Transfer Nation Talks - #StudentStory | Katherine Ibsen | 2022 Transfer Ambassador
play

04/26/22 • 50 min

This #StudentStory features Katherine Ibsen, a current UC Berkeley undergraduate student and alumna of Sacramento City College. A NISTS 2022 Transfer Student Ambassador, Katie sits down with Dr. Heather Adams to share the motivations behind her love of anthropology and fashion, touch upon her experience with impactful mentorship and and advising as a CC student, and to make the case for implementing better support systems for transfer students at pivotal moments of their educational journey.

About Our Guest

Katie Ibsen is an undergraduate transfer student currently studying Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. While in high school, Katie suffered from undiagnosed ADHD and struggled academically in her courses. During her senior year, she was overwhelmed with school and did not submit any college applications. At the time, she did not realize that she had alternative options to a four-year degree, and so she ultimately took a gap year to work and consider her own goals. This is when Katie learned about the benefits of pursuing a community college education.

During her time at community college, Katie found a community of “vloggers” on YouTube whose main content centered on community college. She began to watch videos focused on study skills and tips for submitting applications. Through these videos, Katie was able to regain stability and motivation. She enrolled at the community college full-time and decided that it was her turn to promote the community college pathway by developing her own vlogs about her educational journey.

Today, Katie actively works to spread the word to others about the benefits of a community college education. Using her YouTube channel, the Vintage Academic, as a platform, Katie connects with hundreds of students to provide them with valuable information and vlogs that detail her transfer pathway.

We are kicking off #CCMonth with a #StudentStory featuring Jan Paolo Canteras, a recipient of the #NISTS2022 Transfer Student Ambassador award! During our conversation, Paolo detailed his Transfer journey from Long Beach Community College to the University of California, Irvine and delved into the importance of community building, advocacy, and representation for students pursuing a neo-traditional education pathway.

About Our Guest

Jan Paolo Canteras is a PILOT, a Viking, and a leader. He moved to the United States from the Philippines to be with family despite being only a few classes away from finishing a Business Finance degree in his home country. In Fall 2016, he enrolled at Long Beach City College, a school that he viewed as a gateway to the top universities in the nation. Paolo quickly emerged as a student leader, running for and eventually being elected Associated Student Body President. One professor described Paolo as a PILOT: a Pioneer with Initiative, Leadership skills, Open-Mindedness, and Tenacity. In Fall 2018, he was awarded the Viking Award, the highest LBCC student award, which recognizes outstanding leadership, success in academics, and extensive community service hours. Paolo successfully transferred to University of California-Irvine, where he is double majoring in Psychology and Sociology. His own experience motivated him to utilize his advocacy and leadership skills to help create the Student Transfer Engagement Access and Mentorship (STEAM) course. STEAM helps incoming transfer students integrate into campus life and provides support and community to curb the negative effects of transfer shock.

Transfer Nation Talks - The Art of Transfer Partnerships
play

01/31/22 • 39 min

Partnerships are critical to every element of transfer, and intentionally crafted partnerships contribute to more equitable transfer processes, policies, and programs. While there are many variations on this theme, at NISTS we believe the ultimate partnership occurs between the student, their sending institution, and their receiving institution. Today’s episode highlights research from the Community College Research Initiatives (CCRI) at the University of Washington.

Guest Bios

Dr. Lia Wetzstein is the Director of Community College Research Initiatives (CCRI) at University of Washington. She engages in education equity research on postsecondary education reform, vertical transfer, STEM education, and community college outcomes. Her commitment to social justice led her from multiple roles in STEM education to education research. She now leads CCRI’s equity agenda to enhance degree attainment and living wage careers for low-income learners and minoritized students.

Dr. Ling Yeh is a research affiliate with Community College Research Initiatives at the University of Washington, and is also Director of Research & Programs for the UW Brotherhood Initiative. Her work focuses on postsecondary access and completion for first-generation, low-income students and students of color, transfer policy & practice, community engagement, and program evaluation. Ling has over 20 years of professional experience working in higher education and non-profit sectors on college access and retention, service-learning, multicultural affairs, and federal TRIO programs.
