Creative Unions Against Monopolies w/ Srsly Wrong
01/04/22 • 108 min
A practical guide to boycotting monopolies from within the creative industries. Co-hosted with Aaron Moritz and Shawn Vulliez from Srsly Wrong, a utopian leftist comedy podcast. Is it worse to work on a recruitment advert for the US military than for the New Zealand military? Staring down job offers from Amazon studios versus Marvel (owned by Disney)? With a foot in the toxic wheel of advertising/film industries, but sometimes finding oneself in a position to choose, how should you use this power?
Boycott can be a powerful tool and has a deep (and controversial) history, and there are many lenses through which to view it. We explore the complexities of recognising unethical practices, the importance of staying with your cognitive dissonance, and ultimately taking inspiration from those who managed to say no during the Milgram experiment and demanding ethical outcomes and dignity as a worker.
