My Favorite Books in Business Part 1

08/17/23 • 16 min

One of the tools I used to help build my business was reading books. Books changed how I did business and I implemented so many of the lessons I learned from them. So today, I’m going to share with you a few of my favorites to help you grow your business as well!

The books I will be sharing with you today are books that affected my overarching idea of how business worked for me and changed how I did things. These are books that defined my work structure to make it what it is now. They’ll help you improve your business skills and have a clear business plan.

Books I cover:

2:13 - These three books really help you get clear on what your business looks like, where you’re going and what your goals are. These books are: The One Thing by Gary Keller, The 12 Week Year by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington, and The Vivid Vision by Cameron Herold.

5:35 - If you want to know how to build a business or what the thing to do next is, then there are two books for you to read: Making Money is Killing Your Business by Chuck Blakeman, and Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell.

9:29 - If you are in early business or you feel like your skills are rusty, you should read Business Made Simple by Donald Miller.

11:01 - The two most important parts of business are how to bring in the money and how to keep the money. The one book that changed how I did this is Copywriting Secrets by Jim Edwards.

These 7 books are great reads and will improve how you do business. They will help you get clear on what your business is, what your next steps should be, and how to understand your target client. Happy reading!

The Small Business School Podcast - The Business Growth Black Hole: A Call for Better Government Support
play

09/10/24 • 16 min

In today's episode on Small Business School we're diving into a hot topic that might ruffle some feathers but needs to be discussed. There are massive gaps in the support for growing businesses! While there's plenty of government support and advice for startups, there's a concerning lack of guidance as businesses progress beyond the initial stages. Let’s talk about what’s missing and how I want us to bridge the gap!
Topics Covered:

  • While well-intentioned, many government initiatives for businesses focus on startups but leave growing businesses struggling for guidance and support.
  • Lack of financial literacy is a major reason businesses fail, yet there's still little emphasis on teaching business owners how to manage their finances effectively.
  • Why mentorship from experienced business owners who have navigated various challenges is crucial for scaling businesses.
  • The misconception that more funding is the answer, but without the right financial education and strategic planning, businesses are unlikely to succeed even with additional funds.
  • A call for better business support with more robust education and strategic funding initiatives tailored for growth stages.

I feel like we are always prompting the start of businesses, and not the growth of healthy businesses. We need a shift in how we support small businesses, focusing on sustainability rather than just getting started!
What do you think? Reach out to me, I’d love to know what your experience with government support has been like!

Armed with a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami and years of experience in trademark law, Lauren blends legal expertise with a storyteller's flair. A former award-winning children's book reviewer and virtual book club founder, she brings her narrative prowess to trademark creation and protection, helping clients craft distinctive marks that vividly communicate their business's unique story to consumers.
Through our conversation Lauren is sharing the nuances of trademarks, why they’re critical for business success, and how to avoid costly mistakes. Whether you’re building your brand or planning to expand globally, Lauren’s insights will give you the tools to safeguard your business!

  • The importance of conducting a comprehensive clearance search before choosing a business name.
  • Strategies for choosing a name and deciding when to trademark it.

The Small Business School Podcast - What You Need to Hire Your First Staff: Contracts, Policies, and Beyond!
play

08/27/24 • 12 min

Hey Small Business School! Today, we’re tackling a question that I got on Instagram, someone is hiring their first non-family staff member and they want to know what they need in place. Whether you're in Canada or elsewhere, setting up the right framework from the start is crucial. Let’s dive into what you need to make this transition smooth and successful!
Topics Covered:

  • Start with a solid contract and offer letter. This should include details on hours, compensation, bonuses, and any provided equipment. Consulting with an HR or labor law expert can save you from costly mistakes.
  • Know the Labor Laws. Each province or region has its own labor laws covering holidays, overtime, and other key aspects. Understanding these laws and including them in your contract is essential to avoid legal pitfalls.
  • Outline specific rules about work hours, dress code, and use of company e quipment. Providing clear guidelines helps prevent misunderstandings and maintains a positive working relationship.
  • Start with more structure and gradually offer flexibility as trust is built.
  • Regular check-ins and performance reviews are key. Make sure there are no surprises—employees should be aware of how they’re doing and what’s expected.

Starting with a strong foundation from the beginning of the onboarding process will set you and your new team member up for success!
Reach out to me on Instagram if you have questions! Good luck, and here’s to your growing team!

The Small Business School Podcast - Episode 300: Real Talk on Growth, Grit, and Showing Up Authentically
play

05/13/25 • 21 min

We made it to 300 episodes! In this milestone solo episode, I’m reflecting on the unexpected journey of starting a podcast (shoutout to Kristina Bartold from The Social Snippet!), and all the little lessons that have shaped me along the way. From CEO mindset shifts to the value of real human connection, I’m sharing a mash-up of the thoughts I’ve been posting on social lately—because the response to those has been incredible. Whether you're a parent juggling it all, a business owner trying to stay present, or someone just needing a pep talk—you’ll feel seen in this one.

Key topics covered:

  • Why podcasting isn’t just about downloads—it’s about building relationships and finding your voice
  • The importance of stepping out of your physical space to get a 50,000-foot view of your business
  • Traveling for business as a parent—why it’s never a perfect balance, and that’s okay
  • How real community (like High Vibe Women) fuels you in business and life
  • The power of tiny moments of connection—with your clients, your team, your family
  • Why you should smile at strangers, trust your gut more than tactics, and just keep going

Thanks for being here for 300 episodes. I’m so grateful. 💛
