VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 34 - Why Indoor Players NEED Beach
play

04/19/23 • 88 min

What do all coaches and parents, who think beach volleyball teaches bad habits, have in common? That’s right - they’ve almost certainly never played the game! For those who have played both, it’s a ‘no-brainer.’ Beach volleyball gives indoor players a real edge when they come back in the gyms and off the sand. The mental and physical benefits of the game are quite obvious, and - aside from making players better, tougher, stronger, and faster - battling in the sand with no real coach (and having nowhere to hide) means that humility and independence are also valuable gains garnered from playing outdoors. Listen in while Zuby & Erik talk about their own journeys in beach volleyball and why every young player should be lining up to play, learn, and improve form from volleyball on the sand!

VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 29 - Do Good Coaches Know About Bad Coaches?
play

03/15/23 • 112 min

There are a lot of good coaches out there and they often find themselves feeling ‘attacked’ when parents, players, and even other coaches talk about all the ‘bad apples’ out there. But do good coaches know exactly how bad the coaching has gotten on a wider scale over the past 10 to 15 years? If we live within our own lanes, silos, and stories, we might not be aware of what’s happening across the board or with those ‘other coaches’ in our club. In this episode, the guys better define and illustrate what a ‘bad coach’ is by providing clear examples they (and countless other parents/players) have witnessed, seen, and heard in and around gymnasiums over the past several years. The goal is to show parents/players that it isn’t them, they’re not alone, and remind good coaches to maybe think twice before they decide to defend ‘all coaches’ all the time...just as we used to do before gaining a broader perspective (by having our kids play in the system for years).

play

12/21/22 • 106 min

It’s here! They’ve talked about the coaches and spoken at length regarding the parents - and now it’s time for Zuby, Erik, & Meach to unveil the ultimate season for the actual volleyball PLAYERS! Listen in or watch as the guys cover the key points of what it takes to be a winning and successful player in a time where coaches and teammates (and even some parents) are often more challenging to deal with than ever before. Listen, laugh, and LEARN from the former pros as they cover the keys to being a great teammate, how to be a coachable player with a winning mindset - and why external validation (good or bad) is a slippery slope on which to live & play. VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 15 - The Ultimate COACHING Season
play

12/07/22 • 119 min

This is it! Listen in as the former pro players/coaches at VOLLEYBALLOGY break down the key aspects and best practices employed by the top echelon of coaches to bring out the best in themselves, their players - and even the parents in a given season. Starting with tryouts, Zuby, Erik, & Meach provide a step by step blueprint or checklist for coaches who are interested in promoting excellence, the proper mindset, and reducing friction with players & parents (a vital component & problematic symptom often overlooked & left unaddressed by many coaches). The guys share a few laughs and even break into song a couple times (yes - they’re that passionate)...but don’t worry, fast-forwarding and muting are still easy to use features available to all our listeners.

11/16/22 • 104 min

While Meach decided to spend time with his OTHER family for reasons discussed, Zuby & Erik are left alone to answer another great batch of parents’ questions coming in from [email protected], as well as the VOLLEYBALLOGY Facebook Page & our YouTube comments section (please keep those coming by the way!).

In this second instalment of ‘Parents Q&A,’ the guys discuss the following important topics & questions:

  • Why do some coaches discourage beach volleyball and are they right to do so?
  • Is it wrong for coaches to bypass development in the interest of winning now?
  • How can players perform better in high stress situations like tryouts?
  • Can my kid burn out if he/she loves volleyball & training too much?
  • Do you owe your club some advance notice (or explanation) before leaving?
  • Any advice for my child who desperately wants to play professionally one day?
  • Should a young volleyball player continue to enjoy other sports or specialize?

VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 60 - Playing the Crazy Recruitment Game
play

11/20/23 • 94 min

It’s all rather exhausting and has evolved into a bit of a crazy ‘game’ over the past decade; and one that parents, players, and even coaches seemingly HAVE to play in order to get their young athletes into post-secondary college and university programs. But, is it the best way for coaches to find the REAL talent among the high school and club volleyball ranks, or are they only seeing the videos and carefully selected highlights of the players and parents who are just better at marketing (or have deep-enough pockets to hire the best marketers)?

Listen in as Zuby & Erik go deep on the fairness and thoroughness of the recruitment process today, and get into whether it’s still a game worth playing, and if it’s actually detrimental for players, parents, and coaches in its modern - & almost too convenient - form.

Ep. 59 - Coaching vs Yelling

VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored

play

11/10/23 • 85 min

We tend to coach the way we were coached or accept it when we see coaches instructing the way we’ve seen them on tv or while we were growing up, but is coaching today different than it was ‘back in the day’ - or should it involve yelling at all? More to the point, is there a difference between coaching & yelling & can great coaches be ‘yellers?’ Listen in as the guys share a few laughs and draw upon their pro playing & coaching experience to discuss the somewhat controversial topic of ‘coaching vs yelling’ and whether or not yelling (or even screaming) has its time & place in the instructional arena of youth sports today.

VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 58 - Do Physical Punishments Work?
play

10/22/23 • 73 min

We’ve all likely experienced some form of physical punishment (running laps, touching lines, push-ups, etc.) at a practice - as a parent spectator, an athlete, or even as a coach who’s organizing the team consequence. Much like parenting, the debate has raged in sport over whether or not these kinds of punishments are actually effective in having young people learn lessons or perform better...or are they simply teaching children to be more afraid and nervous? Is there a time and place for these kinds of consequences for teams and players or are they merely tactics designed to intimidate and bolster a coach’s image? Listen in as the guys discuss the various ways and settings in which physical fitness has been used as a form of punishment and whether or not it serves a purpose while attempting to develop young athletes and mold a certain mindset.

VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 57 - The Decline of High School Volleyball
play

10/10/23 • 69 min

Episode 57 - The Decline of High School Volleyball

What in the world is happening to high school volleyball? Of course, most high schools will struggle to court a team as good as one of the local club squads, but it seems that high school volleyball TODAY has really dropped off even when compared to high school programs from 10-20 years ago. So, what are the reasons why school volleyball is so far behind the club game and - more importantly - why does it seem worse than ever before? Listen in as the guys share a few laughs and discuss the obvious and not-so-obvious reasons behind the decline of high school volleyball.

VOLLEYBALLOGY UNcensored - Ep. 52 - Too Stressed To Watch Them Play?
play

08/30/23 • 84 min

In gyms around the world, parents - and even coaches - often struggle to watch their children & athletes play the game. We get it...it’s tough to see your kids in pressure situations and tougher to see them struggle, or even fail in key moments. Some parents have resorted to leaving the sidelines or deciding not to attend their kids’ games or tourneys. But what message are we sending our kids about sports when we ‘live & die’ with every point and each rally or when we tell them that we can’t even bear to watch them play? It’s easy to say that parents & coaches need to ‘gain perspective,’ but how can adults simply flick that switch and start helping their children enjoy the game more as a result? Listen in as the guys discuss the growing problem of impatience among parents & coaches, why it’s on the rise, and how to best manage and combat the issue for the benefit of our young athletes in the long run.
