This sneaky little thing has been messing with people's lives! It could be present in your life and not even know it!
Dissociation makes you feel like you aren't connected to yourself or others. It can happen in moments or be a frequent experience. What happens when a person 'dissociates'? They may feel separate or apart from their body, their thoughts and feelings, like their surroundings or other people are far away.
This happens as a way to survive experience that are hard, traumatic. I reference the ACEs Study today, which has a test. It helps you see 'how much' trauma is in your history through 10 questions, basically asking if certain things have happened in your life before your 18th birthday. What should one do if they dissociate?
Knowing what it feels like to be grounded is a great starting point, as dissociation is basically the opposite. Practicing all sorts of grounding techniques when you are not dissociated helps your body and mind know what it feels like. It is a reference point for the direction to head in when you're dissociating.
There is also a method known as the 5 4 3 2 1 method.
5 things you see
4 thing you can touch
3 things you hear
2 things you smell
1 thing you taste
this helps bring you back into your body and the present moment
Focusing on your breath helps (this is probably only going to work at the very beginning of the dissociation or with milder situations)
