In this episode of Paige’s Perspective, we’re breaking down the excuses addicts use to justify staying the same—the guilt trips, the half-promises, and the ways they frame their struggles to keep you invested. You’ve heard it all: “In sickness and in health,” “Unconditional love means accepting me as I am,” “I’m trying! Recovery takes time!” —but what’s really happening beneath the surface? These aren’t necessarily intentional attempts to manipulate, but they are ways addicts avoid growth—and when those excuses keep you stuck in a cycle of harm, it becomes abusive.

Nobody talks about how addicts’ behaviors are often abusive. And society? It lets them off the hook, telling you to be patient, to understand, to wait just a little longer.

But here’s the truth: Addiction may be an explanation, but it’s not an excuse to keep hurting people. Abuse doesn’t have to be calculated to be real. At some point, effort needs to match impact, and words need to turn into action. In this episode, we’re exposing the stories addicts tell themselves and their partners to avoid real accountability—so you can stop getting lost in their excuses and start focusing on what you need.

Books like "Codependent No More" and programs like CODA or Alanon offer a lot of helpful insight on the topic of codependency. Codependency is a dysfunctional relationship pattern where one person's self-worth and identity become excessively reliant on the approval and needs of another person. Codependency does explain some of the behaviors that take place in an addicted relationship, but the story is a bit more complex than this. The "Lost" feelings that many spouses and partners have are sometimes the byproduct of abusive behaviors, gaslighting and the calculated altering of someone's reality in order to keep the addicted train rolling. That is, codependency doesn't tell the whole story and therefore focusing deeply on it as the solution will not fix the entire issue. Simply working on your codependent behaviors will not get you to your end goal of a happy and healthy relationship, nor will it address the trauma from years of abuse that is often present in addicted relationships. Just focusing on your codependency or your own issues and not acknowledging the why of these behaviors is a failure to examine the role that abuse plays in a romantic relationship. In this episode we discuss some of our own healing that was necessary due to the years of gaslighting, mistreatment, devaluing, and disregard of basic human needs in our relationship.

What makes a great relationship? Is it knowing everything about your partner, or is it feeling truly known by them? In this episode of Till the Wheels Fall Off, we dig deep into what it means to be seen, heard, and understood in our closest relationships.

Drawing from personal experiences, text conversations, and research—including a study that confirms feeling known by your partner is a stronger predictor of relationship satisfaction than knowing them—we explore how genuine curiosity and active listening can transform the way we connect with our loved ones.

Paige and Matt share their own journey of rebuilding connection after years of imbalance, discussing the challenges of feeling unseen, the hesitation in opening up again, and the intentional efforts that foster emotional safety. They also break down practical ways to create deeper bonds with your partner, kids, or anyone who matters in your life.

If you’ve ever felt unheard in a relationship or struggled with getting your partner to open up, this episode is for you. Tune in to learn how shifting from trying to be interesting to being truly interested can change everything.

In this episode, we share our personal journey through Matt's recent surgery and the challenges of managing pain with opioids - his past drug of choice. This was scary, new territory for us and it's a slippery slope given the history of addiction. We discuss the emotional complexities surrounding the surgery recovery, how we planned in advance and discussed the decision to treat the pain with a dangerous substance, the accountability built into the situation, the importance of open communication, and how we navigated the fears and realities of pain management together. Opiates in an emergency setting are tricky in recovery, and we believe this conversation will be helpful and insightful for couples and individuals that are navigating difficult emotions around pain treatment in sobriety as well as those that have faced a relapse. This candid conversation highlights the significance of trust, accountability, and the growth that can come from facing difficult situations as a couple. We navigated this one successfully and we're both incredibly proud of how we faced it and we think you'll gain quite a bit from this one too if you find yourself having to go down this road.
