Transfer Nation Talks
01/17/23 • 20 min
Happy New Year, Transfer Nation! We’re kicking off 2023 by continuing our conversation with Alex Torrez - this time delving into community college advocacy. Community colleges have long served as a tool for transfer, and yet they are still underutilized and stigmatized. In this episode, Heather and Alex discuss how to help dispel the stigma, address and solve hidden obstacles, and educate students’ support networks on the legitimacy and benefits of a community college education.
Alexandra Torrez is currently a Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow at the University of Virginia. After transferring from Las Positas College, she graduated magna cum laude from the University of California-Berkeley in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a focus in International Relations and Comparative Politics. At Berkeley, she served as the Transfer Director Chair for the Mixed at Berkeley Recruitment and Retention Center, which is a part of the bridges Multicultural Research Center. Alex is also the founder and director of Traditionally Untraditional, an organization dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to neo-traditional and transfer students.

Transfer Athletes Miniseries | Episode 1 | Introduction
Transfer Nation Talks
11/12/24 • 22 min
The experience of transfer athletes is an easily siloed topic in the transfer field. We do not often discuss what is happening in athletics and the parallels or contrasts with community college transfer. Artis Gordon and Heather Adams investigate what transfer can learn from athletics and vice versa in this miniseries.
The series will explore the community college transfer experience within athletics and aim to:
- understand the resources, support, and community that D1, D2, and D3 athletes have access to as transfer students;
- discuss the characteristics that make the transfer athlete experience unique;
- explore community, academics, and professional development through the lens of transfer athletes;
- and lastly, identify what transfer professionals can learn from athletics and how the two fields can better collaborate to support this student community in the transfer journey.

#StudentStory | Katherine Ibsen | 2022 Transfer Ambassador
Transfer Nation Talks
04/26/22 • 50 min
This #StudentStory features Katherine Ibsen, a current UC Berkeley undergraduate student and alumna of Sacramento City College. A NISTS 2022 Transfer Student Ambassador, Katie sits down with Dr. Heather Adams to share the motivations behind her love of anthropology and fashion, touch upon her experience with impactful mentorship and and advising as a CC student, and to make the case for implementing better support systems for transfer students at pivotal moments of their educational journey.
About Our Guest
Katie Ibsen is an undergraduate transfer student currently studying Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. While in high school, Katie suffered from undiagnosed ADHD and struggled academically in her courses. During her senior year, she was overwhelmed with school and did not submit any college applications. At the time, she did not realize that she had alternative options to a four-year degree, and so she ultimately took a gap year to work and consider her own goals. This is when Katie learned about the benefits of pursuing a community college education.
During her time at community college, Katie found a community of “vloggers” on YouTube whose main content centered on community college. She began to watch videos focused on study skills and tips for submitting applications. Through these videos, Katie was able to regain stability and motivation. She enrolled at the community college full-time and decided that it was her turn to promote the community college pathway by developing her own vlogs about her educational journey.
Today, Katie actively works to spread the word to others about the benefits of a community college education. Using her YouTube channel, the Vintage Academic, as a platform, Katie connects with hundreds of students to provide them with valuable information and vlogs that detail her transfer pathway.
