Darren Hardy, an accomplished flautist and Northumbrian pipes player, has been a Yeoman Warder for the Tower of London since 2019. Prior to guarding the Tower, Darren was a musician with the 6RRF Band for almost a decade. During this period, Darren also spent time as an instrument repairer specializing in flute repairs, while also customizing instruments and teaching instrument maintenance to students.
Later on, Darren joined the Reserve Army as a member of the 6th Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. This is where he began learning the Northumbrian Pipes. In 1996, Darren joined the Honorable Artillery Company, and became the Assistant Band Sergeant Major of the Band of the Coldstream Guards. Darren performed in State Ceremonial events including Trooping the Colour and the Changing of the Guard, the 1998 Edinburgh Tattoo Finale, and the Sydney Tattoo in 2010. He also successfully penned the words to Tyne Cot Passchendaele. Darren proudly served with distinction for 23 years.
In 2019, Darren earned the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), a British medal presented to sergeants and warrant officers of the British armed forces for distinguished meritorious achievement and service.
