Tranquil Awakenings - Creative mindfulness for kids with Zoe Smart
play

07/16/24 • 46 min

In today’s episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with Zoe Smart who is a creative mindful practitioner who works with children to access and understand their feelings and emotions, using mindfulness-based practices to assist with this.

During this conversation Zoe highlights that we all have our struggles and difficulties, but we are not taught how to effectively deal with these from being young. Zoe believes that if we were, we would be able to regulate our emotions with increased ease which would in turn improve our connection with ourselves and others.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Emotions are there to give us a message.
  • When we understand the messages that emotions give us, we can make positive changes.
  • Mindfulness based techniques can help us to regulate our emotions and reactions.
  • Emotions are transitory.
  • We are not our behaviours.
  • We can learn from our mistakes.
  • Other people feel similar things to what we feel at different times of our lives.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I just think it, for anybody, it can only be a good thing to understand yourself better and be kind to yourself as well.”
  • “Just think from my own experience as well, of having mental health conditions from, so I had OCD from when I was six, and it's been a very hard journey for me. And we didn't have the kind of understanding, or it was like, ‘Oh, don't cry’.”
  • “We're not alone. We all feel like this sometimes. Because I think that was a huge thing for me, actually, when I was little, I thought I was the whole world, like, and I just felt like nobody understood. I was all on my own, but we all have our struggles, and we all have our things.”
  • “I think often we can be so critical and so harsh on ourselves. Far harsher than we would be if anyone else came to speak to us and said they were having a problem.”
  • “You can't always control external life events but what you've always got that you can control and keep your power with is how you choose to think, feel and react.”
  • “And you just think it's such a shame. I think because of the school system and how I feel really sorry for them because I know they try really hard, the teachers, but obviously there's so many children with different learning styles and different interests and not everybody is going to fit into that umbrella.”
  • “Do you need a little cry? What do you need? Why are you here? Is there a reason you're visiting me?”

Tranquil Awakenings - A mother and daughter’s journey with Linda
play

04/02/24 • 39 min

In today’s episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with her mum Linda Stephenson as they celebrate one year of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast.

During this conversation they will talk about their personal and shared journey, reminiscing on aspects of childhood and how it has shaped them today. Through this conversation they explore the roles that we play during our life and the impact these have on our identity, highlighting how our experiences can be used for our personal growth and understanding.

As part of this conversation, they discuss the spooky goings on in Debbie’s childhood home and how interests that we have as a child can be re-ignited as adults.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We can learn a lot from children in terms of the way they interact with the world around them.
  • The importance of allowing children and others to be able to share their experiences without the fear of judgement.
  • Our identity can often become shaped by the roles that we play within our life e.g. parent, partner, employee.
  • It is important to make time for your own wellbeing and development beyond these roles and expectations.
  • Childhood experiences can influence our lives as adults.
  • The environment you are in and the people you are around can make a big difference to your wellbeing.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “And that's kind of like our experience growing up, our parents obviously loved us in their own way, but we spent a lot of our time fending for ourselves.”
  • “You can learn so much from a child as well. They are wonderful. They speak and say what they think and what they mean. And it's really lovely to hear it because they're coming from a different place and it's so nice. The world looks so beautiful in their eyes and there's so much to do and explore.”
  • “But then after that we travelled to see your grandma in a nursing home, and I was a toddler at the time. It was the first time I thought about death.”
  • “It wasn't a house that I would have ever picked, but it was near the school, and it had the room we needed. I never quite liked the feel of it.”
  • “As you all got older, more seemed to happen, like I could be on my own in the house, just doing housework downstairs, and I'd hear one of you children shout me from upstairs, and I'd go up and then realise you were all at school.”
  • “That's the time when I started to find out more about me, and who I was rather than being somebody's mum and somebody's wife, it's the time when I started to find out about me.”

Tranquil Awakenings - Disconnection within the System with Tomato Dave
play

03/27/24 • 48 min

In today’s episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with Tomato Dave, a retired mental health nurse who took a different approach to working with his patients.

During this dialog, Debbie and Dave discuss their connection, which leads onto a conversation about mental health and spiritual experiences.

Throughout Dave’s career he placed great importance on working with the individual as a whole, looking at how they could be supported in all aspects of their well-being and spiritual awareness.

Dave highlights the significance of being able to safely explore emotions and the different facets of human experience in order to promote recovery, healing and growth.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The medical model doesn’t currently factor in emotional awakening or spiritual experiences.
  • The world around us can have an impact on our well-being.
  • Connecting with nature can help to ground us and settle our emotions.
  • It is important to find your tribe who speak the same language as you.
  • We have the answers within us and when we are given time and a safe space to explore, this can lead to positive and profound transformation.
  • It is important to build up resilience and become aware that emotions are a natural part of human experience in response to different situations.
  • Taking responsibility for our actions and behaviours is important for healing and well-being.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I think the Western world tends to push most of the time about somebody's mentally ill. And he said to me, he'd seen her, he'd assessed her, and he said, I think this is somebody that you need to see.”
  • “And that's how they're trained. There's nothing that they ever do in terms of knowledge gaining that is to do with emotional awakenings or the spiritual connections.
  • “I reflected and thought, well, if she'd been seen straight away by one of our psychiatrists, she would have been deemed seriously unwell, diagnosed, medicated and possibly incarcerated, really, you know, sectioned on the mental health act.”
  • “But this is something that's fascinated me for years. It's this idea of lunacy. Well, lunar is about connecting with the planets, the moon, the shifting of all those sorts of things. And why are we naïve enough to believe that if the lunar cycles can shift oceans and tides, why can we not be shifted by that?”
  • “If people were taken to a tribe somewhere else who understood this idea of voices, seeing things, they would be revered as quite shamanic, quite insightful, quite connected to different things.”

This sparked her passion in therapy, encouraging her to pursue learning various therapeutic models including hypnotherapy, nutrition, and NLP.

Through this journey Kirsty began to realise that our health and wellbeing can be impacted by what we are feeding ourselves, not only in terms of the food we digest, but also the information we accept as true and the limiting beliefs and thought patterns we hold as fact. BEST MOMENTS

  • “I didn't realise, but a limiting belief that came up for me that I had was that I need to work hard in order to get anything and if I didn't work really hard, then actually I would not be safe.”
  • “I thought, I want to be like that. I want more for myself. And I made a decision that I wasn't going to ruin my life no matter what I'd gone through.”
  • “I noticed a big difference in my personality, which I thought was something that was static. But actually, I realized I'm not this person that I'm being, and I was able to find my way back to myself.”
  • “I know that my heart wouldn't be as kind as it was if I hadn't been through the things that I'd been through.”
  • “One thing I found really helpful for me is to think back to when you were a child, what did you love doing?”
  • “You really do become the best kind of person that you can be when you when you get rid of all those heavy feelings.”

BEST MOMENTS

  • “ So my kind of life history, I got bullied at school in the UK. I went to South Africa, and I got bullied at school there. And then when we came back, my father enrolled me in an all-boys school in Plymouth and I thought I ain't gonna get bullied here, so I became the school nutter.”

Tranquil Awakenings - Life after Trauma with Klare Bailey
play

01/29/25 • 34 min

In today’s episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with Klare Bailey, who after fleeing domestic abuse, began a journey of intense study, to understand how the trauma had impacted her body and mind. Through this journey a passion within her grew to help women who had fled domestic abuse situations.

Klare who is a trained counsellor, coach, and eye movement therapist, now works with women to help them learn how to value themselves through supporting them to change the negative voice within their mind, something which Klare notes has often come from their abuser or upbringing, with the aim of helping each client develop their self-esteem and confidence.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • After experiencing situations of trauma, the body and mind can go into overdrive.
  • Patterns of abuse or toxic relationships often begin in childhood.
  • Our identities are shaped by the experiences we have had.
  • It is important to challenge your limiting thoughts and beliefs about yourself.
  • Looking for the glimmers, the tiny magical moments in everyday life can support well-being.
  • If you are in an abusive relationship, it is important to seek help and support.
  • Finding time for rest and relaxation is an important element of recovery.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “So essentially what happened was, approximately 13 years ago, I had to do a runner from a relationship that was abusive, highly, highly toxic, involved women's aid, police, solicitors, lots of stuff. I had the most amazing support. However, what I found was that once I'd got out and the dust had settled, all the help disappeared. And I was kind of left in this state of being absolutely shell shocked.”
  • “I was like, you know what, I cannot live my life like this. I have to sort this out myself. So, I started on this epic journey, fascinating, epic, real hyper focus of studying trauma, the impact of trauma, what happens in the brain, what happens in the body, everything to do with it because I needed to understand why my body was behaving that way, why my brain was behaving that way. I had to find my own route to get better.”.
  • ”So it was a personal journey that gave me this fire and determination, passion to say, no, we're not tolerating this anymore. There has to be a better way.”
  • ”When we actually look at what happens in the brain and we've got these neural pathways that, and I always think they're a little bit like if you're building a road system, you know, you start off with the kind of baby neural pathway and it's essentially like a little bit of a footpath going through the and then if you go over it enough times, it becomes a more definite pathway.”
  • “ And I always think it's a little bit like, you know, when you're rolling a snowball, it takes a while to get it going, but my golly, you know, once, once they get going, it's amazing.”
  • ”Just that you're worth it. You are absolutely worth it. And I know it's hard, but I promise you the work is worth putting in.”

Tranquil Awakenings - Healing the gut with Amanda Whitehead
play

11/20/24 • 45 min

In today’s episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with Amanda Whitehead, who after years of suffering with irritable bowel syndrome, a sluggish liver, and SIBO (small intestinal bacteria overgrowth), turned to learning about alternative methods of healing, analysing what she chose to put into her body, both with the foods that she ate and the thoughts she allowed into her mind.

Through the changes she made, she was able to reverse these afflictions, leading a balanced lifestyle that suits her unique body. She now supports others in doing the same through exploring nutrition and well-being.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We need to address the underlying issues as to what is causing imbalances, not just mask over them.
  • Supressing emotions is unhealthy.
  • Gut health impacts your physical health, mindset, and your emotions.
  • There is more to healthy eating than just counting calories.
  • In order to feel well, we need to look at what nutrients our food is giving us.
  • Mindset is an important consideration when making changes to your diet.
  • It is important to listen to your body’s needs.
  • For your well-being, it is essential to be able to express emotions in a healthy way.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “We've got to look after ourselves and we've got to nourish ourselves and we've got to feel safe.”
  • “When I'm working with my clients I try to encourage them to actually not look at the calory content and to actually ask themselves ‘How is this nourishing my body? How is it actually fuelling my body?’”
  • “So sometimes it's actually training your brain because at the end of the day, a lot of the addictions that we have towards food, is actually our brain that gets fixated on it.”
  • “My passion is the gut and the liver and it's those organs that regulate pretty much everything about us.”
  • “Actually, I need to accept that this is where I've been. This is what I've gone through. And these are possibly the reasons why I'm eating like I am, or I have the habits that I have.”
  • “But it wasn't actually allowing me to express what I needed to express.”
  • “We are all the experts of us because nobody else is walking in our shoes. No one knows really how you feel or what you're thinking. So, once you actually help start building their confidence and give them that power back, I think sometimes that's actually really transformational on its own.”
  • “And we're not meant to be the same person. So, even tomorrow you're meant to be someone different. You know, you're meant to constantly be evolving and changing.”

play

09/17/24 • 45 min

In today’s episode of the Tranquil Awakenings Podcast, Debbie will be in conversation with Samantha Dolling who is a medical herbalist, reader, energy healer, and witch.

During their discussion Sam notes how she has been drawn into researching the lives of witches throughout history and has developed a calling to heal the witch wound within herself and within others. Sam highlights that the historical treatment of witches still has an impact and plays a role within modern society, with many individuals feeling afraid to tune into their energy, wisdom and magic due to the perception of others.

To help overcome this, Samantha notes that it is important to connect in with what you enjoy, find like-minded individuals that you can share openly with, and also to do the self-healing work that you require.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There has been a re-emerging interest in witches and witchcraft in recent times.
  • Healing the witch wound is a re-occurring theme that comes up within the therapy setting and within the life of many individuals.
  • Healing past life trauma can help release the witch wound.
  • Working on healing the self is part of the ascension path.
  • As we heal, we step into our power.
  • Life is about finding out what you enjoy and connecting into that.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “I think it's one of those subjects isn't it that everyone, you know, most people have some kind of interest in witches, whether it be the Disney side of things, or the magic or nature, because it seems to thread through so many different layers of things, doesn't it?”
  • “They were just women who were natural healers and midwives, herbalists, and people who knew that there was energy.”
  • “And you know, these doors are opening, but they're opening as well because we're moving through a time where we need to heal karma. You know, we need to rid everybody of all their karma so we can move into a more peaceful way of living.”
  • “And these women are our ancestors, you know, we're all connected, all of us, and these are real women with real children and real lives.”
  • “There's no wonder that many of us who have come down to earth at this time are here to find our voice again.”
  • “The water holds energy and consciousness, the trees, you know, it's all just energy, whether we call it, energy or whether we call it quantum physics, science. It's the same thing, isn't it? It's just different ways of practicing and there's no right way and no wrong way, you know, we're all different, but we all have something to give.”
  • “We're all supposed to be in jobs and living our life with things that are fun. You know, we're not meant to be doing a job from eight till six every day that we absolutely detest just to pay for the roof over our head.”

Upon using this machine, Vandana’s mother-in-law benefitted greatly, which inspired them to invest in a machine of their own, bringing it to Lincolnshire to support others with pain and health issues, as well as for those who want their body to be the best it can be.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “The summer before last, my mother-in-law, she was diagnosed with palliative cancer and she was already sort of previously recovering from an operation and radio and chemotherapy. So, the state that she was in was quite fragile. She's really low on energy, she was getting really tired, and we just were kind of in a place where we thought we need something to sort of support her, just to give her a bit of a boost.”
  • “But then after her second session, the next day, we asked her, mum, you know, how are you, how are you feeling? And she said she felt good. She got off the Human Regenerator and she had a bit of a light on her face, and she felt good. And we did over 20, 000 steps around central London, which was something that she hadn't done in a very long time before.”
  • “That's when we decided, you know, we'll get one here up in Lincoln and try and help more people and also support mum as much as we can, just to give her the quality of life that she could have with her limitations. And yeah, that's kind of how our journey started.”
  • “They're just happier in themselves and they don't have that kind of the pain or the struggle in the back of their mind and they're able to do more than they think they could have done.”
  • ”And then having the human regenerator on top of that. It's just been a game changer. I feel good. I don't feel tired after a really long day of work, and I don't feel low on my energy or touch would not been poorly for quite some time. So, I think it works as a really good compliment to a great lifestyle.”
