Learn to Say NO! to Toxic People GUEST: Laura Rubinstein
Transforming Relationship with Emotional Savvy
02/21/18 • 67 min
EMOTIONAL SAVVY: THE RELATIONSHIP HELP SHOW
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler, The Relationship Help Doctor
New insights on how to find love and support within yourself, to commit to creating and maintaining your healthy, safe life with other humans.
Do You Want to Feel Showered with Appreciation?
Do these things. Insights from Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
Guest Conversation with Laura Rubinstein -
Learn to Say No. What it Takes and Why We're Reluctant to Do It
Toxic people, difficult people, push you to do what they want you to do. Learn to say no.
They will shame you, blame you, and game you into it...or, at least try.
And, when you allow the manipulation, you feel one of two things:
- hopeful that, if you do what they want, they will like you more, or treat you better, or
- defeated, and ashamed or sorry, that you once again are giving in to them.
Neither of those feelings is helpful when you are in a relationship with a Hijackal®, right? Either way, you are disempowered.
You want to be in control of what you do, think, feel, and want. That's your right!
Toxic people will even go so far as to tell you what you feel or think, or at a minimum, what they think you should do, think feel, and want. You’ve noticed that, I’m sure. Don’t let them do that. They want to define your reality for you. If you let them, they will take over your life.
Focus on saying YES! to yourself.
- What do you want?
- What do you value?
- What is OK with you?
- How do you want to be treated?
- What is your vision for your life?
- How do you want to feel in relationships?
- What do you believe and how are you demonstrating that?
You have the absolute right to do your life your way! Therefore, you need to learn to say no to others sometimes, and learn to say yes to yourself more often. That's usually what's required to regain your balance.

What It Takes to Divorce a Difficult Toxic Person: A Hijackal®!
Transforming Relationship with Emotional Savvy
07/12/17 • 51 min
The first show! The Relationship Help Show: Move from Pain to Power is here to help you recognize and remedy relationships within yourself, and with the people in your life...especially with the relentlessly difficult people Dr. Shaler calls Hijackals®.
In this episode, the conversation is about divorce. Yes, for some people, it comes to that: divorce. And, it's a very big decision, especially if you don't clearly see and understand the traits, patterns and cycles of the difficult, toxic people, the Hijackals.
You may think that all that is going on is your fault. That's very common when you're with a Hijackal, s/he will make sure you hear constantly that everything is your fault. When you realize that's not the truth, often, there has been too much pain, and too many destructive things that have happened in your relationship. You know you cannot go back, and divorce is what's required to move forward.
Divorce is not a thing you plan on, but it sure is something you need to plan FOR.
What do you need to recognize to decide whether to stay or leave?
How do you decide what is enough? When is enough? Whether the relationship can be fixed? Or, when it's time for a divorce, or, at least, a separation? Big questions that you cannot take lightly, especially if you have children. This decision affects much in your life and planning is important.
Dr. Rhoberta Shaler, The Relationship Help Doctor, and her guest, Dr. Karen Finn, a divorce coach, discuss what it takes to leave a relentlessly difficult person, a Hijackal®. It will help you understand your next best steps.
CLICK HERE to learn More about Dr. Karen Finn
Dr. Karen Finn is a divorce coach. She works with individuals who are wondering if divorce is the best answer for them and their family, who need support in navigating the divorce process, or who want guidance with everything from co-parenting to dating as they embark on their life post-divorce.
Making life decisions like these aren't easy. In fact, they're some of the most difficult you'll ever face. But you have to make a decision because if you don’t, you’re going to stay stuck in exactly the same place you are in today. And I can guess that where you are today isn’t a good place to be.

Do Hijackals Become Wonderful With A New Partner? GUEST: Bree Bonchay
Transforming Relationship with Emotional Savvy
03/07/18 • 57 min
EMOTIONAL SAVVY: THE RELATIONSHIP HELP SHOW
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler, The Relationship Help Doctor
HOW CAN I LEARN TO TRUST? Part 2
Today. Dr. Rhoberta Shaler offers further insights into learning to trust, and learning to trust AGAIN.
Trust is such an essential element in a healthy relationship. You may have had previous experiences with folks in your life where you sadly learned you could not trust them. This tends to color your new relationships. Dr. Shaler offers insights to help you gain a new perspective on building trust, a new way of thinking about it that can offer help and hope.
If you missed Part 1, listen to Episode 33.
DO HIJACKALS BECOME WONDERFUL WHEN THEY GET A NEW LOVE?
GUEST: Bree Bonchay, MSW, LCSW
Can a toxic partner really change? A Hijackal®?
What is up with the Hijackal leaving you after being verbally and emotionally abusive, and taking up with a new partner, all sweetness and light? Can a Hijackal really change? And, that quickly?
Does a new partner bring out the best in a narcissist? It often seems that way, doesn't it? And, then, you wonder,
"If s/he can be that happy, laughing and loving, with someone new, was it me? Was I inadequate?"
And, you know what, that's exactly what the Hijackal delights in you thinking. That's because--wait for it--everything was your fault, right?
Bree Bonchay and I take a loaded psychological phrase that is really helpful in understanding why this is all so confusing and we unpack it. You'll understand better why you have the misgivings, and why and how you can set them to rest now.
In Part 2 of the interview, interesting insights into attitude and agreeableness. You'll want to hear about this agreeableness, and it's not what you think.
Very helpful interview to understand why you have such mixed emotions when leaving a Hijackal, and then, when the Hijackal finds new "supply" and seems to be so different from the person you last knew. Listen in.
Why does it seem that the Hijackal® has become an amazing, wonderful person with the new love of their life. Is it real? Today's show will help you to see what's really going on. You need to know.
Bree Bonchay is licensed psychotherapist with almost two decades of experience working in the field of mental health and trauma recovery. She specializes in helping people recover from toxic relationships, and shares her insights about Narcissistic Personality Disorder and psychopathy in her blog FreeFromToxic. Her articles have been featured in major online magazines, she is the founder World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day, (WNAAD), which is celebrated every 1st of June, and she is on the Board of Directors for The Association for NPD/Psychopathy Educators & Survivor Treatment More About Bree Bonchay, LCSW, psychotherapist
