Teaching Poetic Writing with Pie Corbett
02/10/23 • 49 min
In this episode, Pie returns to the podcast to chat with Toria about poetic writing and how to teach this effectively. Pie is an excellent poet – but he is also an excellent teacher of poetry - reading it and writing it.
Pie is a fount of imaginative teaching ideas that work to help children express themselves in poetry and/or prose and shows teachers how to create the bridge between the two. He created the Talk for Writing approach to learning, which is widely used in UK primary schools.
During the episode Pie shares his approaches to teaching poetic writing, how he uses poetry models (which can be found in his book Catalysts) as starting points and even creates some poems with Toria.

The Leadership Journey with Oliver Wright
In this episode, Toria talks to Oliver about what we can learn about leadership from those in senior positions. We discuss how most of us, whatever our role or job title, are acting as leaders. Seeing ourselves as learners and leaders is an important step. Realising that all of us, no matter how far on in our leadership journey, will experience a sense of imposter syndrome (and that’s normal) is another important realisation.
Oliver lives in Sheffield; having worked in primary education for over 25 years. His experience ranges from large city to small Peak District schools, including 8 years of headship in two very different settings. During his time in school, he led on a whole range of developments from curriculum design, use of new technology and improving teaching and learning to improving engagement with parents and large-scale building projects as well as looking after the thousand-and-one tasks involved in the day-to-day running of a school. He now supports those who lead, engages in school improvement work, presents Talking Heads on Teacher Hug Radio and is a school governor. Connect with Oliver here:
