06/03/20 • 35 min
The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today’s top leaders and business owners. In today’s episode, we sat down with Paige Held, Founder & CEO of Yoga Joint, and talked about how she pivoted her business and started offering virtual online yoga classes. Paige talks about surrounding your self with the right people in order to follow your passion and how she built a culture and community around her business.
Paige Held is the co-owner and founder of Yoga Joint and has been teaching yoga for 22 years. Paige embarked on her yoga journey at the young age of 16 in South Florida. Five years into her practice at 20 years old, she became certified to teach yoga and has spent numerous hours continuing her yoga education through attending workshops, intensives, retreats and other teacher trainings working with some of the most globally renowned yoga teachers.
Ten years into her teaching career, Paige created Hot Fusion Flow, her own unique and innovative style of yoga which was developed alongside her best friend Kelly Green. This style of yoga blends and gains inspiration from various styles of yoga such as Bikram, Ashtanga, Power Yoga, Anusara, and Shiva Rea.
Paige’s intention in her yoga classes is to utilize the physical exercise to bring mental awareness to a heightened state where her students are then able to realize where they are mentally, physically, and emotionally in their surroundings and to respond rather than to react. She is constantly encouraging her students to let go, have fun and find freedom in their bodies, minds and spirits. She draws much of her inspiration as a yoga teacher from her most important role as a mother to her 2 children and 2 stepchildren. Her classes are physically challenging and mentally enlightening with the goal of enabling real people to better manage real life situations. In Paige’s classes, her students can expect a challenging vinyasa flow with a heartfelt message and energetic music.

Covid-19 for Business: The Planet Needs A Break with Jeff Ransdell
The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today’s top leaders and business owners. In today’s episode, we sat down with Jeff Ransdell, Co-Founder of Rokk3r Fuel, and talked about how the world is changing rapidly and technology is at the forefront of this change, so everyone, including the government, small and large businesses must invest in technology.
Jeff Ransdell is a venture capitalist building a portfolio of exponential technology companies at Wynwood Arts District-based venture capital firm Rokk3r Fuel, which he co-founded in 2017 following a departure from the world of private wealth management. Jeff approaches venture capital with a signature “founder focused, investor driven” mindset, shaped by two decades as a top executive of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. As a managing director and market executive of the financial powerhouse, he managed more than $130 billion of global private client investment assets, a P&L of $2 billion, and over 2,000 employees across the bank’s Southeast Wealth Management Division. His transition to venture capital was motivated by what he saw as mounting evidence that opportunities to shape the economy and capitalize on innovation were steadily shifting from the public markets to the private markets. In the face of much skepticism, Jeff chose Miami, Florida, as the home base for Rokk3r Fuel, armed with an unparalleled rolodex and emboldened to leverage the city’s untapped resources and advantages. Rokk3r Fuel currently manages a $200 million fund and has a portfolio of more than 20 tech companies, including PredaSAR, Soundtrack Your Brand, Taxfyle and Bolt Mobility.
[1:04] Jeff runs a large venture capital firm.
[3:51] what this crisis has highlighted from the gap perspective is that there is a tremendous amount of need to get upgraded from a technology perspective.
[9:45] if you are a C.E.O of a major cooperation, your Job is to maximize share hold stock price.
[10:17] when you think about venture capital, you are investing in a company that you believe as an investor is going to fill a gap in a major cooperation strategy.
[21:37] you need to understand who your audiences are.
[23:48] there are three things people hold close to their hearts, one is their family, one is their health, and one is their money.
[23:57] when you are giving the opportunity to participate in one of does three things, you have to do it right.
[24:14] our mantra is “Investor driven and founder focused” but it all starts with the investor, because without the investor none of these companies exist.
[24:44] you need a mind of a capitalist but the heart of a social worker.
[36:58] if you are a successful person, you are successful for a reason and the enemy of great is good.

Covid-19 for Business: Be A Pioneer with Ian Bentley
The Upreneur podcast has partnered up with SCORE, hosted by Jeremy Straub, to help bring engaging conversations with today’s top leaders and business owners. In today’s episode, we sat down with Ian Bentley, Co-Founder & CEO of Parker Clay, and talked about how Ethiopia is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and this has allowed Ian to create jobs and opportunities to empower the people of Ethiopia. Parker Clay is deeply committed to producing every product ethically and sustainably without compromising on quality, while also transforming the community through trade.
In 2011 everything changed for Ian Bentley when he and his wife Brittany traveled to Ethiopia to adopt their daughter. Not only did they fall in love with the country, the culture, and the people they met, but they also saw first hand both a need and an opportunity to develop a company that could meet that need. Ian and his family moved to Ethiopia in 2012 to help support vulnerable women and children, and it was there they founded Parker Clay as a way to further transform the community through trade.
With a background in business development and a passion to enact change, Ian, along with his wife Brittany, laid the framework for Parker Clay while living in Ethiopia. Their desire was to create a company that showcased Ethiopian leather and premium craftsmanship, while also providing meaningful work and job training to underemployed and unemployed people in Ethiopia. Now Ian is co-founder and CEO of Parker Clay, a premium leather company making products in Ethiopia. Parker Clay is deeply committed to producing every product ethically and sustainably without compromising on quality, while also focused on creating job opportunities that empower vulnerable women to not just survive but thrive.
After living in Ethiopia for three years, Ian, his wife Brittany, and their 5 children moved back to their hometown of Santa Barbara to open the flagship Parker Clay store and continue to grow the business in the United States.
