James Cridland: A Trip Through Podland
The Sound Off Podcast
12/01/21 • 41 min
We loved having James Crildland on our show back in 2018 when we fussed about podcast discovery when there were a half million podcasts in the universe. There are now 2.5 million and we have so many more questions to ask.
In this episode, I get a little help from my Podcast SuperFriends Jag in Detroit and Catherine O’Brien who are heavy consumers of James’ Podnews and Podland, the latter now into its second year. we discuss Apple v. Spotify, what Indie podcasters are still missing out on, and how North America radio is faring overall. We also get into the weeds on some ad tech stuff that should fascinate you, even if terms like “dynamic ad insertion” and AI make your eyes glaze over.
You get a lot of junk email everyday, but this will not be one of them Subscribe to Podnews and get the latest on everything happening in the world of podcast. There's also a companion podcast available everywhere... I listen to it daily in a flash briefing via an Alexa Skill.
We also discussed the first year of Podland, which is co-hosted by James and Sam Sethi.
My thanks also to Jon Gay From Jag in Detroit Podcasts and Catherine O'Brien From Branch Out Programs for lending some questions to the episode.

Terry O'Reilly: Under The Influence
The Sound Off Podcast
06/30/19 • 38 min
Terry O'Reilly is a radio guy. He will tell you on the show that he is an ad guy - and that might be partially true. However, it is apparent that when you listen to his take on the world of media, advertising, marketing and radio, that he is grounded in radio. His show, Under the Influence, which grew from its previous incarnation of The Age of Persuasion (2006-2011) and O'Reilly on Advertising (2005). The show is now in its eighth season on CBC Radio and has expanded further into the podcast world.
Terry and his wife Debbie, along with daughters Callie, Shea and Sidney work on the program year round to create some of the most amazing audio about marketing. The show has developed a loyal following from countless Canadians and listeners around the world. Here are some things in the show we learned:
- The show's idea came about over beers one day which involved Larry McInnis who was the creative director at CHUM in Toronto. As a complete aside, Larry is a graduate of Acadia University which is where I went to school. :)
- There is a Beatles reference in every show. That information lives on the Wikipedia page but Terry confirmed that he is a big fan and in his most recent episode spoke about how John Lennon was the best marketer amongst the Beatles.
- Terry is starting a company for podcasters... details will be announced soon but we were stoked that he announced that on our podcast.
- As we mentioned at the outset, Terry is a radio guy. When I asked him to come on the podcast he was aware of the show and had taken in a few episodes. High praise!
- Podcast aficionados will love hearing how Terry has embraced podcasting.
The entire back catalogue of Under The Influence is now available in Podcast form. Connect to it here.
Terry has three books and is working on a 4th this summer. Connect to all things Terry here.

Rob Greenlee: The Shift from Podcaster to Content Creator
The Sound Off Podcast
12/17/24 • 44 min
Podcast Pioneer Rob Greenlee is a podcast Hall of Famer (Class 2017), host of the New Media Show (along with Todd Cochrane), Podcast Tips, Trust Factor, Spoken Life Show and Behind the EV Wheel. That's a lot of shows. Over the course of his career Rob has worked on the Zune Marketplace, where he helped develop and grow podcasting on the Zune platform. The first time I met him, he was at Spreaker and Voxnest where served as VP of Content and Partnerships, contributing to the development of tools and services for podcasters. (Spreaker was all about going Live back in the day) He also had a stint at PodcastOne as a VP, focusing on podcast content and monetization.
Rob continues to be an advocate for podcasters, frequently speaking at industry events, hosting panels, and educating others on podcasting trends, best practices, and technology.
As mentioned above, he co-hosts this popular podcast with Todd Cochrane. He was kind enough to ask me to guest-host the program while Todd was on assignment.
Rob Greenlee’s long-standing presence and contributions have made him a respected voice in the podcasting community, particularly for his focus on innovation and advocacy.

Abe Hefter: How To News and Sports
The Sound Off Podcast
06/30/20 • 52 min
Abe Hefter and I finally crossed paths in 2002. I recall hearing him on CJFM (FM96) in the 80's, and in 2002 we convened on Fort Street at that station when CHOM, Mix96 and CJAD merged itself into one entity. Abe began to transition into academia in 2003 when he received an opportunity to teach part time at Concordia University. There's something about teaching that brings out the energy in Abe. Very simply, you can hear it in the episode when we talk about inspiring the next generation of broadcasters.
In this episode, Abe and I track his career in short order which included stops at notable radio stations like CFNY, CKEY, CKNW, CJFM, and CJAD. He also told us what it was like to be call Montreal Canadiens hockey games. Abe has always done a little of everything, and today that includes hosting a blues show on WWUH 91.3, on campus at the University of Hartford. We also discussed in depth about social media and the impact it is having on news, and whether a platform should be censoring its users. Abe said Twitter was his "go-to" so give him a follow.
We also referenced other episodes which featured former personalities and creators now teaching.
This includes:
Dave Bannerman, Nova Scotia Community College
Donna Halper, Lesley University
Carlos Benevides, Conestoga College

Sue Tyler: Humour, Sexuality, Equality
The Sound Off Podcast
12/02/20 • 58 min
Sue Tyler is the afternoon host on Power 104 in Kelowna, British Columbia. Recently I saw her streaming on Twitch and was reminded that I really I need to hear the whole story. Sue has been on the radio for over thirty years. Like many of us who embark on the radio journey, we have our goals set on a destination or an end place. Sue Tyler is the afternoon drive host at power 104 in Kelowna, British Columbia. how she got there is culmination of life decisions, survival, wherewithal, and circumstances combined with the talent of understanding and connecting with people. Sue now has a Twitch channel which you can find here.
In this episode, you'll hear about Sue's start in Ottawa and her passages through Peterborough, Toronto, and eventually Kelowna. Sue is also very good on the phones and shares some of the secret sauce in getting people to call in. She has also reached out to consultants like Lee Abrams and John Parikhal as she looks to connecting to listeners in the future.

Uncle Darrin Harvey: Getting Really Involved
The Sound Off Podcast
11/22/19 • 34 min
Darrin Harvey and I met in late 1989 when he was going to fill in on some Christmas shifts on Magic 97 in Kentville, Nova Scotia. From the get go, I knew we would be friends. And while we never lived in the same time zone after I left in 1992, I never lost touch with Darrin. He ascended to mornings, was later fired in the early 2000's, only to return the when region got a new FM in 89.3 K-Rock. Once again, he ascended to mornings and he is the quintessential morning man for the region. Darrin has the playbook for connecting with listeners and yes it involves being involved. In this day and age when the practices are "Move all the small stuff to Facebook and promote it there so we can get another record in", Darrin not only puts it to air but then hosts the event outright.
Sometimes the best marketing is just getting really involved.
What is success in radio? After speaking to Darrin in this episode, I realized that it's about the number of people you touch, and the number of smiles you leave behind.
Darrin made mention of my blog post from a few years ago called "The History of the Death of Radio" which you can feel free to read.

Lili Wexu: Hear That Voice Again
The Sound Off Podcast
09/18/20 • 46 min
Lili Wexu is a voice actress based in Los Angeles but started in Montreal. You might say this is all Howard Stern's fault. Back in the late 90's Howard Stern was syndicated to Q107 in Toronto and CHOM in Montreal. The result for the former was a failed venture, the latter was a near disaster. CHOM's longtime competitor at the time was Mix 96, who courted disenfranchised francophones to their station but using Lili as imaging talent. Rob Braide was general manager at Mix 96 and had been apart of a bilingual era at CHOM in the 70's where French and English co-existed in harmony on one frequency. Lili grew her business with the help of afternoon Drive personality and voiceover talent Rob Wreford who mentored her.
In this episode, we hear about Lili's evolution through the voice industry and discuss how it has changed throughout the years. She also provides us with some incredible tips and tricks to steer through the tricky world of voiceover in 2020. As promised, here are the links to access her e-book series.
If you would like to book Lili to be the voice of your brand, you can go to her website which has demos and so much more.

The Big Story's First Year
The Sound Off Podcast
06/25/19 • 25 min
It sounds easy. Produce a compelling 15 to 20 minute piece of audio every day about a Canadian news story. And then you find out it isn't easy. For the last year, Jordan Heath-Rawlings has been doing just that with Frequency Network's flagship podcast, The Big Story. Mildly modelled after the NY Times' podcast, The Daily, the Big Story has shone the spotlight on Canadian stories ranging from the rat and transit problems in Toronto, to Canada's legalization of pot, and the inane plebiscite on keeping Winnipeg's Portage and Main. (Full Disclosure - I was the guest on that episode which you can listen to here)
In this episode, you'll find out how the show came together, what decisions get made, and the forward planning that goes into each episode.
Special thanks to Claire Brassard at the Frequency Network for providing audio for this episode.
