They Say It's Your Birthday
What Manners Most With Mister Manners
04/27/20 • 23 min
As citizens of the world sit out life in various stages of quarantine, many of us are missing birthdays, anniversaries, proms, bar mitzvahs and more. We're also prevented from paying our respects to anyone in our lives who passes away. And yet, in such unsettling times, we are adapting, coming up with new ways to mark milestones...helped in large part by technology, but also through sheer force of will and resourcefulness.
One such creative type is producer Sally Horchow. Approaching her fiftieth birthday, and before the pandemic, Sally envisioned having a huge bash with friends from near and far. She wound up getting her wish--albeit in a very different fashion from what she originally imagined.
Delight in Sally's story and draw new inspiration for ways to make sure this year's commemorations are ones to remember--not for how sullen they were but for how unique and meaningful they turned out to be.
If you've recently had a special occasion celebration that was particularly meaningful, please drop us a line at [email protected]. We'll be sharing listeners' stories in an upcoming episode of the podcast. And if you have questions for Thomas or suggestions for future segments, please drop him a line on @MisterManners on Twitter or Instagram or via his website, at www.mister-manners.com/contact

Taking a Page from History
What Manners Most With Mister Manners
05/05/20 • 25 min
In conversation with Yale University professor Frank Snowden, Mister Manners explores the fascinating details of past epidemics and how various societies handled them. Particularly during the Bubonic plague of the Middle Ages and the Spanish flu of the early 20th century, how did our culture change following each pandemic? Using the past as a guide, what lasting cultural differences can we anticipate after the scourge of COVID-19 begins to abate?
Dr. Snowden, author of the brand-new book "Epidemics and Society: From the Black Plague to the Present," provides these insights and more as we continue our journey to discover What Manners Most during this time of the Coronavirus pandemic.

What Manners Most With Mister Manners
06/01/20 • 22 min
In this episode of What Manners Most, Thomas speaks with longtime Hollywood entertainment reporter Jeanne Wolf. The two discuss the employment outlook for the innumerable men and women who work behind the scenes in the film industry; which celebrities have risen to the challenge of helping their community; the role of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson in helping calm some fears about the coronavirus; what theater-going will look like as their doors begin to open again; and which films are on Jeanne's must-see list when they do.
You'll love her insights—and her sense of humor—as she reflects on all with her characteristic keen insights and upbeat attitude. Not to be missed: Her impression of actress Joan Collins as the pandemic was setting in over Los Angeles.

Taking Your Questions on Pandemic Politeness
What Manners Most With Mister Manners
05/18/20 • 20 min
When 80s rock icons The Police sang "Don't Stand So Close To Me," they weren't speaking about food shopping in the age of social distancing--but they may as well have been. In the past few weeks, as the nation simultaneously seeks to comply with shelter in place while planning a return to normalcy, etiquette and politeness are being put to the ultimate test.
In this episode, we take your questions on scenarios that are all-too-common across the country during this time of pandemic response. Have a listen, let us know what you think, and if you have questions for Mister Manners to address, please send them to [email protected].

How To Look Fantastic on Video Calls
What Manners Most With Mister Manners
05/12/20 • 28 min
With more and more of us spending our days staring down a webcam on our laptops or on our phones, a great divide is coming into view: those who understand how to look their best on a video call and those who do not. Although this may seem a trivial matter, given that we make lasting impressions within the first seven seconds of a meeting, it's essential that we bring our best selves to virtual interactions. From the lighting you choose to the position of the camera, learn industry tips from veteran photographer Asa Mathat. You will see an immediate difference in the quality of your webcam video--and so will your colleagues, clients, family and friends. Give his DIY techniques a try, and send your before and after photos to [email protected] to be featured in our social media.

Teen Spirit at Its Best
What Manners Most With Mister Manners
06/16/20 • 36 min
As society reeled during the days and weeks after the horrific killing of George Floyd, residents of cities and towns everywhere came together in solidarity. After months of staying off the streets due to the pandemic, the citizenry headed out to the streets--for a breath of fresh air, yes, but also seeking a fresh start. Seeking change. Seeking something better than the current normal.
Among those called to do more was high school class of 2020 graduate Jalen Thompson, a young man from O'Fallon, Missouri. Jalen and his friends watched the nationwide rallies with increasing interest before ultimately planning one of their own. Although community support was iffy at first, the numbers the gathering attracted surpassed all predictions. In a show of solidarity, the local police chief marched arm-in-arm with Jalen and his friends, photos of which were shown around the world.
If ever you doubted the power of a small group of teenagers to use their smarts and energy for a higher purpose, this interview with Jalen proves it for certain.
