The Wrestling Life Support Podcast - AEW Instant Reaction: AEW Dynamite on TNT (September 16, 2020)
play

09/17/20 • 57 min

In this week's Wrestling Life Support Podcast AEW Instant Reaction episode, we take a look at AEW Dynamite from Wednesday, September 16th, moments after it went off the air.

Our hosts, Jay and Donnie, review a Dynamite trying to redeem itself after a few lackluster showings—but could that be possible when you have a feud no one cares about as your main event? Maybe. Not only do the guys dive deep on a main event that was so very close to being really great—they talk about “Stone Cold” Matt Jackson, “The Chair Swinging Freak” Will Hobbs, the new stables and factions drinking game (trademark pending), why no one wants to defend crowd jobbers, and why AEW has the best collection of managers since the 1980s WWF.

Wait...hold up, did we say that a match involving Chuck Taylor was almost great? That’s a first.

Plus, we will be handing out our grades!

It's time for another Wrestling Life Support Dream Card! Get ready...this one is wacky!

The great Donnie Mueller has to fantasy book his way through an event that's part Survivor Series, part Crockett Cup, and could determine the greatest wrestling promotion of all-time!

32 promotions...from WWWF to WCW, AEW to Michinoku Pro...

128 wrestlers...Hulk Hogan to El Canek, A.J. Styles to Shinya Hashimoto...

But only 1 will earn the title of Greatest Promotion Ever!

This is one for the ages!

All of this PLUS an "Ask Donnie" segment discussing the greatest fictional wrestler of all-time, the most underrated WWWF/WWF/WWE World Champion of all-time, and what wrestling personality should have their own podcast!

In this week's fan’s choice episode, hosts Jay Lauderdale and wrestling historian, Donnie Mueller, take a look back at NWA Starrcade 1983: A Flare for the Gold, as voted on by the WLS listeners! This event is held in such high regard, notably as Ric Flair’s launching pad to superstardom...but is it warranted? That’s a question that our hosts discuss throughout, along with other topics ranging from the greatness of the Piper-Valentine Dog Collar match and Gordon Solie to the weirdness of Jerry Brisco pre-match balancing act and no one caring about poor, bloodied, beaten Scott McGhee to the downright awfulness of Gene Kiniski as referee. Plus, we’re pretty sure that this card set the world record for funky chicken dance movies (thanks to Rufus R. Jones, Bugsy McGraw, and Charlie Brown from Outta Town) and backstage interviews.

In addition to the review, this episode features The Enhancement Talent of the Week, the mysterious Bobby Who. Some of his greatest hits can be found here:

The Wrestling Life Support Podcast - WWF at Madison Square Garden (June 3, 1991) featuring the Desert Storm Match!
play

07/20/20 • 72 min

In this week's episode, host Jay Lauderdale and wrestling historian, Donnie Mueller, take a look back at a WWF house show from Madison Square Garden in New York on June 3rd, 1991. This card is noted for having the bloody brawl that was the Desert Storm match between WWF Champion, Hulk Hogan, and challenger, Sgt. Slaughter, with General Adnan. Is this house show, mere months before SummerSlam, actually better than the iconic August PPV? Donnie and Jay discuss this very question plus tackle how Earthquake's and Jake Roberts' feud was essentially an MSG-only mini-angle, the unnecessary WWF-izing of Ricky Steamboat and the Iron Sheik (and Tito Santana, though he's not on the card), could Steamboat and Perfect been the right call in August, why The Barbarian gets no love from smarks, the greatness of a Heenan-Fuji match, and if we just witnessed Paul Roma manhandling Road Warrior Animal. This and a lot more on this week's installment of The Wrestling Life Support Podcast!

In addition to the review, this episode features The Enhancement Talent of the Week and former Crockett Cup and NWA World Tag Team Title participant, Joe Cruz. Some of his greatest hits can be found here:

The Wrestling Life Support Podcast tackles WrestleMania 11 this week! See what I did there...tackles...because LT? Hey now! But seriously...was this a WrestleMania or an In Your House? At least we got 1995 Pamela Anderson!

From Jim Ross manning the aisles (?) to an "I Quit" match that managed to make Roddy Piper seem annoying to HBK's game of "toss the cameraman", this is definitely a WrestleMania that has its share of misses. But does it land anything? Tune in to find out!

Plus...another installment of "Ask Donnie"!

It's January and that means one thing - Royal Rumble month! The Wrestling Life Support Podcast goes back to the beginning and takes a look at Royal Rumble 1988 which aired live on the USA Network. Not only do the guys review the 20-man version of what would become a professional wrestling staple, they are treated (probably not the right term in many of these instances) to an early in-ring contract signing between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, an attempt at the bench press world record that turned into an attempt at the world's longest non-wrestling segment on a wrestling show record, the always-60 year old Judy Martin, and the Jumping Bomb Angels!

But wait! There's more! We also have another "Ask Donnie" segment covering topics from Skinner and The Executioner to the worst finisher to the best stable not named the Four Horsemen, New World Order, or DX.

We're back! You know you missed us!

The Wrestling Life Support Podcast returns and takes on a Jay Lauderdale-favorite (or is it?): WCW Starrcade 1991 - Battlebowl: The Lethal Lottery. It's a show so dysfunctional that it needed three names.

From questionable execution of a pretty cool concept to questionable ring attire from The Nightstalker, it's a show where we have to decide if the MVP is Terrence Taylor or Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker. And that, my friends, ain't good.

All of this, plus a very special ASK DONNIE segment!
