In this unique episode of Tukatalks, Ram Sareen shares some of his personal health journey, his philosophy when starting Tukatech, and why he believes that family owned businesses are more resilient than public companies. Toward the end, Sareen shares clips submitted by Tukatech employees sharing how they have grown during their time with the company.
Ram Sareen started his fashion technology company, Tukatech, after a short-lived early retirement. At age 45, he'd had a cardiac arrest on a dentist's chair due to excessive anesthesia. He was declared dead, but was miraculously revived. With this second chance came a new perspective on life, people, and the reality that one day we all will leave this world. He decided to leave corporate America and retire early.
Just a few months into retirement, Sareen became restless from boredom. He knew he needed more than a life of leisure. He wanted to create something that made a difference, and thus Tukatech was born.
Sareen started Tukatech as a passion project, and was determined to avoid the common pitfalls of public companies. Tukatech remains a private, family-owned business to this day. This has given Sareen the ability to run his company his way, and to prioritize the development of his team over quarterly profit goals. This decision recently proved to be a wise one.
About 30 years later, in early 2024, Ram Sareen went in for a medical check up before a planned trip to Asia. The doctors discovered multiple blocked arteries in his heart, indicating a looming "silent heart attack," miraculously caught just in time to operate and repair the blockages.
Sareen was not allowed to work during nearly 2 months of recovery. Tukatech, however, continued operating and supporting users from all over the world. Some CEOs like to brag that nothing gets done without them. For Sareen, however, this trial proved that no matter what happens to him, his team is what makes Tukatech resilient.

As 3D software has become more popular in fashion companies, many are frustrated that adding 3D design doesn't seem to be reducing the amount of work required for product development -- or the number of physical samples required for approval. Ram Sareen has honed in on the foundational issue that prevents fashion businesses from succeeding in 3D fashion design and fit: the integrity of the 3D model. Here, he explains why the 3D model is so important, and the harmful practices that ruin fit.

This episode is the replay of a conversation between Ram Sareen and David Birnbaum hosted by Just-Style in the Cut the Noise webinar on September 23, 2020.
The key to developing a fashion business strategy is problem solving. Problem solving is not that difficult. It is not rocket science. Then again, to the rocket scientist, rocket science is not that difficult at least when compared to filling out a tax return. It is just what we do.

Problem solving is a three-part process:

  1. Agree there is a problem
  2. Recognize that solving the problem is sufficiently important to pay the price
  3. Devise a comprehensive integrated strategy based on accurate information

The obstacle is all about point 3. Using accurate information. In truth, we are all drowning in a sea of noise.

Some start with a solution, then shoehorn the data to fit that solution. Others employ one dataset to prove their point when a second or even a third dataset would provide better, more accurate information.

This seminar serves two purposes.

  1. To show how to separate out the noise and devise a strategy based on accurate information
  2. To provide solutions for serious problems facing Asia’s garment export industries

This is not some academic, theoretical exercise but practical, doable strategies that can materially affect millions of lives.

One final question: Why present this on a public platform? Would it not be better to speak directly to relevant governments and/or the national industry organizations?

Industries, countries, and perhaps the entire world are run by a dominant minority. It is only during a time of crisis, such as now, that the dominant minority can be replaced by a new creative minority. However, the dominant minority will not go down without a fight. Effecting real change requires ownership of the tools of change. Going to governments allows them to distort the process to protect themselves and their power. Going public denies the ability to distort.

Ram Sareen built his fashion technology company, Tukatech, on unlimited training, support, and engineering. Training was not just for the CAD operators who would do their daily work on the software, but also for middle and senior management to know what kind of information they could expect from the software.
Unfortunately, as management at apparel companies changes, their training has been lost and businesses are suffering as a result. This episode of Tukatalks is for fashion business owners who want to recover that training and learn how they can get more return on their investment from the TUKAcad software.

How can apparel businesses think about artificial intelligence, when so many have yet to successfully integrate virtual technology into their product development?
If you are still making physical samples after adding 3D to your fashion design process, you need to reevaluate your 3D system and how you use it. Ram Sareen outlines four things every apparel business must look for when considering 3D fashion technology: digital patterns, 3D fit models, digital cloth, and an open system.
