You may have noticed that we've been digging BattleTech around here. Between Rob Zacny's review earlier today and last Friday's livestream, giant robots have very clearly been very much on our minds. You'll be able to hear more of my thoughts on the game on Friday's episode of Waypoint Radio, which features Rob Zacny and I doing a huge deep dive into the game. Suffice to say, I love it.

Which is why I jumped at the chance to chat with the game's composer, Jon Everist, and to exclusively feature the above behind-the-scenes look at his process for composing and recording the game's incredible score. In the past, the games of the BattleTech universe (titles like MechAssault and MechWarrior 2) relied on wailing metal guitars to sell a the fantasy of the mech piloting. But in BattleTech, Everist offers a breadth of musical language to communicate a sense of triumph, hardship, and adventure. The game sounds sparse in some moments, with analog synths and distorted strings providing nearly-ambient backing to your life as a mercenary. And in other moments, when the galactic politicking comes to a hard point, the orchestra swells to support the weight of the moment.

When you're done listening, go read Rob's review right here, check out our exclusive behind-the-scenes video here, and check out the soundtrack over at Jon Everist's Bandcamp or on Spotify.

Waypoint Radio - Episode 132: Fiver Bro and Yakuza Dads
play

02/05/18 • 51 min

In today's episode of Waypoint Radio, Danika, Austin, Patrick and Danielle discuss Superbowl antics, Monster Hunter, and the excellent pixellated platformers we're playing—including Celeste and Dandara, a Metroid-y Soulslike—before shifting over to Yakuza chat. There will be dads, and especially dads in white pants.

The creators behind Waypoint favorite XCOM are turning their tactics expertise towards the Marvel universe—except now, it’s got cards. Of course, we jumped at the chance to check out the game early and interview game director Jake Solomon. Join Patrick and Rob as they interview Jake and get a (surprisingly honest!) answer to why XCOM + superheroes didn’t work, and discuss everything from making the move to card mechanics, to why of all the storylines and comic events Marvel has done, they chose the obscure “Midnight Sons.”

Waypoint Radio - Episode 224: Smells Like Sea Spirit

Austin returns to the podcast after a few weeks of thinking about mechs, and finding rest and relaxation by staying up until the wee hours of the morning while—well, thinking about mechs. He’s joined by Patrick, Cado, Rob, and Natalie to revisit Kingdom Hearts III as everyone nears the ending (no spoilers!), while also touching on Daemon X Machina, Betrayal Legacy, Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee, the medical world’s recent decision to inflate Patrick’s stomach, and the THQ Nordic/8Chan fiasco from last week. Oh, and for some godforsaken reason, we spend a long time talking about Joe Wright's Pan movie from 2015.

Waypoint Radio - Episode 298: Welcome to Work From Home
play

03/13/20 • 120 min

Hello Internet! The Waypoint Radio crew is back to talk about Video Games, but first we process the last tumultuous week in current events and politics. No, You didn't dream it, Sarah Palin was on The Masked Singer, and she did rap Baby Got Back. After the break, Patrick and Austin have been playing Ori and the Will of the Wisps, kicking off a slew of new releases coming out for the next month. Rob is checking out Frostpunk's The Last Autumn dlc, which fundamentally changes the game by setting it before the winter came. Cado is checking out the new Destiny 2 Season where the Cabal are doing their best impression of Gundam's Zeon forces by dropping a space station onto the Last City. Austin's been enjoying his time in the "gulag" in Call of Duty: Warzone, a one on one section of their new 150 player squad based battle royale. Stay safe everyone!

Discussed: Politics and Current Events (including COVID-19 talk) 00:00, Ori and the Will of the Wisps 43:49, Call of Duty: Warzone 1:08:05, Frostpunk: The Last Autumn 1:18:08, Destiny 2: Season of the Worthy 1:31:21, Roundguard 1:39:41, World Flipper 1:45:40

Waypoint Radio - Episode 294: Tom Nook's Timeshare

Grab your shovels and pack your bags because it’s (almost) time for Animal Crossing! Nintendo has dropped a new 25 minute(!) long direct detailing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Austin, Gita, and Cado are extremely excited to have a chill time on Nook's island. But first, the crew takes a quick trip to the Politics Corner to talk about the recent, absolutely bonkers Democratic debate. Cado played Wide Ocean, Big Jacket during the debate to help him calm down, a delightful game Patrick reviewed last week before he came down with the flu. Austin, Cado, and Patrick have also been checking out Corruption 2029, the not-as-flavorful follow up to 2018's Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden.

Discussed: Politics 3:04, Wide Ocean Big Jacket 13:24, Corruption 2029 24:14, Animal Crossing Direct 42:13, Covet Fashion 1:22:11, Destiny 1:24:25, No Man's Sky 1:25:17
