In this episode of the Trailer Music Composer’s Podcast I got to chat with the freelance music supervisor, Emma Middleton (@rubatomusic_uk).

In our conversation, Emma was so wonderfully transparent about all the aspects of music supervision and how she came to be in that role. This is gonna be such a helpful interview to listen to togive you a better understanding of how the trailer music world works.

Emma is a trailer-specialist Music Supervisor. Off the back of in-house agency experience, she launched freelance (in the middle of the pandemic!) in 2021 and set up her company, ‘Rubato Music’ (with an ethos based around Rubato being her favourite musical term).

Emma was voted “Music Supervisor of the Year” in 2020 at AIM Sync and is both winner + nominee of Music & Sound Awards for her custom music supervision work on The Crown Season 3 trailer & Season 4 teaser. Also a composer, she occasionally jumps in and gets her hands dirty – recent work: a collaboration on “The Witcher” Season 2 Teaser Trailer.

Besides music, she's a self-proclaimed 'cat lady', and an avid gamer who's very excited for the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us to come out...

Emma enjoys discovering and applying unusual or unexpected tracks to experiment and have fun with the trailer form, whilst keeping a firm handle on the necessary pacing and intensity required for these campaigns.

The Trailer Music Composer's Podcast is back

Happy New Year Everyone - 2022 is here and what a way to kick it off (albeit it a little late) than to re-launch the Trailer Music Composer’s Podcast!?

You may have noticed that I took a little break from producing episodes for the show/site. I was simply following my own advice and giving myself some space for reflection and to avoid overwhelm whilst Vik and I launched the second year of Protege.

So what should you expect from the Trailer Music Composers’ Podcast this year?

Firstly I am not going to stray from the solo banter / monolog format we have all come to know and love. It gives me a reason to leave the house and enjoy the local woods whilst also getting to answer some of your burning questions about Trailer Music.

Secondly I have lots of very exciting guests lined up to join me on the show and give you all some super awesome insights into the world of Trailer Music.

The Trailer Music School is Changing

I’m also going to take this opportunity to tell you that the Trailer Music School is going through some changes. It’s basically becoming a teenager. It's so different.

Not that I need to explain the inner workings of the business BUT the courses are being migrated off of wordpress and onto another platform.

All New Inventive Instruments Are Here...

I have been busy producing a load of new instruments for my own use. I have used these new instruments on all of the latest Elephant Music releases and now I am going to be releasing them to the public.

As you know I launched this company a few years ago but let it take a back seat whilst I worked on the TMS and Protege (and my writing of course).

I felt kind of bad for myself putting all that time into these products and then just leaving them on my own hard drive to only be used by me. As you know I believe that we should be sharing what we do with the world and seeing it as a kind of service.

So, I decided to get all my Inventive Instruments ready and put them in a bundle of joy.

There are 10 previously unreleased Kontakt instruments in the bundle and, well, I think it’s totally awesome. Of course I would though right!?

I will keep you posted when this is ready.

Writing the music for The Witcher: Season 2 teaser trailer, with Emma Middleton and Kiaran Scragg

In this episode of the Trailer Music Composer’s Podcast I am joined by not one, but two very special guests. The supervisor/composer duo Emma Middleton (@rubatomusic_uk) and Kiaran Scragg (@fortnowhere).

Together the two of them wrote the track featured on the teaser trailer of The Witcher Season 2. On the show they go into so much detail on how they wrote the track together, even down to the samples they recorded and the plugins on the mastering chain.

This interview was such an insight into the world of custom covers.

Here’s a little bit about Emma and Kiaran:

Kieran Scragg is the Creative Director of My Hart Canyon Music Ltd. In his twenties he toured the world and made albums with two bands and as a result had a history in tv and film sync before approaching the trailer world with songs used on Greys Anatomy and The Twilight Saga.

Kieran’s signed to Pusher and has worked on trailers such as ‘Death on the Nile, The Crown S3 trailer and S4 teaser, The Many Saints of Newark, Dr Death and The Witcher S2 teaser. He lives in on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon and has two kids, two gerbils and a wife. He’s listened to Richard’s podcast for a number of years, usually whilst making his lunch so he’s very excited to be on it!
