Film/TV segment: (9:25) The Oscar nominations have arrived and they are not good. Very saturated and of course, *super* white.

In the 2nd Film/TV segment: (27:53) The BAFTAs are now the WAFTAs apparently! Somehow, they did worse on average than the Oscars and that's an amazing feat in itself.

In Music: (45:25) The BRIT Awards continue to be extremely disappointing. Whilst they gave Dave the equal most nominations, they seem to forget that women make music too!

Lastly, in Life: (56:41) I have always been a proponent of willing to be wrong. Turns out there is a term for it! Welcome to the world of Intellectual Humility.

In the second interview of three, I catch up with a modern-day legend of Athletics. Multiple Olympic Gold Medallist & World Record holder Tianna Bartoletta.

I interviewed her over two years ago and since then, Tianna has made a concerted effort to elevate in life as well as a professional athlete. Becoming a practitioner of Yoga, writing a memoir and giving back to the athletes of the future.

The first paragraph of platitudes is what people will know off the bat, but it's her humility & passion for growth that makes her inspirational in more ways than one. Regardless if you follow Athletics or not, there's plenty of gems to take here.
