Our host, Jessica Yañez brings her love for wine and passion for storytelling together to highlight the stories that need to be told in communities of color. Chisme (Spanish for gossip) comes from the interviewees themselves as they "spill the wine" on their own terms. So grab a glass of wine and join us for the new Wednesday. #WineAndChismeWednesday

BIO:

Gianfranco Fernández-Ruiz (the hyphen is silent) is a Salt Lake City-based, AfroLatinX writer/director, whose emphasis on character marks culture as integral to identity, but second to story. His work mirrors the frail and current socio-political climate with tongue-in-cheek dialogue and nuanced behavior that give characters depth and relatability, distinct but somehow common--a feat that has drawn attention from the Sundance Labs (a 2021 finalist), Nicholl’s Fellowship & Screencraft Competitions.

He and Zach Johnson, lifelong friends and cinephiles, work to bridge the gap between the siloed other and the mainstream, focusing on simple slices of life and relationship dynamics. Gianfranco’s stories are a bright mix of the beats, verve, and rhythm of the tribal-and-Dominican-native tambora drum and the urban percussion of 90s boom-bap. For him, film is about discovery, catharsis and decolonization.

Wine: Armitage Wines, Santa Cruz Mountains, Pinot Noir 2018

BIO:

Pabel Martinez Global Account Director at TikTok

Pabel's superpower is uncovering the story behind the numbers; translating data to stories. He's been able to flex this skill at various technology companies such as Facebook (previous employer) and TikTok (current employer). Although he's been successful, he has met challenges along the way.

Like many POC, he's experienced imposter's syndrome, microaggressions, and racism. He would often REPRESS parts of his identity inside & outside of work work in an effort to feel more included and less judged.

Pabel's mission in life became redefining professionalism for Latinx communities by empowering authenticity. In 2020, he launched Plurawl to bring this mission to life.

Pairs great with poultry rich fish, spicy food, veal and sweet desserts.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to persuade her too hard to come not the podcast and share about our lives going up. An honestly, we do get pretty real but keep it funny.

WINE: 1000 Stories 2017 Zinfandel

Luis Quiroz is an immigrant from Guerrero, Mexico. His parents left their home country in search of a better future for him and his siblings. They settled in San Diego, CA where they lived for all of Luis' childhood. Luis now lives in San Francisco, CA, where his business is based. He helps a variety of small businesses and uses his bilingual skills to help Spanish Speaking business owners.

Growing up, Luis' mom was a Tupperware saleswoman. He'd be so embarrassed on elementary school field trips when his mom was closing sales with his teachers! But he later understood his mom's motives- it was necessary to put food on the table.

After graduating from SFSU with a Business Marketing degree, Luis felt the need to give back to those who need help the most. Inspired by merchants like his mother, he developed a business model to help small business owners and entrepreneurs build a strong social media presence while implementing social media strategies into their marketing mix.

Luis is currently working with merchants along the Mission Street Corridor in San Francisco to help business owners tap into the power of social media. His goal is to empower clients with the confidence and savvy they need to run their own social media channels while offering a variety of services such as strategy, content creation, and social media advertising.
